So, now I'm super into a trope that doesn't seem to even exist on the AO3. It's called Sudden Game Interface and I am jonesing so hard for more of it, in all the fandoms. For example, I would read the FUCK out of Allison Argent wakes up early/mid-season one and discovers the supernatural via accidentally entering combat with Scott (they belong to opposing factions!) instead of making out with him as intended. Alternately, Stiles munchkining everything would also be amazingly good for me.

Anyway, most of the fics I've read have been Naruto or Harry Potter, so y'all are getting ff.net recs today. All WiPs, and all gen thus far.

Naruto: Ramen Days by Rathanel - "After dying at the end of the Sand-Sound Invasion, Naruto finds that his life is governed by a strange set of rules that he is still trying to figure out. VideoGame!Naruto"

The fic that got me into this! There's a recruitment mechanic that's pretty amazing (accidental Hyuuga conscription!) and I have to give Rathanel a lot credit for making the discovery of a savepoint heart-rending instead of a way to cheat over certain stations of the canon.

Naruto: The Gamer Files by Maxfic - "Naruto has always had video games to fall back on growing up while the rest of the village pretty much treated him like garbage. What happens when Naruto wakes up to find his life has become one of the video games he loves so much. Naruto/The Gamer crossover."

There are so many stats in this fic, guys, but I love it so much anyway. I get excited every time I see the "A special skill has been created through a special act" thing - Maxfic mixes canon and original skills in a way that feels very organic and realistic.

The Adventures Of Harry Potter, the Video Game: Exploited by michaelsuave - "Harry Potter catches Voldemort's AK to the noggin only to find out that his life is a video game and he forgot to save. So what does he do? Does he return on Hard mode and work for the challenge? Heck No! Harry uses every exploit, grind, or underhanded tactic he can get his hands on. His life may be a video game, but nobody plays Harry Potter; Harry's going to exploit the system."

This is very much a comedy fic and I heart it. There's a cat battle arena featuring the terrifying Mr. Tibbles! I am looking forward to Hogwarts so fucking much, you guys.
strina: text only "I don't know! I'm making this up as I go!" (txt - making it up)
So I am doing a Thing. Fingers crossed that it will end up awesome. If anyone wants to watch me flail at it, or just wants to bookmark it for later, it's at [community profile] thisisalovesong.
strina: text only "age of the geek, baby. we run the world" (text - age of the geek)
Lomonaaeren is on the AO3, too! So anybody who loves Harry/Draco, but hates ff.net: PREPARE FOR A BEAUTIFUL ONCOMING STORM OF EPICNESS. Not all of her fics have been ported over - ff.net is clocking in at 318 stories while the AO3 is showing 234 - but it's still a couple million words of awesome. Like, literally. As in, when I did a spotlight list of my favorites in 2012, she was clocking in at 218 stories and 3.7 million words posted in under five years. She is an extraordinary machine.

Apparently she joined a while ago? But since ff is the third easiest archive to download from (AO3, then TtH, then ff, because every downloader ever interfaces with ff), I never really had a reason to look for her elsewhere and then I google searched because I was too lazy to pick her profile out of my favorites and bam!

Anyway, I have to quote my previous rec here: "I also find her endlessly fascinating...she writes in only one fandom, and 95% of her fics are the same pairing, yet there's such a breadth to her work. She's written, what, four or five Draco-is-a-Veela stories? But Veela Struck isn't like the Silence trilogy isn't like Jericho Rose isn't like A Year's Temptation. There's a rape recovery story, a story about two survivors bonded in trauma, a steadfast and unrequited devotion becoming new love story, a story about circumstance and inevitability and incompatible obligations. I love that a lot, the way she keeps turning the ideas that interest her over to find new angles instead of giving up on them after a try or two."

ALSO THERE ARE AT LEAST TWO MORE DRACO-IS-A-VEELA STORIES SINCE THEN AND THEY ARE AMAZING. GLORY BE IS DRACO THE VEELA ASSASSIN AND THEY FALL IN LOVE BETWEEN MURDER ATTEMPTS. A CHOICE OF WINGS HAS HARRY THE VEELA MATCHMAKER AND AWESOME SYMPATHETIC MAGIC AND DRACO THE INCREDIBLY PICKY. SHE SHOULD TEACH A MASTERCLASS IN THIS SHIT.

