strina: text only "that's absurd i love it" (txt - absurd)
I have been making a lot of tiny private posts lately, because there's stuff I want to say, but I only think of it when I'm too tired/busy reading fic/whatever to even bother capitalising shit. So! Have some thoughts:

  • I want a million stories about the logistics of superheroing (where "logistics" is anything from "all those nifty gadgets + secret identities = patents???" to "cop's-eye-view of the goddamn Batman, aka, every defense attorney's wet dream come true").

  • GUYS I WANT AROMANTIC NOT ASEXUAL KIRK WHERE SOMEBODY MAKES A SLUT-SHAMING JOKE AND HE GOES OFF ON THEM ABOUT IDIC AND RESPECTING DIFFERENCE AND HYPOCRISY, OMG I WANT IT SO MUCH.

  • The combination of this icon and this pairing has now made me really want some Lily/girl!Remus. IT WOULD BE LOVELY. Instead of the Marauders, Remus has Lily to suss out his secret and be fiercely protective and there's never any trick sixth year and what with being in love with a girl, Lily never picks a douchebag bully over Snape (you know his pride would totally take it as less a rejection than as a "if I liked dudes, MAYBE!")and BASICALLY EVERYONE LIVES HAPPILY EVER AFTER IF REMUS HAS NO PENIS.

  • Sometimes you just have to look at your own squicks and laugh because dude, slashing within the Batfamily skeeves me more than actualfax incest, what is that.

  • For some reason I am convinced that while Sherlock and Patrick Jane would hate each other, Sherlock and Shawn Spencer would find each other FASCINATING.

  • Weird little tic of mine: I need girl!Dean to be named Deanna, not Dena or Diana, because Deanna is the feminine of Dean. As in, my RL Aunt Deanna is named for my Grandpa Dean. There are just certain things that are basic knowledge to you and you can't stand when someone gets it wrong (for values of "wrong") and this is one of those things for me. Also, common-law marriage and the security features of US currency. Both of which were gotten WRONG WRONG WRONG on TV shows recently. Dear Psych: There are only twelve states where common-law marriage is still legal. CALIFORNIA IS NOT ONE OF THEM.

  • I want a story about Sarah and Kyle, but mostly Sarah, called "always a widow, never a bride" because she was a kid, a kid who fell in love with a handsome soldier and then he died before she ever had a chance to grow out of that first flush of crazy-epic-in-love and grow into loving him; she went straight from the honeymoon to funeral, basically. Kyle died and all her possibilites went with him; she was never going to have more than the child he left her, the child who would become the savior of all mankind and how do you deal with that at eighteen? Alone and pregnant and knowing that this kid is all you'll ever have and this, having him and raising him and letting him go (because it's John Connor saves the world, not John Connor succeeds Sarah Connor in saving the world, and you'd never leave him alone with that if you had a choice, but don't think too hard about how it happens because you've miles to go yet, and no luxury to pace yourself to a finish line - this has to be a sprint that lasts for decades if he's going to make it), this is all that you'll be remembered for. There is nothing you do, nothing you are, that is important to the world except for this separate person kicking in your belly, just egg becomes embryo becomes child becomes humanity's last hope, and you just a vessel, like Mary, your whole life's work waiting in you since birth and completed at nineteen when they hand you that squalling red thing you're going to die for, some day.

  • Oh my GOD, how much do I want Inception fic involving a trans character whose appearance in the dreamspace just organically represents their gender identity instead of their physical reality? Not a forgery, just an actual representation of self. Or, oh, oh! A fic about how Eames is the best at what he does partially because he's genderqueer - most people can forge themselves into different appearances, but sexswap/genderswap (I would totally use sexswap, but who says a forgery is only skindeep? Maybe it is closer to genderswap.) reads as a much bigger "change" to the dreamworld and often ends in death-by-projection, while Eames feels that whatever body he's wearing is as true as the one he was born wearing.

  • XANDER HARRIS/SLAYERS = OTP FOREVEEEEEER, OH MY GOD. Like, it feels a little weird that my one true doesn't even involve specific people, but it's just, my Xander's a mostly-straight dude who met a cute girl when he was a teenager and ended up devoting himself to a whole group of hot female superheroes, as friend and lover and protector and support staff and Watcher, and now they're part of his identity, his girls, whether he's in love with Buffy or marrying Faith or just roaming around the country with one (or more!) of the baby Slayers, fighting evil and cracking bad jokes.
strina: text only caption of two speakers "there should be a drinking game for badfic." 2nd speaker "we'd get hammered so fast." (txt - badfic)
Mmmm, terrible Xander crossovers girl. It's been just long enough that I find her stories hypnotic and not yet rage-inducing.
strina: xander confronting angelus caption "white knight" (ax - white knight)
Prolonged exposure to TtH means I just wants to grab the internets by the lapels and shake them, wailing "XAAAANDEEERRR, I LOVE HIM SO MUCH, YOU SHOULD TOOOOOOO".

