So I'm reading a Devil Wears Prada fic set in a Merry Gentry/Anita Blake fusion 'verse and I have to keep stopping to grit my teeth because THAT WORLDBUILDING IS INCORRECT. It's not even the hand-wavey collision-of-three-worlds stuff, it's stuff like using "fey" and "sidhe" interchangeably, which, no. Like, I am ALL KINDS of excited to read descended-from-sex-deities Andy, but IDK how I feel about reading fic where I'm more familiar with canon than the author. IT IS NOT A SITUATION I HAVE ENCOUNTERED MUCH. But I'm going to be really weirded out if my personal canon-versus-fanon stumbling block is a LKH fandom.

Just saying.
strina: text only "that's absurd i love it" (txt - absurd)
I have been making a lot of tiny private posts lately, because there's stuff I want to say, but I only think of it when I'm too tired/busy reading fic/whatever to even bother capitalising shit. So! Have some thoughts:

  • I want a million stories about the logistics of superheroing (where "logistics" is anything from "all those nifty gadgets + secret identities = patents???" to "cop's-eye-view of the goddamn Batman, aka, every defense attorney's wet dream come true").

  • GUYS I WANT AROMANTIC NOT ASEXUAL KIRK WHERE SOMEBODY MAKES A SLUT-SHAMING JOKE AND HE GOES OFF ON THEM ABOUT IDIC AND RESPECTING DIFFERENCE AND HYPOCRISY, OMG I WANT IT SO MUCH.

  • The combination of this icon and this pairing has now made me really want some Lily/girl!Remus. IT WOULD BE LOVELY. Instead of the Marauders, Remus has Lily to suss out his secret and be fiercely protective and there's never any trick sixth year and what with being in love with a girl, Lily never picks a douchebag bully over Snape (you know his pride would totally take it as less a rejection than as a "if I liked dudes, MAYBE!")and BASICALLY EVERYONE LIVES HAPPILY EVER AFTER IF REMUS HAS NO PENIS.

  • Sometimes you just have to look at your own squicks and laugh because dude, slashing within the Batfamily skeeves me more than actualfax incest, what is that.

  • For some reason I am convinced that while Sherlock and Patrick Jane would hate each other, Sherlock and Shawn Spencer would find each other FASCINATING.

  • Weird little tic of mine: I need girl!Dean to be named Deanna, not Dena or Diana, because Deanna is the feminine of Dean. As in, my RL Aunt Deanna is named for my Grandpa Dean. There are just certain things that are basic knowledge to you and you can't stand when someone gets it wrong (for values of "wrong") and this is one of those things for me. Also, common-law marriage and the security features of US currency. Both of which were gotten WRONG WRONG WRONG on TV shows recently. Dear Psych: There are only twelve states where common-law marriage is still legal. CALIFORNIA IS NOT ONE OF THEM.

  • I want a story about Sarah and Kyle, but mostly Sarah, called "always a widow, never a bride" because she was a kid, a kid who fell in love with a handsome soldier and then he died before she ever had a chance to grow out of that first flush of crazy-epic-in-love and grow into loving him; she went straight from the honeymoon to funeral, basically. Kyle died and all her possibilites went with him; she was never going to have more than the child he left her, the child who would become the savior of all mankind and how do you deal with that at eighteen? Alone and pregnant and knowing that this kid is all you'll ever have and this, having him and raising him and letting him go (because it's John Connor saves the world, not John Connor succeeds Sarah Connor in saving the world, and you'd never leave him alone with that if you had a choice, but don't think too hard about how it happens because you've miles to go yet, and no luxury to pace yourself to a finish line - this has to be a sprint that lasts for decades if he's going to make it), this is all that you'll be remembered for. There is nothing you do, nothing you are, that is important to the world except for this separate person kicking in your belly, just egg becomes embryo becomes child becomes humanity's last hope, and you just a vessel, like Mary, your whole life's work waiting in you since birth and completed at nineteen when they hand you that squalling red thing you're going to die for, some day.

