strina: text only "no one has ever done this before probably because they would be killed to death" (txt - killed to death)
JOURNEYVERSE, HOW SO TERRIBLY ADDICTIVE. IT IS SO VERY BOYS' ADVENTURE, I CANNOT STAND IT. MANY OF THE CROSSOVER TEXTS CAN ACTUALFAX BE FOUND IN THE MEN'S ADVENTURE SECTION OF BOOKSTORES, EVEN. GUNS GUNS GUNS BABES BABES BABES SAVE THE WORLD KICK ASS BUILD STUFF FORM ARMY = IT IS A WINNING FORMULA. I CANNOT LIE: I ALWAYS WANT MORE "BUILD STUFF" IN FIC, IT IS KIND OF MY FAVE. THE ARMORERS GET THEIR OWN SIDE-SERIES, THAT'S HOW MUCH "BUILD STUFF" THIS THING HAS. A+++.

WACKY CROSSOVERS ARE WACKY! WALKER TEXAS RANGER + THE PRETENDER + PREDATOR + JACK OF ALL TRADES + HACKERS + KNIGHT RIDER + ASKEWNIVERSE + HERCULES + THE CROW + LA FEMME NIKITA + BOONDOCK SAINTS + THE SHADOW? WHO DOES THAT SHIT. THESE GUYS. (WALKER TEXAS RANGER = BEST SURPRISE CROSSOVER EVER; THE FIC EQUIVALENT OF PULLING THE WALKER LEVER. AWESOME.)

I KIND OF LOVE THE FIGHT SCENES. THIS SERIES IS AWESOME AT "RIGHTEOUS ASS-WHOOPING", BUT ALSO AWESOME AT "MISTAKEN IDENTITY", AKA, XANDER KEEPS ACCIDENTALLY GETTING IN FIGHTS WITH THE GOOD GUYS.

BUT THERE IS ALSO SOME UNCONSCIOUSLY WEIRD GENDER STUFF - AKA, THE AUTHORS LOVE STRONG WOMEN AND THERE ARE LOTS OF THEM, BUT THERE'S ALSO THE WEIRD STEREOTYPED STUFF THAT YOU GET WHEN A BUNCH OF MACHO GUYS ARE TRYING TO COLLABORATIVELY WRITE STRONG WOMEN. ALSO, THE FAITH/DANA THING WEIRDS ME; THE FAITH PERSONA IS ARMOR FOR SQUISHY INNER DANA! YET ALSO THE PERSONA IS THE REAL GIRL, JUST GROWN UP! YET ALSO, FAITH WILL KICK ASS WHERE DANA CRIES ON YOUR SHOULDER AND JUST NEEDS HUGS, WHAT (HINT: CHRISTMAS, PRESENTS AND PLEAS = NOT MY FAVE. ALSO, IT MAKES HARRY TASKER LOOK LIKE A GIANT DOUCHENOZZLE. THUMBS DOWN.) ALSO, I SKIM THE AERIAL BATTLES BECAUSE I CAN'T VISUALISE THAT KIND OF FIGHT. ALSO, THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE THAT MAY BE ORIGINAL CHARACTERS OR MAY BE OBSCURE FANDOMS, I CANNOT TELL. I HONESTLY THOUGHT HE MADE UP ANDRZEJ KONZAKI, FOR ONE. BUT NO, SECRETLY HE IS ONE OF THE LIKE TWENTY CHARACTERS FROM THE STONY MAN SERIES, WHICH, IDK, SEE ABOVE RE: MEN'S ADVENTURE BOOKS. ALSO, XANDER GETS ALL THE GIRLS, TELLS ARCHANGELS TO SUCK HIS DICK, AND IS, IN ALL WAYS, INFINITELY MORE BADASS THAN YOU (I MOCK, BUT SECRETLY I KIND OF LOVE THAT PART, TOO. AND ACTUALLY HE JUST GETS, LIKE, FOUR AND A HALF GIRLS - HE IS GOING TO END UP WITH BUFFY, BUT WE ARE NOT THERE YET, HENCE, HALF.)