Also if you dig Harry/Draco/Snape, enjoy at least half a million words of poly goodness.

Now I'm going to go read some Benevolently Snarky Dark Lord Harry, because it is amazeballs.

*AMANUENSIS WROTE A BOOK, Y'ALL. I literally shouted holy fuck when I read the author bio. I honestly can't remember who's fannishly out under their professional pseuds, so I'm leery to name names, but there are three or four just off my flist. It's like seeing a familiar author pop up in your new fandom, except superweird.
strina: (ginger snaps - red)
I still have a bunch of Halloween-ish songs uploaded at Box.

I actually need to add some more on there, but tonight I am busy setting up my replacement Kindle.

Also, WHY did no one rec me Enemy Mine? Harry/Marcone and SO LONG and PLOTTY - I totally do not care if it's not as great as other things the road to hell is paved with or Choices. Or Near Miss or that one with the fill collection. I am totally putting it just below The Most Dangerous Thing and just above The Affairs of Wizards and Besieging Omelas. (I will always be sad that those + [archiveofourown.org profile] thehoyden's fic + [archiveofourown.org profile] lightgetsin's stories basically comprise my Dresden fandom experience. IT SO GREAT; WHY DO MORE PEOPLE NOT JUMP ON THIS. THERE SHOULD BE A HUNDRED FICS ON MY MENTAL LIST, NOT, WHAT, TWENTY-FIVE?

BLAH, BLAH, UNIVERSE IS UNFAIR. GO READ THE FIC.)
strina: text only caption "harry potter is entirely responsible for the literacy of our generation" (hp - literacy)
Guys, I am now ACTUALLY SAD for my friends not in fandom, because they will never read Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. I don't even care about the science! I care about Harry Potter, Dangerously Genre-Savvy ("yay, we completed a quest and got a minion!"), and Hermione Granger, who thinks winning is better than drugs and chose "Do your homework!" as battlecry (and made it genuinely unsettling), and Draco Malfoy, who may be Harry's friend, but still knows that he RUINS EVERYTHING, and Neville Longbottom, CHAOS HUFFLEPUFF.

It is a genuinely well-written and interesting AU and there's all kinds of thought-provoking material about science and philosophy and ethics and societal evolution, but I cannot lie - I AM IN IT FOR THE AWESOME SHENANIGANS.
strina: text only "i am fangirling so effing hard right now" (txt - fangirling)
It's like Chuunin Exam Day and Brave Eyes had a crazy/awesome polyamorous baby! Sakura's stuck in a time loop focused on the chuunin exams and uses her near-infinite supply of time to take a million levels in badass, hook up with Naruto and Hinata (flinging with Ino and Anko and others along the way), and of course, save the world. IT IS AMAZING. SO ID-FICCY AND DELICIOUS AND THERE'S H/C AND IT'S SAKURA POV AND YAAAAY POLY WITH A HEAVY FEMSLASH COMPONENT AND DID I MENTION THE D/S? Um, if you have noncon/brainwashing triggers, probably give it a miss (Tsukuyomi is a major thing in a couple of sections), but if not, GO READ IT: Time Braid (WiP).

(Also, I FOUND A WORKING LINK FOR BRAVE EYES, THE WILLOW/TARA WISHVERSE AU OF MY *HEART*! It's a good day.)
strina: dresden caption "just because you're paranoid doesn't mean there isn't an invisible demon about to eat your face" (dresden)
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED AT ALL IN DRESDEN/MARCONE, YOU MUST GO READ THIS STORY: other things the road to hell is paved with NOW, IMMEDIATELY, GO GO GO.

GUYS, IT IS AU FROM FOOL MOON AND IT HAS FEALTY AND FLIRTING AND DOMESTICITY AND FAMILIES OF CHOICE AND TALKING ABOUT FEEEEELINGS, IT IS AMAZING.

ALSO, FIRST IN A SERIES. I AM SO FREAKING EXCITED.
strina: harry potter looking out window caption "they do not speak his name" (harry - you know who)
Well that was a crappy day. But yesterday was amazing!