  • Oh my GOD, how much do I want Inception fic involving a trans character whose appearance in the dreamspace just organically represents their gender identity instead of their physical reality? Not a forgery, just an actual representation of self. Or, oh, oh! A fic about how Eames is the best at what he does partially because he's genderqueer - most people can forge themselves into different appearances, but sexswap/genderswap (I would totally use sexswap, but who says a forgery is only skindeep? Maybe it is closer to genderswap.) reads as a much bigger "change" to the dreamworld and often ends in death-by-projection, while Eames feels that whatever body he's wearing is as true as the one he was born wearing.

  • XANDER HARRIS/SLAYERS = OTP FOREVEEEEEER, OH MY GOD. Like, it feels a little weird that my one true doesn't even involve specific people, but it's just, my Xander's a mostly-straight dude who met a cute girl when he was a teenager and ended up devoting himself to a whole group of hot female superheroes, as friend and lover and protector and support staff and Watcher, and now they're part of his identity, his girls, whether he's in love with Buffy or marrying Faith or just roaming around the country with one (or more!) of the baby Slayers, fighting evil and cracking bad jokes.

Prolonged exposure to TtH means I just wants to grab the internets by the lapels and shake them, wailing "XAAAANDEEERRR, I LOVE HIM SO MUCH, YOU SHOULD TOOOOOOO".

Also, I am really, really sad that there's not more chapters of Seal Team 13, because 1) I totally adore and am interested in the growing pains of the Team being written before the timejump story and 2) what the fucking fuck, timejump/possibly au story, SURPRISE JOHN RINGO CROSSOVER, how am I still hanging on every word? But there's lots of people killing zombies, and Mike getting pwned, and Xander-love, and SARAH FROM THE CRAFT IS ABOUT TO LAY THE FUCKING SMACKDOWN. I am so excited to see that, y'all, you don't even KNOW.

So. Turns out that Twisting the Hellmouth, my favoritest of archives, HAS AN EPUB OPTION. Oh, TtH, how do I love thee, let me count the ways:

# Excellent archive interface that lets me view a story by chapters or as a single file.

# Allows me to filter stories by crossover fandom > BtVS character > specific pairing involving that BtVS character, aka, you can look at all the Anita Blake shenanigans or you can just gorge on Buffy/Nathaniel.

# DEDICATED ARCHIVE OF BTVS CROSSOVERS; NEVER HAS AN ARCHIVE BEEN SO SUITED TO MY WHIM. WHY ARE THERE 46 GILMORE GIRLS CROSSOVERS, WHO CARES, LEMME SEE.

# There are also non-crossover and even non-BtVS works allowed, as long as they're from one of the site's established authors.

# Really accurate, if pretty static, Top Tens, which you can ALSO filter by crossover fandom! (The site limits the number of favorites per user, so you only bookmark stuff you really like.)

# TRACKING OPTIONS. You can NOT ONLY get email updates for new chapters, the site marks which stories you're tracking, what chapter you last read, and how many chapters have been posted since. I can look at the Tens page and see a generic summary and think hmmmm, but it's okay! TTH HAS MY BACK. I read all 60 chapters already!

Basically, I love them for always, even with their mediocre search function. Here, have some links , OR HEY, THEIR CROSSING OVER AWARDS ARE IN VOTING NOW.

The crossovers list I didn't really know I was working on! AKA, "Take Only What You Can Carry: Even More Treks Through the Multiverse".

Containing gen (really quite a lot of gen, this time - WEIRD), het, slash, femslash, threesomes, UST, human/nonorganic and nonorganic/nonorganic, character death, apocalypses, time travel, and, of course, crossovers and fusions, some of which are so perfectly and completely meant-to-be that they may leave you OTP'ing ENTIRE FANDOMS (for the record, "Macdonald Hall/St Trinian's" is my OTP, while my two OT3s are "Leverage/The Losers/The A-Team" and "Iron Man/Transformers/Top Gear").