I TOTALLY CANNOT FIND THE THING I READ WHERE TEN ADMITTED THE REWIND WAS TOTALLY FOR SHITS AND GIGGLES, BUT I AM CONVINCED IT WAS REAL. I COULD NOT MAKE THAT UP. IN THE MIDDLE OF AN EPIC MULTIAUTHOR SERIES, ONE OF HIS BOYS WAS LIKE, HEY DUDE, I'D LIKE TO KILL EVERYONE AND THEN THEY CAN USE TIME TRAVEL TO UNDO IT; JUST LET ME PULL A JOSS FIRST, FOR SERIOUS, IT IS MY HEART'S DESIRE TO END THE WORLD. AND TEN WAS LIKE, HEY DUDE, WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY...WAIT. BRILLIANCE IS FORTHCOMING: DO THAT, AND THEN FUCK UP THE TIME TRAVEL. FUCK SEVEN DAYS, LET'S GO FOUR MOTHERFUCKING YEARS. JUST FOR THE FUN TIMES WE CAN HAVE FUCKING WITH THEM. OH, BTW? THE BAD GUYS TOTALLY HAVE TEMPORALLY SHIELDED EQUIP, SO THEY WILL BE ARRIVING AHEAD OF SCHEDULE, WHEN NO ONE IS PREPARED/GOING TO LISTEN TO THE CRAZY 16-YO WHO SAYS HE KNOW THE FUTURE. UNTIL HE WHIPS OUT HIS OWN AIR FORCE. HEEEELLL TO THE YEAH.

THIS IS SUCH GUY-FIC, IT IS HILARIOUS.

Conjugate, one of those Steve/Tony big bangs I was talking about, so, y'know, Steve/Tony, Marvel-verse. Steve, Tony, Peter Parker, Luke Cage, Jessica Drew, and Logan accidentally get their powers swapped and it's awesome, because they totally have to keep superheroing while they're swapped. There's action and humor and angst and love, what else could you ask for? Have some quotes:

"I can't help feeling we should be keeping the Spider-Cap quieter."

"He's enjoying it so much, though. And I bet this guy's face will be a picture. Patriotic death from above!"

and

"I keep telling Steve he doesn't need to know every police officer in the city by name, but he won't listen."

"Aren't there forty thousand of them?"

"Well, he's got a good memory." Tony sighed. "I miss Extremis. I really did know all of them by name. And their birthdays and shoe size, too."

"You do know that's creepy, right?"

"You're part spider, how is that not creepy?"

Because just like the movies, Die Hard fandom is ridiculous. Just. Go read this: Heroes Never Die (Except When They Do), my new favorite deathfic. John McClane dies the world's oldest badass.

strina: comic panel caption "sweet! let's go, buddy! time to get our nerd on!" (comics - nerd on)
'Cause, okay, I love shippy stuff, and I like clever plots, but it's all in the DETAILS, man! Like, weird classes you're required to take at Starfleet Academy, a Buffyverse species of demon that can only be killed by a certain frequency of sound, babyproofing a Potterverse house when the baby can do magic, etc. Explore the quirks of your canon universe! So, have some awesome worldbuilding fics:

The Recreation of the Warrior - Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, Harper/Tyr, Tyr/others, Dylan/Beka, Dylan/others, Beka/others. Amazing exploration of Nietzschian culture and philosophy. "My people learn as small children that religion is the opiate of the masses. In practice, however, we spend far more time acknowledging our debt to our ancestors than might be expected of any Confucian monk. Since no actual deities are involved, this does not count as 'religious observance,' but merely as practical genetics." Gah, just. Tyr's voice is so strong and so consistent that it totally negates my antipathy toward first person POV in fic.

Cradle Elbows Wide - Firefly, gen. This is Sergeant Mal, guys, and it's so well-written that it's totally canon to me. All the different cultures that sent soldiers for this one cause, and we know the whole time that the cause is totally doomed; it kills me, but in the best of ways.