BECKA IS ALIVE! But no, see, at one point "In Memory I" was my most re-read of ALL fics and then she went on vacation AND WAS NEVER HEARD FROM AGAIN, until now! I don't even care that there's not a new chapter! I AM JUST SO HAPPY SHE IS NOT DEAD/PERMANENTLY DISAPPEARED.

Also, 90% of my reading for the last month has been 1) HP fic 2) from ff.net 3) that I have downloaded onto my Kindle. SO MUCH TIME TRAVEL. I did not go looking for time travel? But seriously: SHITLOADS.

GO READ THIS: His Own Man. It's possibly my favorite of this batch of time travel fics (there is a bonus of Flitwick: Stealth Genius! that I quite enjoyed). And then there's this creepy number, Ouroboros - the Epilogue like you wouldn't believe. And On the Way to Greatness, a totally badass Slytherin!Harry fic.

Basically I am ransacking some favorites lists and leaping upon time travel, harems, the DA, canon Harry leaps into another dimension, and sorting AUs. Sometimes these combine in strange and unexpected ways (for example, the time travel parody with the harem and one of my favorite Sortings ever: "HE GETS HIS OWN HOUSE.").

So. Turns out that Twisting the Hellmouth, my favoritest of archives, HAS AN EPUB OPTION. Oh, TtH, how do I love thee, let me count the ways:

# Excellent archive interface that lets me view a story by chapters or as a single file.

# Allows me to filter stories by crossover fandom > BtVS character > specific pairing involving that BtVS character, aka, you can look at all the Anita Blake shenanigans or you can just gorge on Buffy/Nathaniel.

# DEDICATED ARCHIVE OF BTVS CROSSOVERS; NEVER HAS AN ARCHIVE BEEN SO SUITED TO MY WHIM. WHY ARE THERE 46 GILMORE GIRLS CROSSOVERS, WHO CARES, LEMME SEE.

# There are also non-crossover and even non-BtVS works allowed, as long as they're from one of the site's established authors.

# Really accurate, if pretty static, Top Tens, which you can ALSO filter by crossover fandom! (The site limits the number of favorites per user, so you only bookmark stuff you really like.)

# TRACKING OPTIONS. You can NOT ONLY get email updates for new chapters, the site marks which stories you're tracking, what chapter you last read, and how many chapters have been posted since. I can look at the Tens page and see a generic summary and think hmmmm, but it's okay! TTH HAS MY BACK. I read all 60 chapters already!

Basically, I love them for always, even with their mediocre search function. Here, have some links , OR HEY, THEIR CROSSING OVER AWARDS ARE IN VOTING NOW.
strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (kirk - bw)
It is still not my preference but HOLY GOD, that was some incredible porn! D/s & poly & toys & spanking & FUCKING EACH OTHER VIA FUCKING OTHER PEOPLE, I love that when it's done right AND IT HAS NEVER BEEN DONE SO RIGHT IN ALL THE INTERNETS.

Anyway. A few awesome fics does not change my hierarchy of preferred Trek pairings. (It goes Kirk/Spock > Kirk/Uhura > Kirk/Spock/Uhura > (Kirk/Gaila OR Kirk/McCoy) > Kirk/Sulu > Gaila/awesomeness > Kirk/poly combinations of aforementioned > Gaila/Uhura > everybody else.)

BUT I am trying to make the Kirk list no more than half K/S, so...rec me something? Preferably something long and kickass?
strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (Default)
Bluebird (Jack/Ianto) [Torchwood/Addams Family] - This is the creepiest you have ever seen the Addams family, seriously.

"Cousin!" A black-haired man with a pencil moustache, flashy suit, and something terribly wrong about his eyes flung both arms out.

"Darling cousin!" A black-haired woman with something terribly wrong about her smile stood beside the man. Three children, all around the age of ten, glared from behind her skirts. And there was... something... in the hall behind them.

"It's been not nearly long enough," Ianto said. He held out his hands to the woman and kissed both cheeks. "I could have happily gone years without seeing you again. I may have to kill you all." Gwen blinked and looked at Jack, who had his eyebrows raised.

Brisance: That's Beverly Hills for Broken (Ben/Cooper) [Southland] - Ben Sherman is my favorite, guys! There's UST and fucked-upness and it's just plain awesome.