Also, I very much desire a sequel to The Fires in Their Eyes where Dean Winchester, Neal Caffrey, and Kate Moreau ACTUALFAX HAVE THAT THREESOME (sadly, children, the story stops at the AWESOME SHENANIGANS/KISSING/FRIENDSHIP stage* - I heart that stage, truly I do, but as this is pre-series for both 'verses, my brain just keeps appending "AND THEN IT ALL GOES WRONG FOR EVERYONE" and it makes me sad).

*As the story is marked gen, I don't feel this is spoiler territory.

Currently, I'm reading "archives" more than "fandoms". Basically, I am falling in love with TtH (again) and the AO3 (for the first time). And I know the AO3 is this whole issue, but really, I am pretty whatever on that aspect?

Strictly as an archive, though, I am finding it hilarious. It seems to be attracting mostly more experienced fans, so it's not as scary as ff.net, but the categories are super-broad, and weirdly skewed. Like, some small fandoms are pretty well-represented - 100+ Nancy Drew fics, for example - while some larger fandoms are barely there at all. Or, like, Repo! fandom; on LJ/ff.net, it seems at least half Graverobber/Shilo. On AO3, G/S shows up in exactly one of the 40+ stories, and that fic is actually more Graverobber/Amber.

TtH is totally still my archive of choice, though. I am reduced to reading anime crosses, now, and they are pretty uniformly terrible. "Xander gets every girl" = awesome in comics fandoms, terrible in anime fandoms. Also, I would enjoy SPN crosses more if I could just filter out all the Buffy/Dean (would be interesting, if not for the fact that most of it seems to be written by exactly the kind of Buffy-champions I like least), Faith/Dean (they would totally reinforce each other in terrible ways), and Faith/Sam (just no). Dawn/Dean! Connor/Dean! Dean/Xander! Xander/Ellen, come on, guys, it would be amazing!
strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (Default)
TtH is good again! Well, kind of. I'm in the sweet spot of "Ardeths Bed Slave"? I CAN'T WAIT TO READ THAT instead of, y'know, focusing on the whole "bed slave" + no apostrophe thing.

...I'm totally about to check out terrible-Xander-crossovers girl.

But! I am also legit excited that 1) there's Buffy/Top Gear fic!, and 2) somehow, GILMORE GIRLS is one of the top television categories - only 46 stories, but hey, I haven't read 46 stories in the actual Gilmore Girls fandom, so.

Dude

Twisting the Hellmouth hosts 13,000 stories.

I STILL seem to have read all the good ones. At least all of the good Xander stories, as well as a large chunk of the good Buffy, Giles, and Dawn stories (there are, like, three good Wesley stories, and 3/4 of the "good" Willow stories are het, which, no).

But I looove TtH. So I keep reading these awful stories and really, at this point it's qualitatively like punching myself in the face. Over and over.

Somebody point me at something readable?

ETA: Re-reading Practical Linguistics to cleanse the palate - I was starting to wonder if terrible-Xander-crossovers girl had written anything new - and dude, I love this fic so much, even if it is Xander/Jack. Which I totally buy in this story (and in mini!Jack fic), but the age difference + my Jack/Daniel bias usually nets it a thumbs down from me. Anyway:

"I just got off the phone with one of the members of the Watcher's Council." Xander tried not to mention Buffy's name most of the time. With people involved in the occult, it sounded like he was namedropping, and outside of the occult community, people just laughed at her name.

strina: buffy with a kind of text bubble caption "anita blake?" (buffy - executioner?)
Holy SHIT, I love TtH. MY PERFECT FIC ARCHIVE, they let me go all Xander, all the time! Although I am currently flirting with some Buffy and Dawn fics as well. But awww, I have read most of the top fic. I am debating on using the "hide story" option, but I re-read so often! Hence, torn. Possibly I will end up making a second account for the hiding. Oh! It will stop trying to tell me how awesome the giant Buffy-centric noncon Anita Blakeverse fic is.

Xander + Teen Titans = WEIRDLY AMAZING, in the stories I have read thus far.

There is so much BtVS/SG-1, there should be a dedicated archive.