Reconstruction and the companion piece, Restoration - Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Xander/Spike, Willow/Tara. A post-Gift AU that does a fantastic job showing the struggle to guard the Hellmouth without your heavy-hitter. The CotH is the BEST, god; it makes so much sense and it's so very, very awesome. But there's also the protective stalking of Dawn, the Omega Plan (GENIUS), just a million little touches that bring the 'verse to life.

Father Goose Tales - Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Law and Order: SVU/Alias/Las Vegas/Gilmore Girls/Stargate SG-1, Xander/Faith, canon pairings. Guys, there's infrastructure and standard operating procedures! There's a supernatural troubles hotline! It's very much a world where the Council has a presence, complete with unintended consequences, and where the Council is an organization of professionals who have been there and done that. "Hello, you’ve reached the North American Headquarters of the Watcher’s Council, if this is an emergency please scream or press one ….. if this is not an emergency, please leave a message and a method of contact and we will get back to you. If you would like to be contacted by one of the regional offices, be sure to make that request and include your location in the message. Thank you and be safe. ….. beeep."

The Sacrifices Arc - Harry Potter, Harry/Draco, Snape/Regulus, Hermione/Zacharias, Connor/Parvati, a bunch of OC relationships that are amazing and run through het, slash, and femslash. Oh, y'all knew I was going to throw this one in there. So! This 'verse explains why there were no international efforts to stop Voldemort, gives us interesting and well-drawn systems of magic that include the awesomeness of something called "puellaris witches" - women who, through circumscribing their behavior in public and submitting to their husbands, gain the ability to turn into fucking lionesses when their children are threatened, aaaand shows us once again that humans rule the world because they are assholes. Um. I also don't feel comfortable sending people off to read this without mentioning that this shit is HARDCORE. Like, I read something that had a bunch of dire warnings for what ending up being an apocalypse, some violence, and some implied sex slavery (all of which got reversed and wiped from the characters' memories, so, weeeeeak). This is not like that. There is torture of main characters, including loss of limb. There is death, lots of it, major and minor characters, including a baby (in a fairly horrific way). There is rape, not of major characters, but there's an unrepentant (female) rapist who's one of the "good guys" and somebody gets raped to death, so. There is child abuse, physical, emotional and magical. I'm forgetting some stuff. Okay, cannibalism! There is cannibalism, by bad guys and also by a good guy under mindcontrol. ...Read it anyway! It is totally my favoritest story in all the worlds.

strina: text only "that's absurd i love it" (txt - absurd)
The incestuous courtship of the antichrist's bride, Sam/Dean, Supernatural.

Bad enough Sam has to save the world by taking over Hell. Then he accidentally signs Dean up to be his Sacred Whore - Beloved Consort, sorry, we're going with "Beloved Consort" as the less fratricide-inducing option.

Guys, this made me laugh so much. Team Boy-King has humans on it, but mostly we see the angels and the demons and they're pretty hilariously inhuman.

"I see your-" Gaviel leans in to inspect the bone Raum has put forward –"human fibula, and raise you two discarded beer bottles."

Despite the demons, and Dean, cheating in a breathtakingly brazen manner, and despite not seeming to be entirely aware of the rules, Gaviel has somehow contrived to win the last two hands.

When it comes to his turn, Dean flicks through his cards, rearranges their order thoughtfully. His poker face, Sam has always thought, makes him look like he's trying to tie a knot in a cherry stem with his tongue: intent but also obscene in some vague way.

"Okay," he says, "I'm gonna wager…" He surveys his winnings so far, which resemble nothing so much as a small heap of trash. He wrinkles his nose and then smirks in an ominous fashion. "I'm gonna wager
my immortal soul."

The demons give a collective groan and throw their cards down in disgust.

"What?" Dean demands, all wide-eyed innocence.

"Yeah, we're not falling for that one again," says Lamia. "Because, we try and collect? And your brother kicks us back down into the Big Heat, and you know it."

"You're just sore 'cause I got the hand with five aces," Dean says.

"Oh, bite me, bitch," she throws back.

"How many aces are usually in a deck?" Gaviel queries, studying the text on the box the cards came out of.

"You'd be surprised," Raum says. "Why, I once played in a game with twenty-eight." He smiles at the memory. "That was played for a soul as well." His smile grows teeth. "Should'a seen the look on that guy's face, as I pulled ace after ace."