Also, I am really, really sad that there's not more chapters of Seal Team 13, because 1) I totally adore and am interested in the growing pains of the Team being written before the timejump story and 2) what the fucking fuck, timejump/possibly au story, SURPRISE JOHN RINGO CROSSOVER, how am I still hanging on every word? But there's lots of people killing zombies, and Mike getting pwned, and Xander-love, and SARAH FROM THE CRAFT IS ABOUT TO LAY THE FUCKING SMACKDOWN. I am so excited to see that, y'all, you don't even KNOW.
strina: buffy with a kind of text bubble caption "anita blake?" (buffy - executioner?)
So. Turns out that Twisting the Hellmouth, my favoritest of archives, HAS AN EPUB OPTION. Oh, TtH, how do I love thee, let me count the ways:

# Excellent archive interface that lets me view a story by chapters or as a single file.

# Allows me to filter stories by crossover fandom > BtVS character > specific pairing involving that BtVS character, aka, you can look at all the Anita Blake shenanigans or you can just gorge on Buffy/Nathaniel.

# DEDICATED ARCHIVE OF BTVS CROSSOVERS; NEVER HAS AN ARCHIVE BEEN SO SUITED TO MY WHIM. WHY ARE THERE 46 GILMORE GIRLS CROSSOVERS, WHO CARES, LEMME SEE.

# There are also non-crossover and even non-BtVS works allowed, as long as they're from one of the site's established authors.

# Really accurate, if pretty static, Top Tens, which you can ALSO filter by crossover fandom! (The site limits the number of favorites per user, so you only bookmark stuff you really like.)

# TRACKING OPTIONS. You can NOT ONLY get email updates for new chapters, the site marks which stories you're tracking, what chapter you last read, and how many chapters have been posted since. I can look at the Tens page and see a generic summary and think hmmmm, but it's okay! TTH HAS MY BACK. I read all 60 chapters already!

Basically, I love them for always, even with their mediocre search function. Here, have some links , OR HEY, THEIR CROSSING OVER AWARDS ARE IN VOTING NOW.

strina: (bx - on our own)
Twisting the Hellmouth hosts 13,000 stories.

I STILL seem to have read all the good ones. At least all of the good Xander stories, as well as a large chunk of the good Buffy, Giles, and Dawn stories (there are, like, three good Wesley stories, and 3/4 of the "good" Willow stories are het, which, no).

But I looove TtH. So I keep reading these awful stories and really, at this point it's qualitatively like punching myself in the face. Over and over.

Somebody point me at something readable?

ETA: Re-reading Practical Linguistics to cleanse the palate - I was starting to wonder if terrible-Xander-crossovers girl had written anything new - and dude, I love this fic so much, even if it is Xander/Jack. Which I totally buy in this story (and in mini!Jack fic), but the age difference + my Jack/Daniel bias usually nets it a thumbs down from me. Anyway:

"I just got off the phone with one of the members of the Watcher's Council." Xander tried not to mention Buffy's name most of the time. With people involved in the occult, it sounded like he was namedropping, and outside of the occult community, people just laughed at her name.

strina: buffy with a kind of text bubble caption "anita blake?" (buffy - executioner?)
Holy SHIT, I love TtH. MY PERFECT FIC ARCHIVE, they let me go all Xander, all the time! Although I am currently flirting with some Buffy and Dawn fics as well. But awww, I have read most of the top fic. I am debating on using the "hide story" option, but I re-read so often! Hence, torn. Possibly I will end up making a second account for the hiding. Oh! It will stop trying to tell me how awesome the giant Buffy-centric noncon Anita Blakeverse fic is.

Xander + Teen Titans = WEIRDLY AMAZING, in the stories I have read thus far.

There is so much BtVS/SG-1, there should be a dedicated archive.

New pairings I TOTALLY want to read: Xander/Vala, Xander/Teal'c, Xander/Mitchell, Xander/Teyla (100% his type!), Buffy/Mitchell, Buffy/Vala, Buffy/Teal'c, Buffy/Sam, Buffy/Ronon, Dawn/Rodney, Dawn/Daniel, Dawn/Vala, Willow/Teyla, Sam/Faith, Wes/Daniel, Giles/Vala, Giles & Bra'tac = PLATONIC KINDRED SPIRITS OF TRAINING ASS-KICKING WARRIORS, OKAY, IT WOULD BE AMAZING.
strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (teyla - hee)
Holy shit, know what I would totally love to read? WILLOW/TEYLA. Tara's serenity PLUS Kennedy's confidence/ass-kicking? How could she resist?
strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (xander - dreamer)
Apparently, if you read enough of a Certain Kind* of Xander-fic, you will get a great craving for men's adventure fiction?

I am now reading The Hunt For Red October**, and am planning to read Patriot Games next. Although I may go for PG now, as I am most interested in reading Jack vs. assassins and the wiki article was stupidly vague about what happened in which book...but PG is currently my best guess. If you've read Tom Clancy, confirmation/denial would be awesome.

*Almost anything on XanderZone, many Stargate crossovers, anything written by any of the authors on the th_presents yahoo group, especially Ten himself...

**Jack Ryan is the President of choice in many of the aforementiond fics; it is almost like research?
strina: rodney mckay caption "i get knocked down but i get up again you're never gonna keep me down" (rodney - get up)
...Kind of. I have a bunch of tabs open, but it's like two new stories/30 old ones.