The worst thing about valet parking, Ben Sherman thinks as he paces the sidewalk, was that you had to stand around and look like a fucking idiot while they brought your car. And when you'd just left it, and the guy wasn't even back yet...he can hear Cooper laughing in his head and doesn't know why he even bothered.

Murphy's Law (Asami/Takaba, Asami/Fei Long) [Viewfinder] - Acting AU. Which I didn't think would work, but it TOTALLY does. Because their show? Is basically Viewfinder. It is AMAZING.

Fandom Appreciation Challenge

Day 3: "Leave or send feedback on three crossover fics or stories outside your main fandom(s)."

"Bonus challenge for 5 points: Rec the stories in your journal."

Since crossovers totally ARE one of my main fandoms, I couldn't resist doing them, but only if I also did some not-my-fandom stories.

iFight Crime (gen) [Supernatural/iCarly] - Okay, this story is HILARIOUS and AMAZING and basically, Sam Puckett is more badass than ANYONE, EVER, THE END.

"I'm Carly!" says the brown-haired tween.

"And I'm Sam!"

"And this is iCarly, the only webshow that cures cancer--"

"But gives you rabies!"

"What the shit is this," says Dean.

Bimonthly (gen) [BtVS/Criminal Minds] - Unsubs, just an FYI: you really have to step your game up if you wanna impress a Summers girl.

The Justice League Of Cardiff Is A Stupid Name (gen) [Torchwood/DCU] - Torchwood takes care of Superman on a rampage.

A man stood at the edge of the fountain pool -- quite a man, Jack noticed, because Jack noticed these things. Broad shoulders, wide chest, narrow hips, all well-defined by a skin-tight suit. He wore a cowl and a cape, and his eyes were diamond-shaped patches of light.

"Great," Jack sighed. "Another one."

Gwen kept the man covered as Ianto came forward. He passed Jack, which seemed like impudence and a death-wish combined, and stood face to face with the intruder.

"I'm the Batman," the intruder said.

"Well, yes, obviously," Ianto replied, eyeing him.

Batman eyed him back.

Jack and Gwen watched, fascinated, as they stared each other down. After about twenty seconds, when it seemed like one of them had to blink, Ianto licked his lips.

"Coffee?" he asked.

"Black," Batman replied.

The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea (Connor/Dean) [Supernatural/Angel] (WiP) - Okay, so I maybe have a new crossover OTP.

Sammy had a sort of hero worship going on for the guy, but Dean didn't really mind. He could share his kid brother's adoration with a superhero for fuck's sake.

Dean might've had a little of the worship going on himself, but that was another thing he'd never admit to. Connor came in handy, that was all. Tossing things around and giving them a taste of their own medicine, that was always pretty fun to watch. Plus, he'd saved Sam from himself more than once, and that garnered Dean's respect like nothing else would.

The Numbers Game (Jet/Zuko) [Doctor Who/Avatar: The Last Airbender] - Fusion; Jet is the Doctor and Zuko ends up his Companion and it is fanTAStic

“Look at these eyebrows,” the lunatic marvels, waggling them as he inspects himself in the side-lense of Zuko’s mirrored wraparounds as if he’s never seen his own face before. “Bloody beautiful these things, a man could conquer civilizations with eyebrows like these!”

“You’re just a teenager,” Zuko can’t help seeing the need to point out, not lifting his eyes from his work, and the lunatic wrinkles his nose in distaste and rubs at his jaw.

“Damn, you’re right,” he mutters, wagging his eyebrows at his reflection again. “I
swear, man, these regenerations just keep getting younger and younger, people are going to start thinking I’m having a mid-life crisis.”

Haven and Home (gen) [BtVS/The Pretender/Other Fandoms] (Series in Progress) - "Post S7 - Somewhere near the Cleveland Hellmouth lurks a house, and it's got Xander's name written all over it." LOVE THIS STORY, so you should obviously read it all, but ESPECIALLY, chaper five, aka, the Phantom of the Opera chapter:

"Okay. So, tortured soul, tragic childhood, good voice, stalker tendencies, and serious Oedipus issues," Xander summed up. "Living in the basement of a house with forty-five teenage girls, who just staged an all-female cast production of Twilight." He pressed his lips together. "I should just kill him now."