New pairings I TOTALLY want to read: Xander/Vala, Xander/Teal'c, Xander/Mitchell, Xander/Teyla (100% his type!), Buffy/Mitchell, Buffy/Vala, Buffy/Teal'c, Buffy/Sam, Buffy/Ronon, Dawn/Rodney, Dawn/Daniel, Dawn/Vala, Willow/Teyla, Sam/Faith, Wes/Daniel, Giles/Vala, Giles & Bra'tac = PLATONIC KINDRED SPIRITS OF TRAINING ASS-KICKING WARRIORS, OKAY, IT WOULD BE AMAZING.
strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (teyla - hee)
Holy shit, know what I would totally love to read? WILLOW/TEYLA. Tara's serenity PLUS Kennedy's confidence/ass-kicking? How could she resist?
strina: text only "no one has ever done this before probably because they would be killed to death" (txt - killed to death)
JOURNEYVERSE, HOW SO TERRIBLY ADDICTIVE. IT IS SO VERY BOYS' ADVENTURE, I CANNOT STAND IT. MANY OF THE CROSSOVER TEXTS CAN ACTUALFAX BE FOUND IN THE MEN'S ADVENTURE SECTION OF BOOKSTORES, EVEN. GUNS GUNS GUNS BABES BABES BABES SAVE THE WORLD KICK ASS BUILD STUFF FORM ARMY = IT IS A WINNING FORMULA. I CANNOT LIE: I ALWAYS WANT MORE "BUILD STUFF" IN FIC, IT IS KIND OF MY FAVE. THE ARMORERS GET THEIR OWN SIDE-SERIES, THAT'S HOW MUCH "BUILD STUFF" THIS THING HAS. A+++.

WACKY CROSSOVERS ARE WACKY! WALKER TEXAS RANGER + THE PRETENDER + PREDATOR + JACK OF ALL TRADES + HACKERS + KNIGHT RIDER + ASKEWNIVERSE + HERCULES + THE CROW + LA FEMME NIKITA + BOONDOCK SAINTS + THE SHADOW? WHO DOES THAT SHIT. THESE GUYS. (WALKER TEXAS RANGER = BEST SURPRISE CROSSOVER EVER; THE FIC EQUIVALENT OF PULLING THE WALKER LEVER. AWESOME.)

I KIND OF LOVE THE FIGHT SCENES. THIS SERIES IS AWESOME AT "RIGHTEOUS ASS-WHOOPING", BUT ALSO AWESOME AT "MISTAKEN IDENTITY", AKA, XANDER KEEPS ACCIDENTALLY GETTING IN FIGHTS WITH THE GOOD GUYS.

BUT THERE IS ALSO SOME UNCONSCIOUSLY WEIRD GENDER STUFF - AKA, THE AUTHORS LOVE STRONG WOMEN AND THERE ARE LOTS OF THEM, BUT THERE'S ALSO THE WEIRD STEREOTYPED STUFF THAT YOU GET WHEN A BUNCH OF MACHO GUYS ARE TRYING TO COLLABORATIVELY WRITE STRONG WOMEN. ALSO, THE FAITH/DANA THING WEIRDS ME; THE FAITH PERSONA IS ARMOR FOR SQUISHY INNER DANA! YET ALSO THE PERSONA IS THE REAL GIRL, JUST GROWN UP! YET ALSO, FAITH WILL KICK ASS WHERE DANA CRIES ON YOUR SHOULDER AND JUST NEEDS HUGS, WHAT (HINT: CHRISTMAS, PRESENTS AND PLEAS = NOT MY FAVE. ALSO, IT MAKES HARRY TASKER LOOK LIKE A GIANT DOUCHENOZZLE. THUMBS DOWN.) ALSO, I SKIM THE AERIAL BATTLES BECAUSE I CAN'T VISUALISE THAT KIND OF FIGHT. ALSO, THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE THAT MAY BE ORIGINAL CHARACTERS OR MAY BE OBSCURE FANDOMS, I CANNOT TELL. I HONESTLY THOUGHT HE MADE UP ANDRZEJ KONZAKI, FOR ONE. BUT NO, SECRETLY HE IS ONE OF THE LIKE TWENTY CHARACTERS FROM THE STONY MAN SERIES, WHICH, IDK, SEE ABOVE RE: MEN'S ADVENTURE BOOKS. ALSO, XANDER GETS ALL THE GIRLS, TELLS ARCHANGELS TO SUCK HIS DICK, AND IS, IN ALL WAYS, INFINITELY MORE BADASS THAN YOU (I MOCK, BUT SECRETLY I KIND OF LOVE THAT PART, TOO. AND ACTUALLY HE JUST GETS, LIKE, FOUR AND A HALF GIRLS - HE IS GOING TO END UP WITH BUFFY, BUT WE ARE NOT THERE YET, HENCE, HALF.)