Leah's penguin-fic totes superior to K.McFad's, IMO.

I need more secession fic. And more fic where they treat Atlantis as a colony from the START. SECRETLY THEY SENT INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO MANUFACTURE BASIC MEDICINES (ANTIBIOTICS BUT ALSO ATROPINE, EPINEPHRINE). VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS. PLOOOOUGHS. SEED GRAIN AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR HYDROPONICS FACILITY. MEDICAL HAS AN OB-GYN WITH MIDWIFE EXPERIENCE. LARGE QUANTITIES OF THE SGC'S MOST HISTORICALLY SUCCESSFUL TRADE GOODS. MILITARY SURVIVAL GUIDES, THE SGC VERSIONS, WHERE THEY TALK ABOUT THE MOST COMMON THREATENING GESTURES ACROSS THE 89732248 KNOWN WORLDS AND "WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF MYTHOLOGICAL CREATURE ENCOUNTER (TAKE A PICTURE FOR THE WALL OF WEIRD AND RUN, THEY ARE *NEVER* AS CUDDLY AS YOU THINK, NO, EVEN THE HYDRA WAS WORSE THAN EXPECTED AND THAT TOOK SOME DOING)".

Basically, I want an Atlantis-y "Seal Team 13"-thing*, an epic story with LOGISTICS and ELITE SQUADS OF SPECIALISTS and BONDING THROUGH HARDSHIP and my favorite (in this case, Rodney) is in charge but he doesn't think he can do it, but he will, because he will not ALLOW himself to fail and prove Them right. God, can you imagine how different the show would be if Elizabeth had a team and went through the 'gate every other week to find allies, while our team had a week in-city, during which Rodney was in charge? I would read the shit out of that, y'all.

I want more allergic reactions from people-other-than-Rodney! Alien food/bugs/plants = somebody gets screwed!

The General and Dr. Sheppard 'verse gets me all conflicted. On the one hand, I mostly love it; kink + interesting worldbuilding + characters I love, yay! On the other hand, it occasionally hits my squick in that way that only things that push your buttons can, where it's so much worse because you were enjoying and wham! suprise NO. Also, I like every fic in that 'verse, including the ones by other authors, more than the actual TG&DS, because something about the clash of dynamic/non-dynamic universes really bothers me and I can't articulate why, which means it bothers me and drives me crazy.

*The Tenhawk renaissance, on the other hand, is DEFINITE. You guys, he is for me what JoBros fandom seems to be for many of you: 38% shame, 62% PURE GLEE. ST13 has Xander incorporating his supernatural consulting service so as to protect the identites of the consultants from the government. The series is basically TRAINING-LOGISTICS-BUILD STUFF-KICK ASS-WACKY CROSSOVERS-TEAMBONDING-MILITARY TRAINING-LOGISTICS-KICK ASS, I love it.
strina: text only "no one has ever done this before probably because they would be killed to death" (txt - killed to death)
JOURNEYVERSE, HOW SO TERRIBLY ADDICTIVE. IT IS SO VERY BOYS' ADVENTURE, I CANNOT STAND IT. MANY OF THE CROSSOVER TEXTS CAN ACTUALFAX BE FOUND IN THE MEN'S ADVENTURE SECTION OF BOOKSTORES, EVEN. GUNS GUNS GUNS BABES BABES BABES SAVE THE WORLD KICK ASS BUILD STUFF FORM ARMY = IT IS A WINNING FORMULA. I CANNOT LIE: I ALWAYS WANT MORE "BUILD STUFF" IN FIC, IT IS KIND OF MY FAVE. THE ARMORERS GET THEIR OWN SIDE-SERIES, THAT'S HOW MUCH "BUILD STUFF" THIS THING HAS. A+++.

WACKY CROSSOVERS ARE WACKY! WALKER TEXAS RANGER + THE PRETENDER + PREDATOR + JACK OF ALL TRADES + HACKERS + KNIGHT RIDER + ASKEWNIVERSE + HERCULES + THE CROW + LA FEMME NIKITA + BOONDOCK SAINTS + THE SHADOW? WHO DOES THAT SHIT. THESE GUYS. (WALKER TEXAS RANGER = BEST SURPRISE CROSSOVER EVER; THE FIC EQUIVALENT OF PULLING THE WALKER LEVER. AWESOME.)

I KIND OF LOVE THE FIGHT SCENES. THIS SERIES IS AWESOME AT "RIGHTEOUS ASS-WHOOPING", BUT ALSO AWESOME AT "MISTAKEN IDENTITY", AKA, XANDER KEEPS ACCIDENTALLY GETTING IN FIGHTS WITH THE GOOD GUYS.