Also, I can't stop repeating Unworthy whore! I will strip the skin from your whore-bones!. I don't know why, but it is amazingly fun to use out of context.

But! There is actually an incestuous crisis! They are initially creeped out by the idea of sleeping with each other; worth noting in this fandom. Obviously, that's overcome and there's hot sex (complete with porno dialogue that is sexy and giggle-inducing at the same time - YMMV).

Basically: A+++.

strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (Default)
I did this a couple years ago and have been toying with updating it for a while. I don't know, it seems worth it to have a kind of caveat lector right up front.

  • I have never yet managed to say "not my fandom" and make it stick. I don't even have to be pimped to; I just have to see someone get really enthusiastic and I'll want a piece of that.

  • I suck at warnings. And I tend not to warn for kink, because it doesn't really register as something out of the ordinary unless it's something massive like the Romanology series or something that bothers me, like bestiality.

  • When it comes to my kinks, I'm anybody's. Seriously. I try to maintain enough sanity not to rec anything I like just because it hits me like that, but I am biased like I cannot tell you.

Basically? If you see me rec something that includes enemas/watersports/hardcore bodymod/incest resulting in children, it is a really good story, because those things squick me pretty seriously. But pegging/gangbangs/most permutations of BDSM/hardcore h/c? They hit me where I live.

  • I always want a happy ending, unless I don't. By which I mean: I want love to overcome, to save the day, for the hero/heroine to ride off into the sunset with their love or loves of choice and live reasonably happily ever after. Failing that, I want everyone dead. I do not tend to go for the middle ground.

It's happiness and love forever and aye, or never happiness again, ever, OMG, because the world is ending and the Hellmouth's opening and the Wraith are coming and Terminal City's being carpet bombed for the safety of America, etcetera, etcetera.

  • I am a size-queen. I want stories long enough to sink into for hours. For me? 25,000 words is medium length.

  • I am a child of sci-fi and romance novels. I - Look, deii ex machina, spontaneous telepathy, secret relatives, these are pretty much par for my course. I delight in cliches and revel in crack; I will accept just about any contortion a story goes through to give me a happy ending. I don't flinch from a ludicrous premise; I flinch only from a ludicrous premise badly carried out.

  • Crossovers are my joy. I believe I've mentioned the "fandom I love + fandom I love = exponential love" thing?

  • I am always up for a threesome story. Always. Love is good; more love is better. Plus, I get to enjoy at least two ships at once!

  • I generally find cross-generational pairings squicky on an instinctive level, but I apparently make exceptions for HP and BtVS. I just. You do not take advantage of positions of authority. I cannot stand Snape/Dumbledore for the same reasons; when someone holds your actual future in their hands, refusing something they want is complicated at best and fatal at worst. There's not a true freedom of consent. It's not age, it's that it usually involves an automatic power imbalance.

  • I don't do parent/child incest. Sibling incest, yes, because I embrace my inevitable descent into the special hell, but notnotNOT parent/child. See above re: power imbalance and consent.

  • The pairings thing can be a little hit or miss. I don't usually mention OCs. That is, if there's a story with Jack/Ianto and Jack/OMC (or OFC, Jack keeps his options open), it just gets filed under Jack/Ianto. And I may not mention canon or so-fanon-they're-like-canon relationships (Mikey/Alicia and Pete/Ashlee or Mikey/Pete and Bert/Gerard).

  • I am always happy to clarify a warning. Or, hell, to expand on anything. If you see me mention a fic and I don't link to it, ask me and I will.

  • I am hopelessly attracted to steadfast suffering in the name of unrequited love. No, really, it's like a sickness. God, don't mention pining to me, I'm helpless against it.

    I blame literature, utterly. UTTERLY.

  • I have a casual relationship with all but a handful of canons. Harry Potter? I will jump all over someone for misusing canon facts; there are stories I can't read because the authors are apparently confused by the Unforgivables. Most other fandoms, I just let the crazy slide.