I TOTALLY CANNOT FIND THE THING I READ WHERE TEN ADMITTED THE REWIND WAS TOTALLY FOR SHITS AND GIGGLES, BUT I AM CONVINCED IT WAS REAL. I COULD NOT MAKE THAT UP. IN THE MIDDLE OF AN EPIC MULTIAUTHOR SERIES, ONE OF HIS BOYS WAS LIKE, HEY DUDE, I'D LIKE TO KILL EVERYONE AND THEN THEY CAN USE TIME TRAVEL TO UNDO IT; JUST LET ME PULL A JOSS FIRST, FOR SERIOUS, IT IS MY HEART'S DESIRE TO END THE WORLD. AND TEN WAS LIKE, HEY DUDE, WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY...WAIT. BRILLIANCE IS FORTHCOMING: DO THAT, AND THEN FUCK UP THE TIME TRAVEL. FUCK SEVEN DAYS, LET'S GO FOUR MOTHERFUCKING YEARS. JUST FOR THE FUN TIMES WE CAN HAVE FUCKING WITH THEM. OH, BTW? THE BAD GUYS TOTALLY HAVE TEMPORALLY SHIELDED EQUIP, SO THEY WILL BE ARRIVING AHEAD OF SCHEDULE, WHEN NO ONE IS PREPARED/GOING TO LISTEN TO THE CRAZY 16-YO WHO SAYS HE KNOW THE FUTURE. UNTIL HE WHIPS OUT HIS OWN AIR FORCE. HEEEELLL TO THE YEAH.

THIS IS SUCH GUY-FIC, IT IS HILARIOUS.

So I am reading the terrible-Xander-crossovers girl again and oh, wow. The I'm straight-I'm straight-I'm straight-kiss me, I'm gay thing is still very distracting. Like, I don't think you can spend 300+ K of the story talking about how he loves women and then give him not one but two boyfriends. Not and have me buy it. Also, you cannot combine "I fight a secret war against the darkness, bitches! Respect me or I'll cut you!" with "I just met you, let me tell you all my secrets, up to and including the deep dark angsty ones!" Telling your boyfriend, yes. Telling his random coworkers/boss/nemesis, no. But they have the bones of good stories! It's just, the execution, not so much at all. But after I spend a few days reading her, I will be much more impressed with any goodfic I read.

I now have two fully-Internet-capable computers! And it turns out Dad hasn't been just wandering off with company property; he gets to buy it for a pittance. Desktop computer with monitors, two mouses, keyboard, and speakers? $75. WIN. It's pretty nice, except it has no sound. I fixed it once, then it unfixed itself and now I am Baffled. But! I can surf on this one and stream on the other.

It would, in fact, be the second time someone used that theme. But no, this is a just a new-and-we'll-call-it-improved version of my TBP post.

04/15 - I will be ETAing this pretty much continually tonight, so, heads up.

04/15 (2) - What the hell, I haven't even finished my current junk file, let alone started on my actual recs folder.

04/16 - But wait! There's more!...Some of it from nearly three years ago. I fail so hard.

04/21 - Added: small fandoms, Sentinel, Trek, Torchwood, Heroes.