BUT THERE IS ALSO SOME UNCONSCIOUSLY WEIRD GENDER STUFF - AKA, THE AUTHORS LOVE STRONG WOMEN AND THERE ARE LOTS OF THEM, BUT THERE'S ALSO THE WEIRD STEREOTYPED STUFF THAT YOU GET WHEN A BUNCH OF MACHO GUYS ARE TRYING TO COLLABORATIVELY WRITE STRONG WOMEN. ALSO, THE FAITH/DANA THING WEIRDS ME; THE FAITH PERSONA IS ARMOR FOR SQUISHY INNER DANA! YET ALSO THE PERSONA IS THE REAL GIRL, JUST GROWN UP! YET ALSO, FAITH WILL KICK ASS WHERE DANA CRIES ON YOUR SHOULDER AND JUST NEEDS HUGS, WHAT (HINT: CHRISTMAS, PRESENTS AND PLEAS = NOT MY FAVE. ALSO, IT MAKES HARRY TASKER LOOK LIKE A GIANT DOUCHENOZZLE. THUMBS DOWN.) ALSO, I SKIM THE AERIAL BATTLES BECAUSE I CAN'T VISUALISE THAT KIND OF FIGHT. ALSO, THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE THAT MAY BE ORIGINAL CHARACTERS OR MAY BE OBSCURE FANDOMS, I CANNOT TELL. I HONESTLY THOUGHT HE MADE UP ANDRZEJ KONZAKI, FOR ONE. BUT NO, SECRETLY HE IS ONE OF THE LIKE TWENTY CHARACTERS FROM THE STONY MAN SERIES, WHICH, IDK, SEE ABOVE RE: MEN'S ADVENTURE BOOKS. ALSO, XANDER GETS ALL THE GIRLS, TELLS ARCHANGELS TO SUCK HIS DICK, AND IS, IN ALL WAYS, INFINITELY MORE BADASS THAN YOU (I MOCK, BUT SECRETLY I KIND OF LOVE THAT PART, TOO. AND ACTUALLY HE JUST GETS, LIKE, FOUR AND A HALF GIRLS - HE IS GOING TO END UP WITH BUFFY, BUT WE ARE NOT THERE YET, HENCE, HALF.)

I TOTALLY CANNOT FIND THE THING I READ WHERE TEN ADMITTED THE REWIND WAS TOTALLY FOR SHITS AND GIGGLES, BUT I AM CONVINCED IT WAS REAL. I COULD NOT MAKE THAT UP. IN THE MIDDLE OF AN EPIC MULTIAUTHOR SERIES, ONE OF HIS BOYS WAS LIKE, HEY DUDE, I'D LIKE TO KILL EVERYONE AND THEN THEY CAN USE TIME TRAVEL TO UNDO IT; JUST LET ME PULL A JOSS FIRST, FOR SERIOUS, IT IS MY HEART'S DESIRE TO END THE WORLD. AND TEN WAS LIKE, HEY DUDE, WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY...WAIT. BRILLIANCE IS FORTHCOMING: DO THAT, AND THEN FUCK UP THE TIME TRAVEL. FUCK SEVEN DAYS, LET'S GO FOUR MOTHERFUCKING YEARS. JUST FOR THE FUN TIMES WE CAN HAVE FUCKING WITH THEM. OH, BTW? THE BAD GUYS TOTALLY HAVE TEMPORALLY SHIELDED EQUIP, SO THEY WILL BE ARRIVING AHEAD OF SCHEDULE, WHEN NO ONE IS PREPARED/GOING TO LISTEN TO THE CRAZY 16-YO WHO SAYS HE KNOW THE FUTURE. UNTIL HE WHIPS OUT HIS OWN AIR FORCE. HEEEELLL TO THE YEAH.

THIS IS SUCH GUY-FIC, IT IS HILARIOUS.
strina: comic panel caption "sweet! let's go, buddy! time to get our nerd on!" (comics - nerd on)
'Cause, okay, I love shippy stuff, and I like clever plots, but it's all in the DETAILS, man! Like, weird classes you're required to take at Starfleet Academy, a Buffyverse species of demon that can only be killed by a certain frequency of sound, babyproofing a Potterverse house when the baby can do magic, etc. Explore the quirks of your canon universe! So, have some awesome worldbuilding fics:

The Recreation of the Warrior - Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, Harper/Tyr, Tyr/others, Dylan/Beka, Dylan/others, Beka/others. Amazing exploration of Nietzschian culture and philosophy. "My people learn as small children that religion is the opiate of the masses. In practice, however, we spend far more time acknowledging our debt to our ancestors than might be expected of any Confucian monk. Since no actual deities are involved, this does not count as 'religious observance,' but merely as practical genetics." Gah, just. Tyr's voice is so strong and so consistent that it totally negates my antipathy toward first person POV in fic.

Cradle Elbows Wide - Firefly, gen. This is Sergeant Mal, guys, and it's so well-written that it's totally canon to me. All the different cultures that sent soldiers for this one cause, and we know the whole time that the cause is totally doomed; it kills me, but in the best of ways.

Reconstruction and the companion piece, Restoration - Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Xander/Spike, Willow/Tara. A post-Gift AU that does a fantastic job showing the struggle to guard the Hellmouth without your heavy-hitter. The CotH is the BEST, god; it makes so much sense and it's so very, very awesome. But there's also the protective stalking of Dawn, the Omega Plan (GENIUS), just a million little touches that bring the 'verse to life.