But characterization? Whatever. It is all hypothesis, to me. There are...boundaries, I suppose, to my definition of a particular character, but even when you exceed them, I don't necessarily think you're wrong; I just think it's outside my interest. Woobie to sociopath, as long as you're consistent, you can make it real for me. So I'll rec fics that bash certain characters and fics that love those same characters.

  • I have favorites. You will be able to tell. Look at the fandom - see that character that is half of almost every pairing? That is my favorite. Off the top of my head, I've only got three fandoms (of about 200) where I have multiple favorites and even then, I have a favoritest favorite and a close-second. It's worth noting because if your favorite character is Gwen Cooper or Robin Wood or Inara Serra, my recs might not be for you, so much.

(FYI: Those three fandoms? BtVS - Xander, then Wesley. HP - Harry, then Remus. Bandom - Brendon, then a tie of Patrick and Gerard.)

  • Seriously, on that h/c thing. There is probably not a kind of hurt I haven't read (although there are some I will never read again *ANAL PEAR, AAAAH*) and I have recced most of them. Probably a dozen kinds of apocalypse; rape and gangrape and torture and castration and molestation and abuse and plain old crippling injury or phobia. Read the warning list.

  • I take requests. Reccing helps me track the stories I like and that's awesome, but that's not why I started. There are all these brilliant, AMAZING stories out there and the Internet is infinite; I want to help people find things they'll love, the stories that linger in your head, with phrases that you still remember, five years later. That's the point of fandom, for me.

Okay, so it's a few more than 50. And there are would have been a couple more if they hadn't been removed from the Internet. But these are the best/my favorite of the bunch.

(Also, I would love this song just for the lines Tell your boyfriend if he says he's got beef/I'm a vegetarian and I'm not fucking scared of him.)

Okay, it's a little long. Herein lie crossovers, BtVS/Angel, Harry Potter, Supernatural, Smallville, Due South, popslash, Torchwood, Lord of the Rings, RPF, and Care Bears. )

I'm selling two rec sets - rec sets like this, not like [livejournal.com profile] list50 - containing at least 10 fics of a certain fandom, pairing, or theme. I lowballed a little on my offered fandoms and themes. I'll try really hard to meet any requests; I just didn't want to offer something I wasn't absolutely sure I could do.

Come on, haven't you always wanted a minion?

Guys, I read a lot of fic, in a lot of different places, but Twisting the Hellmouth, a Buffy crossover archive (though it also accepts noncrossover stories in Buffy and other fandoms from its crossover authors), is totally my favorite archive. It's just neat.

It's got all the things I like in other archives - Top Tens, readable formatting, clear categories, slash/het/femslash clearly marked, the ability to view a story by chapter or as a whole - plus some. The tracking options not only give you email alerts when a story is updated, you can also choose to track just that story or every story by that author, and you can mark stories as read so you don't keep getting sucked in by the same vague and unremarkable yet sort of interesting summary. The limit on favorites lists means the Top Tens are really accurate. The categories narrow down to the point of ridiculousness! You can single out Anita Blake fanfiction, then Xander-centered, then the specific Xander-pairing of your choice. SO MUCH EASIER to avoid creepy and uninteresting pairings!

To sum up: FAVORITEST. And they just published the results of their annual awards, so it's a great time to try it! I would recommend changing the default rating filter unless you really do want it to hide all FR21 stories automatically.

Why is there no May/Walsh fic? Seriously, there hasn't been any posted on [livejournal.com profile] olympic_slash since '04. That is ridiculous! Kerri is adorable and supergay for Misty.

Also, I am eight short on my RPF list, with a possible eleven open if I find a bunch of somethings awesome. I want to just post and be done! Although I'm glad I didn't finish before today, because there's an awesome Phelps/Thorpe fic that makes me giggle madly.

I found another Phelps/Thorpe fic and I am wary, yet intrigued. Phelps is a water mage. It could be awesome.

And then I found something that I love utterly, but I don't think I can rec it because it has no pairing or real title, but it's so very, very awesome. [livejournal.com profile] thorne_scratch is writing a Scaly Dick WiP wherein Michael Phelps is growing scales. On his dick. So he calls Ian Crocker. Who brings Aaron Piersol and Ryan Lochte to help him in his Time of Need. It pretty much wins at life.