There was a long pause as everyone stared at him.

"He's got a point," Buffy said, shrugging.

Impure (gen) [Jennifer's Body] - Best movie coda ever.

Being bug-fuck crazy wasn't all bad. The food sucked, and the bedside service left a lot to be desired, but plotting bloody revenge was a breeze. Needy was already crazy dangerous--everyone said so, everyone knew it was true, and wasn't Needy a legend in Devil's Kettle?--and what was a little murder after stabbing her best friend in the heart with a box-cutter?

Cherry Without Any Stone (Rathe/Eslingen) [Points Novels] - I OTP them so hard, guys.

"You know," Eslingen said, as if they'd just been talking about something important and not sitting silently. "Lemanry's not like calling a point on someone, Nico. You don't have to corner him in public and tell him you love him quickly before he has a chance to flee."

How to Save the Day (sort of) (gen) [Night World] - I love thinking about Ash post-DoD, trying to be a knight-errant without actually, y'know, possessing a working moral compass, and this story showcases that beautifully (which is honestly more than I ever expected, because there is tragically little Night World fandom).

Skrull Wedding vows (Billy/Teddy) [Marvel] - I wish this was about 10,000 words longer, I love it so much.

"I promise not to murder you in our marriage bed while you sleep. I promise not to stab you from behind, but kill where you can see my face one last time. I promise not to bury you alive leaving you gasping for breath in the darkness." Billy stopped to look at Teddy. "Is this seriously what the wedding vows say?"

"It's much more romantic in Skrullos," Teddy replied.

Maintaining A Professional Work Environment and Optimizing Employee Satisfaction (Zuko/Mai/Haru/Jet) [Avatar: The Last Airbender] (for background, see An Illustrated Guide To The Bodyguards!AU; the art is amazing) - HAREM FIC. Where Zuko's bodyguards are also his harem and there is CROSSDRESSING and hotness and stupid boys and gangbangs! And also, like I said, totally awesome art that includes the crossdressing!

Mai is relatively certain there is some logical reason for Zuko to be wearing a wedding dress today. He is the Fire Lord, after all; generally speaking there has to be a logical reason for just about everything he does.

. . . then again, he’s also
Zuko, so the “logical reason” could extend to “got tricked into drinking cactus juice, again”.

It’s very hard to be a bodyguard to a man who’ll accept any cup you pass him at a party without question.

Resurrection-verse (Steve/Tony) [Marvel] - 177,000 words of AWESOME. This is my PLATONIC IDEAL of Civil War-era Marvel fic (it would be my platonic ideal of Marvel fic, full stop, but Civil War = ARRRGH, so, not quite). There are several stories, but for the purposes of this rec, I can only talk about the first one, so: "Doom brings Cap back from the dead, whereupon he has to deal with Doombots, Red Skull, the Mandarin, Registration, a bunch of bickering superheroes, and Tony's apparent nervous breakdown."

GUYS. This is the story that made me fall in love with Steve/Tony! There's action, and h/c, and romance, and revenge, and BADASSERY, and forgiveness, and rebuilding, and GO READ IT RIGHT NOW. Here, alt links, because the formatting on Tales of Suspense can get a little...close.

And I forgot to mention this, but a couple days ago, I posted a new list: Distaff (stories featuring female characters).

Fandom Appreciation Challenge 2010

Today's challenge: DAY 1: "Rec 3 challenge stories or fanworks in your journal." Okay, so I totally did five. But! Two of the first three to spring to mind have been recced absolutely everywhere, so I added two more obscure ones.

i'm actual (gen) [iCarly] - Written for [livejournal.com profile] 5_4_3_2's Hidden Things Challenge. FYI, I now want "hidden things" to ALWAYS mean "ladies' underwear". Amazing character voices and really, this may now be my personal canon.

Just because he's a guy doesn't mean he's not allowed to like pretty things. All of that's just society trying to keep him down. He's really just making a statement, sticking up for the rights of his fellow man.

Really, it's like a protest. In his pants.