Father Goose Tales - Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Law and Order: SVU/Alias/Las Vegas/Gilmore Girls/Stargate SG-1, Xander/Faith, canon pairings. Guys, there's infrastructure and standard operating procedures! There's a supernatural troubles hotline! It's very much a world where the Council has a presence, complete with unintended consequences, and where the Council is an organization of professionals who have been there and done that. "Hello, you’ve reached the North American Headquarters of the Watcher’s Council, if this is an emergency please scream or press one ….. if this is not an emergency, please leave a message and a method of contact and we will get back to you. If you would like to be contacted by one of the regional offices, be sure to make that request and include your location in the message. Thank you and be safe. ….. beeep."

The Sacrifices Arc - Harry Potter, Harry/Draco, Snape/Regulus, Hermione/Zacharias, Connor/Parvati, a bunch of OC relationships that are amazing and run through het, slash, and femslash. Oh, y'all knew I was going to throw this one in there. So! This 'verse explains why there were no international efforts to stop Voldemort, gives us interesting and well-drawn systems of magic that include the awesomeness of something called "puellaris witches" - women who, through circumscribing their behavior in public and submitting to their husbands, gain the ability to turn into fucking lionesses when their children are threatened, aaaand shows us once again that humans rule the world because they are assholes. Um. I also don't feel comfortable sending people off to read this without mentioning that this shit is HARDCORE. Like, I read something that had a bunch of dire warnings for what ending up being an apocalypse, some violence, and some implied sex slavery (all of which got reversed and wiped from the characters' memories, so, weeeeeak). This is not like that. There is torture of main characters, including loss of limb. There is death, lots of it, major and minor characters, including a baby (in a fairly horrific way). There is rape, not of major characters, but there's an unrepentant (female) rapist who's one of the "good guys" and somebody gets raped to death, so. There is child abuse, physical, emotional and magical. I'm forgetting some stuff. Okay, cannibalism! There is cannibalism, by bad guys and also by a good guy under mindcontrol. ...Read it anyway! It is totally my favoritest story in all the worlds.

strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (Default)
So I am reading the terrible-Xander-crossovers girl again and oh, wow. The I'm straight-I'm straight-I'm straight-kiss me, I'm gay thing is still very distracting. Like, I don't think you can spend 300+ K of the story talking about how he loves women and then give him not one but two boyfriends. Not and have me buy it. Also, you cannot combine "I fight a secret war against the darkness, bitches! Respect me or I'll cut you!" with "I just met you, let me tell you all my secrets, up to and including the deep dark angsty ones!" Telling your boyfriend, yes. Telling his random coworkers/boss/nemesis, no. But they have the bones of good stories! It's just, the execution, not so much at all. But after I spend a few days reading her, I will be much more impressed with any goodfic I read.

I now have two fully-Internet-capable computers! And it turns out Dad hasn't been just wandering off with company property; he gets to buy it for a pittance. Desktop computer with monitors, two mouses, keyboard, and speakers? $75. WIN. It's pretty nice, except it has no sound. I fixed it once, then it unfixed itself and now I am Baffled. But! I can surf on this one and stream on the other.

strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (Default)
It would, in fact, be the second time someone used that theme. But no, this is a just a new-and-we'll-call-it-improved version of my TBP post.

04/15 - I will be ETAing this pretty much continually tonight, so, heads up.

04/15 (2) - What the hell, I haven't even finished my current junk file, let alone started on my actual recs folder.

04/16 - But wait! There's more!...Some of it from nearly three years ago. I fail so hard.

04/21 - Added: small fandoms, Sentinel, Trek, Torchwood, Heroes.

04/21 (2) - Oh fandom, how have I come to this? Reccing post-snuff Jack/Ianto - only in fucking Torchwood, I swear to god. Oh, you could do it in HL, but I bet no one ever did. Well, unless Kronos was involved, because that was some fucked-up shit. Anyway! Current mood: HORRIFIED.

05/30 - This shit is RIDICULOUS. I am never going to manage to get rid of this post. Stupid rules about themes. Which I'm apparently going to hold myself to even though no one would care.

07/13 - I ship Xander/Buffy so hard, you guys, but the fic is just...not awesome. Well, excepting [livejournal.com profile] m_mcgregor and [livejournal.com profile] lwbush. Actually, the only real ships I have for Xander are Xander/Buffy, Xander/Faith, and Xander/Buffy/Faith. Hi there, not-so-secret Xander/slayers kink! Confession: TOS is practically my least favorite of the Treks (is Enterprise anyone's favorite?). DS9 was my first Trek, back when I was wee and watching with my dad, plus, BASHIR, I love him, so slashy and fucked-up and socially retarded. And TNG has my favorite captain. Reboot is the new beloved, obvs (KIIIIIRK).

But I have been having ennui, guys. It's like last week was the week canon punched fandom in the face, what with Panic and That Other Thing, You Know the One, and it's just hard to be super-enthusiastic in the wake of that. I just want to curl in and read comforty epics; well, that and prompt people to wite the bandom h/c fics of my HEART. I am trying to think of a way to finagle Brendon Urie/Travis McCoy/Katy Perry (I already asked for Brendon/Ashlee/Pete with Bronx adorableness). So I thought, hey! I'm unlikely to add tons to the rec folder in the next few days, perfect time to update this bitch. Also, also, three things people do that I motherfucking hate: not cleaning up the html in their links so I go straight to "leave a comment" or "format=light" or whatever, misuse/ignorance of page titles/subject lines, motherfucking hard-coded fonts jesus fucking christ, because 12-pt Comedic Sans MS for 15 pages is torture.