04/21 (2) - Oh fandom, how have I come to this? Reccing post-snuff Jack/Ianto - only in fucking Torchwood, I swear to god. Oh, you could do it in HL, but I bet no one ever did. Well, unless Kronos was involved, because that was some fucked-up shit. Anyway! Current mood: HORRIFIED.

05/30 - This shit is RIDICULOUS. I am never going to manage to get rid of this post. Stupid rules about themes. Which I'm apparently going to hold myself to even though no one would care.

07/13 - I ship Xander/Buffy so hard, you guys, but the fic is just...not awesome. Well, excepting [livejournal.com profile] m_mcgregor and [livejournal.com profile] lwbush. Actually, the only real ships I have for Xander are Xander/Buffy, Xander/Faith, and Xander/Buffy/Faith. Hi there, not-so-secret Xander/slayers kink! Confession: TOS is practically my least favorite of the Treks (is Enterprise anyone's favorite?). DS9 was my first Trek, back when I was wee and watching with my dad, plus, BASHIR, I love him, so slashy and fucked-up and socially retarded. And TNG has my favorite captain. Reboot is the new beloved, obvs (KIIIIIRK).

But I have been having ennui, guys. It's like last week was the week canon punched fandom in the face, what with Panic and That Other Thing, You Know the One, and it's just hard to be super-enthusiastic in the wake of that. I just want to curl in and read comforty epics; well, that and prompt people to wite the bandom h/c fics of my HEART. I am trying to think of a way to finagle Brendon Urie/Travis McCoy/Katy Perry (I already asked for Brendon/Ashlee/Pete with Bronx adorableness). So I thought, hey! I'm unlikely to add tons to the rec folder in the next few days, perfect time to update this bitch. Also, also, three things people do that I motherfucking hate: not cleaning up the html in their links so I go straight to "leave a comment" or "format=light" or whatever, misuse/ignorance of page titles/subject lines, motherfucking hard-coded fonts jesus fucking christ, because 12-pt Comedic Sans MS for 15 pages is torture.

Guys, I read a lot of fic, in a lot of different places, but Twisting the Hellmouth, a Buffy crossover archive (though it also accepts noncrossover stories in Buffy and other fandoms from its crossover authors), is totally my favorite archive. It's just neat.

It's got all the things I like in other archives - Top Tens, readable formatting, clear categories, slash/het/femslash clearly marked, the ability to view a story by chapter or as a whole - plus some. The tracking options not only give you email alerts when a story is updated, you can also choose to track just that story or every story by that author, and you can mark stories as read so you don't keep getting sucked in by the same vague and unremarkable yet sort of interesting summary. The limit on favorites lists means the Top Tens are really accurate. The categories narrow down to the point of ridiculousness! You can single out Anita Blake fanfiction, then Xander-centered, then the specific Xander-pairing of your choice. SO MUCH EASIER to avoid creepy and uninteresting pairings!

To sum up: FAVORITEST. And they just published the results of their annual awards, so it's a great time to try it! I would recommend changing the default rating filter unless you really do want it to hide all FR21 stories automatically.

Mmmm, terrible Xander crossovers. I...don't know; this is like the one thing where the worse they are, the more I like it. It's like glee in self-defense. Like, there's this author*. And she has a metric ton of Xander crossovers that I've been reading for days. The stories, though? Include things like Willow the homophobic practicing lesbian (multiple stories!) and a kind of theme of I'm straight-I'm straight-I'm straight-kiss me, I'm gay. Oh, and she totally retcons herself; there'll be a plot point like a journal/documents proving Dumbledore was in league with the Bad and once you see it, it shows up several times in quick succession, but before that, nada, even though the good guys have supposedly had it for years. It's an afterthought. Plus she bashes a lot of female characters - Buffy, Willow, Hermione, Anya - but, except for Anya, they go from awesome to terrible to awesome (often several times). It's weird and uneven and strangely hypnotic.

Also mmmm? Hellboy fic; there should be more.

Not tasty in the least? I apparently never uploaded the last version of [livejournal.com profile] list50's by fandom masterlist and I don't know where it is. This means that the thing's about twenty lists out of date and missing 72 fandoms (yeah, right?), including at least two I'd class as major-minor**. That is going to hurt to code.