Y'all, I don't hate bugs. I am terrified of cockroaches, but I had a sincere attachment to the cotton spider that lived in my window when I was wee. I will do stuff like round the crickets up and carry them outside. Yeah, no, that's ending now. Because I don't know what the fuck happened, but there are crickets everywhere. Big crickets, normal crickets, tiny baby crickets that crawl into the walls. Somehow they appear to have escaped natural predation. It's my duty to even out the population explosion.

But that is not the point of this post (crickets! in the walls! what the hell is that). Laura claims to be incapable of finding her own fic, which, whatever, hooker, you were fannish before we ever met!

Still. Now that I have tried it, Dexter isn't a bad show. It's just, y'know, a tiny fandom that seems to be mostly badfic. So far! I should give it more than a day to wow me.

Here's the stuff I did like:

Tiny Monsters (gen) [Dexter] - Did he think about this before it happened, imagine the pure and absolute silence of a dead world? The disease that killed most of them, all of them, was too perfect, enough to make Dexter believe in a benevolent God, a God made not in man's image, but in Dexter's.

Heroics (Dexter/Rita) [Dexter] - There's only so many things a girl can do when her perfect boyfriend turns out to be a serial killer.

Use Your Illusion, Too (gen) [Dexter] - After everything with Rudy ends in far worse of a clusterfuck than all of her other relationships combined, Deb takes up knitting.

It’s only for a month but she needs something to do with her hands. At work they’re steady as stone by sheer force of will, but at home they tremble like crazy. She takes to eating sandwiches a lot because they can’t shake off a fork.

Freedom and Anarchy (Dexter/Brian pre-slash) [Dexter] - But as soon as the initial worry over Dexter’s welfare subsided, the resentment came back, bubbling up like hot tar inside him. Don’t make me choose. They had no claim to him, none, they weren’t his family, they were fake, Harry lied to Dexter and Dexter lied to Deb. Why should they mean anything to Dexter, let alone as much as Brian?

But.

It had taken the both of them to equal the one of him.
Sequel seemingly in the works.

Meeting of the Minds (gen) [Dexter/CSI] - Gil realised, quite suddenly, that he was in the presence of a monster.

Life and Death in the Cereal Aisle (gen) [Dexter/Supernatural] - Eyes clicked into place as Dexter glanced up momentarily, fully intending to turn back to the Musilux and All Bran. Everything stops for a second and Dexter has the distinct impression that the kid's looking right into him and seeing just what isn't there.

Darkly Dreaming (gen) [Dexter/Hannibal] - Hannibal has never believed in a destiny beyond his control. He doesn’t put much stock in luck, or fate, or coincidence as the great literati would have him believe. But to stumble across such a treasure in Miami, of all places, almost makes it seem possible. Sequel planned.

Also, I'm kind of in love with Gossip Girl and specifically, Serena/Blair. My favorite so far is [livejournal.com profile] fembuck's series, Audrey Can Wait, Here We Go, and Tango in D Minor (the last is a WiP). How do you not love a story with quotes like this )?

(I've had this floating around for a few weeks and thought I'd throw it out there.)

I have never yet managed to say "not my fandom" and make it stick.

I get twitchily defensive of the English language, for it is my love and my life.

I suck at warnings. And I tend not to warn for kink, because it doesn't really register as something out of the ordinary unless it's something massive like the Romanology series or something that bothers me, like bestiality.

When it comes to my kinks, I'm anybody's. Seriously. I continue to read The Lure because they gave me Van in a collar. I try to maintain enough sanity not to rec anything I like just because it hits me like that, but I'm biased like I cannot tell you (although I swear I will never rec anything as bad as The Lure. Because seriously. It is to cry.)

I always want a happy ending, unless I don't. By which I mean: I want love to overcome, to save the day, for the hero/heroine to ride off into the sunset with their love or loves of choice and live reasonably happily ever after. I am a size-queen. I want stories long enough to sink into for hours. 's all about the epics, baby. I'll dabble some, in the shorter stories, but I cannot resist the longer ones.