Okay, so it's a few more than 50. And there are would have been a couple more if they hadn't been removed from the Internet. But these are the best/my favorite of the bunch.

(Also, I would love this song just for the lines Tell your boyfriend if he says he's got beef/I'm a vegetarian and I'm not fucking scared of him.)

Okay, it's a little long. Herein lie crossovers, BtVS/Angel, Harry Potter, Supernatural, Smallville, Due South, popslash, Torchwood, Lord of the Rings, RPF, and Care Bears. )

strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (mal - fist {frodolyn})
Mmmm, terrible Xander crossovers. I...don't know; this is like the one thing where the worse they are, the more I like it. It's like glee in self-defense. Like, there's this author*. And she has a metric ton of Xander crossovers that I've been reading for days. The stories, though? Include things like Willow the homophobic practicing lesbian (multiple stories!) and a kind of theme of I'm straight-I'm straight-I'm straight-kiss me, I'm gay. Oh, and she totally retcons herself; there'll be a plot point like a journal/documents proving Dumbledore was in league with the Bad and once you see it, it shows up several times in quick succession, but before that, nada, even though the good guys have supposedly had it for years. It's an afterthought. Plus she bashes a lot of female characters - Buffy, Willow, Hermione, Anya - but, except for Anya, they go from awesome to terrible to awesome (often several times). It's weird and uneven and strangely hypnotic.

Also mmmm? Hellboy fic; there should be more.

Not tasty in the least? I apparently never uploaded the last version of [livejournal.com profile] list50's by fandom masterlist and I don't know where it is. This means that the thing's about twenty lists out of date and missing 72 fandoms (yeah, right?), including at least two I'd class as major-minor**. That is going to hurt to code.

On the plus side! I, personally, have now hit 50 lists posted at [livejournal.com profile] list50 (54, actually) and the latest is one y'all might want to check out; I went back to my roots a bit and did a theme, crossovers: Don't Forget Your Passport: 50 More Treks Through the Multiverse. The standard Buffy crossovers, some of which don't even feature Xander!, and then some weird-but-brilliant xovers like Doctor Who/Tin Man, Supernatural/Criminal Minds, and Alias/The L Word. Good stuff!

*I will totally name names if asked, because I hate it when people talk about fic and then refuse to elaborate, but it feels rude to just bust out with it.

**I have too many fandoms. Therefore, I've got four that count as major (BtVS, HP, SGA, crossovers, which should totally count as a separate fandom) and then I've got the 90 - 100 minor fandoms (read only occasionally and I probably really love less than a dozen or so fics per fandom) and in between, there's the major-minor, the ones where I read a lot, have read a long time, read obsessively for a month, whatever, I like a lot of fics, but not the literally hundreds like in my major-majors. Major-minor fandoms include Heroes, Torchwood, Smallville, Supernatural, RPF, and Firefly.

Okay! For those of you who weren't here last time, every little while I do a big post of all my random notes and observations. There's fic notes, fannish ponderings, RL stuff, grammar bitching, I think it, it's here. And normally I sort it by subject, but this go 'round, it's all chronological and mostly unedited. It'll date from last February to yesterday. Oh, and if there's a fic I mention that interests you, I'll do my best to hunt up a link upon request.

As I've said, I've set myself to reading things I don't, actually, want to read. Because I find them creepy. But I am making a list.

Oh, and I was thinking, and I think it's the fact that I've never seen necrophilia presented as a serious fetish that makes it not an autosquick; mostly, in my brain, necrophilia = parody.

Anyway. I can't seem to find a threesome I find squicksome on its own grounds. Like, I won't read Lucius/Draco/Snape, but I'm not interested in any of the contained pairs and I don't read Draco/not!Harry the same way I don't read John/not!Rodney. Buffy fandom made me love the illogical threesomes! It is totally not my fault. I...apparently want to read Tony/Abby/McGee? And wow, Tony/Ziva/Gibbs would be awesome, especially post-ep discipline fic for that one with the Korean spy!wife. Oh god, why has no one written that? Or maybe someone has, in which case, I must have it.

This exercise is surprisingly interesting. I now yearn for pairings/groupings I never contemplated. Like Tony/Jen. And Tony/Gibbs/Jen. Because after Gibbs fucks off to Mexico, Tony and Jen work together more and then they have friend- and/or commiseration-sex and get all close and then Gibbs comes back and is Displeased, because Gibbs is a possessive bastard and then 1) Gibbs stews for a while before Tony and Jen take pity and include him for hot and playful threesome sex or 2) Tony and/or Jen suggests Scenario 1, their lover is jealous because this was supposed to be a relationship based on more than a common bastard, there is Angst on the part of the lovers and Angst on the part of Gibbs (his return has made the people he loves miserable!), and then there is some drinking and the jealous lover seeks solace in Gibbs' arms, jealousy all 'round, misunderstandings, more sex and alcohol, some confessions, and finally, happy athletic threesome sex or 3) Gibbs decides to make Amends for running off by slowly and diabolically seducing the pair into his bed, as a pair, and then there is much porn or 4) Gibbs goes all masterful and convinces the two to join him for scorching threesome bondage-sex and then just...keeps them. And apparently I'm not getting off this fantasy-story tangent and should just give up and what I planned to say. Ah, well.