On the plus side! I, personally, have now hit 50 lists posted at [livejournal.com profile] list50 (54, actually) and the latest is one y'all might want to check out; I went back to my roots a bit and did a theme, crossovers: Don't Forget Your Passport: 50 More Treks Through the Multiverse. The standard Buffy crossovers, some of which don't even feature Xander!, and then some weird-but-brilliant xovers like Doctor Who/Tin Man, Supernatural/Criminal Minds, and Alias/The L Word. Good stuff!

*I will totally name names if asked, because I hate it when people talk about fic and then refuse to elaborate, but it feels rude to just bust out with it.

**I have too many fandoms. Therefore, I've got four that count as major (BtVS, HP, SGA, crossovers, which should totally count as a separate fandom) and then I've got the 90 - 100 minor fandoms (read only occasionally and I probably really love less than a dozen or so fics per fandom) and in between, there's the major-minor, the ones where I read a lot, have read a long time, read obsessively for a month, whatever, I like a lot of fics, but not the literally hundreds like in my major-majors. Major-minor fandoms include Heroes, Torchwood, Smallville, Supernatural, RPF, and Firefly.

Miss Tonks Turns to Crime (The Poor Relation, Book 2) by Marion Chesney - best title ever. Also, an AU where Harry, Tonks, and company have to turn Grimmauld Place into a hotel to make ends meet would be awesome squared.

So I've got five lists actually in progress and then two lists I'm flirting with. There's a set of three that's half-done, a threesomes/foursomes list clocking in at about 23 - I say "about" because a few of those are just notes to pick out a Jack/Ianto/Tosh story or whatever - and then another crossovers list hovering at 20. That one's surprisingly hard, you know? I read a LOT of crossovers but, uh, many of those are just Xander love epics and therefore not really something I can rec widely.

Plus, it's a theme I used at the beginning, someone else used it after me, and then I just did a crossover pairings minilist for the anniversary. Which I would not have done if I'd known I'd be doing this three months later, 'cause those were awesome fics and I don't feel right repeating more than a couple. Practical Linguistics and Close Your Eyes and Think of England, though, were just so amazing that I can't leave them off. And I'm torn on the Vala/Captain Jack Harkness story because dude, that is BRILLIANT.

Y'all, I don't hate bugs. I am terrified of cockroaches, but I had a sincere attachment to the cotton spider that lived in my window when I was wee. I will do stuff like round the crickets up and carry them outside. Yeah, no, that's ending now. Because I don't know what the fuck happened, but there are crickets everywhere. Big crickets, normal crickets, tiny baby crickets that crawl into the walls. Somehow they appear to have escaped natural predation. It's my duty to even out the population explosion.

But that is not the point of this post (crickets! in the walls! what the hell is that). Laura claims to be incapable of finding her own fic, which, whatever, hooker, you were fannish before we ever met!

Still. Now that I have tried it, Dexter isn't a bad show. It's just, y'know, a tiny fandom that seems to be mostly badfic. So far! I should give it more than a day to wow me.

Here's the stuff I did like:

Tiny Monsters (gen) [Dexter] - Did he think about this before it happened, imagine the pure and absolute silence of a dead world? The disease that killed most of them, all of them, was too perfect, enough to make Dexter believe in a benevolent God, a God made not in man's image, but in Dexter's.

Heroics (Dexter/Rita) [Dexter] - There's only so many things a girl can do when her perfect boyfriend turns out to be a serial killer.

Use Your Illusion, Too (gen) [Dexter] - After everything with Rudy ends in far worse of a clusterfuck than all of her other relationships combined, Deb takes up knitting.

It’s only for a month but she needs something to do with her hands. At work they’re steady as stone by sheer force of will, but at home they tremble like crazy. She takes to eating sandwiches a lot because they can’t shake off a fork.