I am a child of sci-fi and romance novels. I - Look, deii ex machina, spontaneous telepathy, secret relatives, these are pretty much par for my course. I delight in cliches and revel in crack; I will accept just about any contortion a story goes through to give me a happy ending. I am always up for a threesome story. Always.

I generally find cross-generational pairings squicky on an instinctive level, but will occasionally make exceptions, such as for Hermione/Snape or Matilda/Miss Honey. I do not make exceptions for Harry/Sirius or Batman/any of the Robins.

I don't do parent/child incest. Sibling incest, yes, because I embrace my inevitable descent into the special hell, but notnotNOT parent/child.

I am always happy to clarify a warning.

Also, I am hopelessly attracted to steadfast suffering in the name of unrequited love. No, really, it's like a sickness. God, don't mention pining to me, I'm helpless against it.

You think you're out and then no, no, you're really emphatically not. You are, in fact, so not out that you spend 10 hours quality time with a newfound rec set.

And jesus christ, these stories. Fucking...I want warnings in my recs! Not for content, blah blah incest/kink/OOCness, whatever. I'd just like to know when a story's going to punch me in the fucking face, thanks. Ow.

You know how when you hurt yourself unexpectedly, you get those instant tears of pain and shock? You're not really crying, it's more like your body's WTF, no? Yeah. Three times last night, I stumbled into fucking stories like that.

Here! Have a fist to the face:

Reads

Space Oddity

Colourblind (Which I didn't actually like that much and don't plan to re-read, but the fist-to-the-face thing's kind of an involuntary reaction.)

(Also, now want to do a list called "50 Fists to the Face...Stories that hit me like a punch". Someone, stop the madness. Because...Winners, and Where Is Thy Victory, and Hospitality, and Adaptation (fucking Adaptation, jesus hell), and Fidelius (although really, that felt more like a fist to the chest), and Nightsblooming Heartsease...Madness, I tell you.)

And consider these apologies for the fists:

Mismeasured Ingredients (Totally going on a list. Love competent!Draco.)

High Standards

Denial

And can I just say how very incredibly much the passwording of the PSA annoys me? The Restricted Section's annoying, too, but not that bad. But getting the PSA password is more trouble than I'm inclined to go to just to read stories I've never seen before.

Huh. If I did...Oh, who am I kidding, when I do that list, it's going to be terrifyingly subjective. That could be interesting. Or horrifyingly embarrassing. Or, hey! If I'm lucky, it could be both.
strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (crimes of passion (pictureankh))
Go here! Go here now, bitches!

If I had self-control, I would have waited until today and read these all in one go and had the best Valentine's ever, but I don't, so I didn't. And so now I shall scream about my favorites and you should all go read them. And, y'know, the others, but mostly these.

It's the (in)famous stripper!AU! Finally complete! With sequels (Learning Curve, Exponential Curves)!

Initial Product Offering. I kind of heart college student!Clark muchly, and the whole thing is basically a big ball of awesomeness. Especially the accidentally-coming-when-Lex-calls (not that way, you filthy whores).

Inertia! It's Hikaru no Go fic! You don't understand! I read the very first American edition of Shonen Jump and I kept up with it through Jessica's subscription and then, later, Tommy's subscription (I miss high school; people pandered to my whims back then...). So I have a secret weakness (for slash especially) for Naruto and Shaman King and Hikaru no Go. And this is slash! And it's heartbreakingly gorgeous! And you all should have already read it, it's that good.

See, I read the first little snippet of this and fell immediately in love with the title ("The Fine and Subtle Art of Cardiology"? How could I not?). And now it's wonderfully larger and it's got House in all his stalkery goodness (I will never forget the recap that described him as "Grumpy McStalkercane") and it's got obliviously slutty Wilson and it's got the ducklings! I love the ducklings! And I love this fic.

You know how much I loved the Hikaru no Go and House fics? Add that love and square it, my friends. (Trigonometric) Proofs is Macdonald Hall fic. And it is beautiful and wonderful and my heart explodes with love for it.