I think I could maybe go for some Zack/Hodgins/Angela. Hodgins' crush on Angela seems obvious enough, and if you combine that with Zack living with him and Zack's obvious affection and respect for Angela, I'm sure many nifty things could happen. Like, Zack and Angela date, or Zack and Angela have a nonromantic sexual affair, whatever, and Hodgins realizes he is, in fact, jealous of both of them. This makes him hostile, which confuses Zack and angers Angela. Eventually it erupts into a confrontation in the lab in which Hodgins grabs Zack and kisses him in front of God, Angela, and everybody. Angela finds boykissing hot and is saucily delighted. Threeway dating, possibly the kept boy thing crops up (story of my HEART, why will no one write it?), happy ending with sex for all! Very good sex, because I bet Angela's wicked in the sack and mmmm, Zack and his incredibly long fingers and his perfectionism.

And I would not say no to Brennan/Booth/Angela. What with Brennan/Angela being my favorite, and Brennan/Booth being the show's favorite, and Angela canonically digging Booth.

Lalala, what else. Oooh, Firefly, with the practically-canonical bizarre threesome of Simon/River/Kaylee, which is always fun. As is Jayne/Simon/Mal, which I adore. But you know what I want to see. More Simon/Zoe/Wash. And mmmmm, Simon/Inara/Mal, which I've never seen and am now keenly interested in, because those would be some interesting dynamics, with Mal's jealousy and Simon's uptightness and Inara's determination to remain emotionally uninvolved. Oh, she could seduce them both, planning on leaving them paired together because she can't keep Mal dangling after her, temptation and torment both, and then finding herself completely unable to untangle herself, because Simon loves hard, harder than is sane or rational or proper, and it's impossible to walk away from that depth or fierceness of feeling, and Mal, when has she ever been able to resist Mal as much as she means to? And it's infinitely harder now, when instead of calling her a whore, he just gives her these slow grins like he sees right through Companion Serra, and she eventually has to throw up half-baffled hands in resignation and content herself with two gorgeous steady lovers and a life and family unlike anything she ever planned.

And now is when I again long for Buffy Summers threesomes. I want more Buffy/Willow/Xander, and Buffy/Wesley/Angel, and Buffy/Wesley/Faith (especially in the Wishverse!), and Buffy/Ethan/Giles, and Buffy/Xander/Faith (OT3! shut up, wins at life!), and Buffy/Darla/Angel (just once! I want to read it once! preferably with angry pregnant Darla because oh, the shenanigans my mind is hinting at), and Buffy/Xander/Spike (Buffy-never-died AU, or there's the horribly angsty Buffy-uses-them-both-for-sex story, where they find out about each other and there's hostility and shame, but she manipulates them into simultaneously bedding her and gradually the men grow closer and end up forcing Buffy into an epiphany and then there is a long road to a more healthy relationship and dammit, no one's ever gonna do that one). And then there's the Buffy/Xander/Dawn where, a couple-few years post-Chosen, a mysterious Something happens to Xander in Africa and he ends up with near-total amnesia and the only personal information he retains are a few scattered memories of Dawn. He's sent to Rome to convalesce and finds himself attached quite firmly to Dawn, but also oddly drawn to her vibrant older sister. Blah blah, angst, magical shenanigans, eventually, threesome, and Xander later regains his memory but remains quite happy with his new situation - he always has had a weakness for Summers women. Oh, and I've read one Xander/Willow/Cordy fic and am quite convinced there should be more.

I believe I've bitched before about the lack of post-enzyme Rodney/Ronon/Teyla? I mean there's Sweat, but I want more, and bigger, because I'm interested. And speaking of things I've seen only once, I wouldn't be averse to more Teyla/Elizabeth/Rodney. Or hell, Teyla/Elizabeth/Ronon. And then I have this whole post I keep meaning to type up about girl!Rodney having sex with Cadman and Ronon, maybe separately, maybe both at once. Oh! Rodney/Cadman/Vala! Oh, man, that would amuse me endlessly; someone should totally do that. Hmmm, Teyla/Elizabeth/Kate as just a regular tension relief kind of thing. Or hee, Teyla/Elizabeth/Zelenka as told by an outside observer would win.