Freedom and Anarchy (Dexter/Brian pre-slash) [Dexter] - But as soon as the initial worry over Dexter’s welfare subsided, the resentment came back, bubbling up like hot tar inside him. Don’t make me choose. They had no claim to him, none, they weren’t his family, they were fake, Harry lied to Dexter and Dexter lied to Deb. Why should they mean anything to Dexter, let alone as much as Brian?

But.

It had taken the both of them to equal the one of him.
Sequel seemingly in the works.

Meeting of the Minds (gen) [Dexter/CSI] - Gil realised, quite suddenly, that he was in the presence of a monster.

Life and Death in the Cereal Aisle (gen) [Dexter/Supernatural] - Eyes clicked into place as Dexter glanced up momentarily, fully intending to turn back to the Musilux and All Bran. Everything stops for a second and Dexter has the distinct impression that the kid's looking right into him and seeing just what isn't there.

Darkly Dreaming (gen) [Dexter/Hannibal] - Hannibal has never believed in a destiny beyond his control. He doesn’t put much stock in luck, or fate, or coincidence as the great literati would have him believe. But to stumble across such a treasure in Miami, of all places, almost makes it seem possible. Sequel planned.

Also, I'm kind of in love with Gossip Girl and specifically, Serena/Blair. My favorite so far is [livejournal.com profile] fembuck's series, Audrey Can Wait, Here We Go, and Tango in D Minor (the last is a WiP). How do you not love a story with quotes like this )?

Dude, the Journeyverse is what Sylum Clan wishes it could be.

Been rereading bits at the archive the past couple days. This archive? Hasn't been updated since October, so the stats are a little off. But it currently contains 109 stories, clocking in at 12112.6 Kb. And this is a WiP, people (begun three or four years ago and still going strong, with near constant updates in the yahoogroup, if not on the archive).

One series. More than 150 'verses crossed over. And about a dozen authors.

But it's so much better than Sylum Clan will ever be. The stories make a much better coherent whole, for one thing.

The Journeyverse has a definitively lead character. Tenhawk's Xander acts as a lynch pin for the series, an object of commonality for all the various characters.

It also respects the integrity of its 'verses. The Sylum Clan stories rewrite basically the whole histories of most of their characters. Which is fine; it could work if you took the time to do it right. But they didn't. They rushed it and we're left wondering how much of what we know, exactly, is still true about the characters (especially since they even go so far as to outright deny the canon of some characters).

The Journeyverse is also a lot more fluid. Relationships change and grow; people change and grow. Hell, if the scuttlebutt's right, Ten and Kyle decided to reset the whole damn 'verse for true on a fucking dare (the end of Sword of Life erased all the history developed in the previous stories for all but a handful of people). You don't get much more fluid than that.

The Sylum stories, however, are all about the permanent relationships. A majority of the characters (or at least, what seems to be a majority; I haven't actually done a tally) are lockstepped literally for life. It's a lot harder to maintain dramatic tension when you know that no matter what, the relationship will survive.

Whereas Xander has had at least two relationships end (so far). And the break-ups were real. There were actual obstacles that love alone couldn't conquer. And people, main character type people, actually die. Okay, in Sword of Life, they basically all die, but that doesn't count. In stories other than that, people die. And they don't all come back.

I think the differences in quality can actually be attributed to two things. One, the lead character thing, I already mentioned. The other is Tenhawk himself (he's the original author).

See, he's kind of a control freak. He's very clear on what he will and won't allow in his 'verse (absolutely NO Spuffy, for one thing). And he's really good at picking good authors. And, y'know, he's pretty fucking good himself. And Jesus Christ, is he prolific.

Anyway. The Journeyverse is cool (if you like Xander the same near-obsessive way I do). You should check it out.

The Journeyverse: Stories

Note: This is het. Mostly. There's some femslash (Willow/Tara seem to be considered pretty much MFEO, for one, and there some other f/f, but it's non-graphic), but there's no m/m slash. Yeah, I know, I'm a bad slasher. A massively multiverse het crossover? How could I? It's just that damn good, that's how. Also, I found Journeys on ff.net and got kind of immediately hooked without having any concept of the scope.