But nothing, nothing, matches my love for this story. IT'S THE SEQUEL TO HINDSIGHT! SHUT UP, THE CAPSLOCK IS COMPLETELY JUSTIFIED! GO, BITCHES, GO!

And if you're reading this, you better just be coming back from reading More Than, else I shun you forever and aye. SHUN! Shun like the Amish shun punk rock!

Now that that's taken care of...

I read this random conversation and was very sad when that story did not appear. And then I saw One Life to Ascend To and the joy knew no bounds. It is wondrousness and loveliness and all y'all should read it now, especially if you have anything like my unholy love for the soap opera.

And then today, Visiting Hours. It is monstrous long, and I did manage to resist reading any part of this series until VH was complete (go, delayed gratification!), so now I'm off to do that. But I already know it's going to be awesome. Because it's Pru's version of Clark and Lex's canon son.

So. Happy ficcing. And Happy Valentine's Day.

ETA: OMG, you don't know how much trouble I went to so as to link to that conversation. I had to go through like 80 lj entries. I'd bookmarked, because, hey, soap operas, but then MSN went crazy and...whole big thing.

Also, couple things I meant to mention?

I feel I should get some kind of medal for all the uploading and sharing I have done today. I have spread joy wherever I have gone to-day.

Medal.

And I like pastry. All pastry. Just for being pastry.

Daaaaamn

Dude, the Journeyverse is what Sylum Clan wishes it could be.

Been rereading bits at the archive the past couple days. This archive? Hasn't been updated since October, so the stats are a little off. But it currently contains 109 stories, clocking in at 12112.6 Kb. And this is a WiP, people (begun three or four years ago and still going strong, with near constant updates in the yahoogroup, if not on the archive).

One series. More than 150 'verses crossed over. And about a dozen authors.

But it's so much better than Sylum Clan will ever be. The stories make a much better coherent whole, for one thing.

The Journeyverse has a definitively lead character. Tenhawk's Xander acts as a lynch pin for the series, an object of commonality for all the various characters.

It also respects the integrity of its 'verses. The Sylum Clan stories rewrite basically the whole histories of most of their characters. Which is fine; it could work if you took the time to do it right. But they didn't. They rushed it and we're left wondering how much of what we know, exactly, is still true about the characters (especially since they even go so far as to outright deny the canon of some characters).

The Journeyverse is also a lot more fluid. Relationships change and grow; people change and grow. Hell, if the scuttlebutt's right, Ten and Kyle decided to reset the whole damn 'verse for true on a fucking dare (the end of Sword of Life erased all the history developed in the previous stories for all but a handful of people). You don't get much more fluid than that.

The Sylum stories, however, are all about the permanent relationships. A majority of the characters (or at least, what seems to be a majority; I haven't actually done a tally) are lockstepped literally for life. It's a lot harder to maintain dramatic tension when you know that no matter what, the relationship will survive.

Whereas Xander has had at least two relationships end (so far). And the break-ups were real. There were actual obstacles that love alone couldn't conquer. And people, main character type people, actually die. Okay, in Sword of Life, they basically all die, but that doesn't count. In stories other than that, people die. And they don't all come back.

I think the differences in quality can actually be attributed to two things. One, the lead character thing, I already mentioned. The other is Tenhawk himself (he's the original author).

See, he's kind of a control freak. He's very clear on what he will and won't allow in his 'verse (absolutely NO Spuffy, for one thing). And he's really good at picking good authors. And, y'know, he's pretty fucking good himself. And Jesus Christ, is he prolific.

Anyway. The Journeyverse is cool (if you like Xander the same near-obsessive way I do). You should check it out.

The Journeyverse: Stories

Note: This is het. Mostly. There's some femslash (Willow/Tara seem to be considered pretty much MFEO, for one, and there some other f/f, but it's non-graphic), but there's no m/m slash. Yeah, I know, I'm a bad slasher. A massively multiverse het crossover? How could I? It's just that damn good, that's how. Also, I found Journeys on ff.net and got kind of immediately hooked without having any concept of the scope.