And oh, how I used to long for Meredith/Izzie/George. Or George/Izzie/Alex. Now, though, I turn my yearning toward Burke/Cristina/George, because all three of them WIN. Come on, you know you want it. Because 1) Burke could totally date two interns and get away with it, 2) George is adorable, deserves mad amounts of sex, and has a giant (and totally requited) man-crush on Burke, and 3) competitive!Cristina is hot like burning - Cristina turns everything into a competition - any threesome involving Cristina automatically doubles its hot-like-burning quotient. I mean, I like Callie and all, but it'd be kind of awesome if she went crazy on George and Burke comforted him and there were Feelings and George immediately chose the avoidance/denial route and Burke was wounded and Cristina tried to fix it and weaseled out of George why he needed some time and being simultaneously pleased at having such an awesome boyfriend that he turned George gay and pissed because hey! her boyfriend! Then Burke gets it out of her and admits that he, too, has the Feelings, but he loves Cristina and is committed to her, and George is right, maybe they should just take some time... And then Cristina brings George home and is very matter-of-fact about how at least George isn't another girl, as she's not fucked-up enough to be either the Addison or the Meredith in this situation and also, she's the best girlfriend ever and she hopes Burke realizes that this means she gets to win every argument, ever, right on down as to whether people who run recreationally are, in fact, deficient. So there.

And finally, I want a post-HBP fic that starts Harry/Luna and ends Harry/Luna/Draco. I want it set before the defeat of Voldemort; I want it to be a goodly distance from the end of HBP; I want Draco to be miserable, confused, horribly disadvantaged, and with a massive crush on Harry; and I want Luna to convince Harry to give Draco a chance to prove himself. There would be lust and distrust and anger, confusion and grudging acceptance and growing attachment, angst and love and thrilling heroics. It would be awesome, bitches, and I shall leave you to contemplate that.

Okay, I lie, but only because I just realized I also want Harry/Luna/Ron. And possibly Harry/Luna/Neville. I'm already an established fan of Harry/Ginny/Luna and I've got some Harry/Luna/Hermione queued up to read tomorrow. Basically? Luna wins at threesomes and hey, maybe I could go for some Ginny/Luna/Neville...

Anyway! Some H/G/L for you:
Count the Way
A Progression of Third Wheels
Cravings and Compulsions
Severus Snape and the Dubious Duty
True Moon and The Opposite of an Eclipse

ETA: Took me two day to realize hey, I never did finish typing that. So, you may have briefly seen the incomplete version on the 18th. Anyway. Have some music! The B for Brontosaurus website, with four songs for free download. Who Will Sail My Ship Ashore? has always struck me a threesome-y song, and I am currently infatuated with Soda Pop Rock.

Also? On that H/L/Hr story? Author ended it with a reset and prophecy of doom. Bitch freaking move.

No, really, this good mood is strange and inexplicable considering:

1) My car is thirty miles away.

2) I have no money.

3) My cell phone is missing.

But! My stint at [livejournal.com profile] rec50 is over and I didn't completely fail, so I will take what joy I can. Also, today there was okra and pan-fried chicken and seriously the best jello ever (strawberry jello cubes, served with diced strawberries and pear slices). Oh, okra. Oh, fruit. So much love.

Hey! My birthday's on the 20th. Thought I'd mention, because I, personally, am the suck at remembering birthdays (btw, Alyssa? happy birthday? I'm worst friend ever and you should feel free to completely ignore my natal day?).

God, I miss money. I want books, and new clothes, and Taco Bell, and maybe a paid account.

Anyway. Good mood. So you guys get random observations! Because I'm a giver.

1) Something that never fails to make me laugh? Stories where even the Death Eaters are looking at Voldemort and going "that bitch is crazy".

Sometimes it's just an observation, sometimes it makes them form anti-Voldemort cabals, whatev. I find it hi-larious. Because dude, bitch is crazy

2) BtVS is my favorite fandom for wild-ass pairings. I would never in a million years buy about half the pairings I've read, but by god, I've enjoyed reading them. Because Dawn/Illyria is brilliance and you cannot tell me otherwise.

3) Huh. I am possibly more disturbed than I generally like to admit. Apparently a large part of my H/D shipping foundation is that they can both be such bastards. To each other and to other people, and basically, bastard + bastard = YAY in my head. Also? OMG, I LOVE UNDERWATER LIGHT AND IT IS FINISHED AND THE AWESOMENESS ABOUNDS.

4) I have apparently picked up a new omg-wtf threesome: Harry/Ginny/Tom. Yeah, I'm disgusted with myself, too.

5) Anime fandoms are the hardest for me to start cold with. That has not stopped me from lately trying to read Prince of Tennis and Death Note.

6) I think the reason I'm able to buy such a wide range of characterizations in my HP fic is that these are children's books written in third-person limited. The narration isn't necessarily accurate because we know what Harry knows, and because they're children's books, there is far more black and white than you'd find in a real situation, or even an adult novel.

7) In a lot of pre-HBP fic, I kinda want Harry to just say fuck it to the manipulation and form his own side. Like he's kind of doing in Gentry Green, and like he did in In Memory I. It's the same part of me that kind of wants Atlantis to say fuck it, we're a colony, call a spade a spade, SGC.

8) I don't get people freaking out because they recc'd with a caveat. Because you know what? That still means you did good with something. Most things aren't unadulteratedly good and I don't see why it's better to pretend they are.

9) You can read all 50 of my HP recs here, and all 40 of my finished Xander recs here.

10) Most of the original slash I've read desperately needs a good, hard beta. I just read a story that I mostly really liked (the end was a little rushed, but it was overall pretty good), but I kept getting thrown out of the story because of the malapropisms. Violation in place of volition, horn instead of hone, and on and on and on. Are people just less willing to check origfic? It be crazy.