Waking Sleeping Giants (Sookie/Eric) [True Blood] - Written for the Eric and Sookie Summer of '69 challenge on ff.net. TOTALLY my favorite from that challenge, because the idea is fascinating.

Shifters, weather-witches, psychics and sooth-sayers, we were pulled from kitchens and classrooms, backyards and bayous, wall street offices and insane asylum cells. The vampires had stepped out of their hiding places in history, we'd been shaken out, a last mad proof that the human race wasn't irrelevant.

Unlike the bloodsuckers, we don't have a common denominator. We have no historically recognized name like 'vampire.' Perhaps that's why we get left out of protests and motions of congress. It's tough to speak about us. Conservatives find our insistence on being regarded as human vexing. They whisper 'Deviant' behind their clenched fingers. Liberal student movements love the term, they put it on their signs and flags, they sew it in ink to their skins, forgetting that it was meant for those of us who will never blend seamlessly into psychedelic rave-riots for world peace. It was meant for those who wouldn't be drafted by lottery (a spell-binder there, a soul-walker here) but gleaned en masse, sorted through McCarthy's information gin, to be turned out on the front lines.

It was meant for here and now. Vietnam, in the summer of 1969. It was meant for us. 143-D of Corps 1, under the command of Captain Andre Boulain. It was meant for her, Sookie Stackhouse, pretty, blond, telepathic.

Better Hemispheres (Rathe/Eslingen) [Points Novels] - Written for Yuletide 2008. Philip and Nico in a quiet moment.

The thing about Astreianters is that they believe Astreiant's the center of the world. Philip has heard this many times, and said it too, but it's only now he lives here that he's realized it's literally true. There's a world map frescoed on the south wall of the temple of Bonfortune, and bang in the middle, big out of all proportion, is the city. Major Astreiant landmarks, like the Queen's palace and the Bonfortune temple itself, are marked with colored dots. The dots are as big as the one for the city of Esling.

It's a merchant-venturer's way of thinking. Travel and trade, yes, but always coming home in the end. Travelling in order to come home, in order to lighten your profit-heavy pockets building yourself a grand house. Everything's measured by its distance from your marble-inlaid front door.

Soldiers' maps are different. No soldier needs a world map in any case; it's the next hill that matters, the next river, the woods that might conceal an ambush, the ridge that can be held forever with two good cannons. A soldier makes tactical maps, impermanent, useless after the next day's march. Drawn on old paper scraps, or even on sand; nobody would ever paint one on a wall. There's no center to such maps, bar the place you happen to be at that moment.

Bonus recs:

Graduate Vulcan for Fun and Profit (gen) [Star Trek: Reboot] - Written for the Star Trek Big Bang. I totally want this to be canon! It has so many things I enjoy seeing in my reboot!Kirk - Tarsus IV aftermath, secret academic skillz - meshed perfectly with things I never knew I always wanted, like the crew of the Kelvin as Kirk's honorary aunts/uncles/well-meaning busybodies.

The next day in class Sakel says, "The information in your PADDs requires updating. Please ready for data transfer." He repeats himself in Vulcan.

Jim watches in numb horror as the menu of his PADD suddenly sprouts a second syllabus in Vulcan, and, at guess, thirty texts named things like ORIGINAL SOURCES OF VULCAN CULTURE and THE INTERPLANETARY SOCIETY OF LITERATURE: THE YEAR IN REVIEW and PATHS OF KNOWLEDGE: TERRAN AND VULCAN LOGIC and, naturally, THE DIALECTS OF SURAK, IN THE ORIGINAL FORM. There's also a note, verging on smug, from Sakel, saying that if he's lost any of the material that he's sent him over the years, Sakel can resend to Jim's data account.

He taps open both syllabi and discovers that he is supposed to write "My name is __________. My hobbies are ________, _______, and ________. I joined Starfleet because ___________.When I graduate I hope to be posted at _______________. (EXTRA) My reason for learning Vulcan is _____________." in Simplified Vulcan, and (from the other syllabus) ten pages about the difference between Simplified and Standard Vulcan, and what it means in terms of Vulcan culture, interplanetary politics and relations, and why (Jim mentally translates) Simplified Vulcan is a bunch of horse shit that most Communications people desperately want to light on fire and dance widdershins around, not that Jim blames them. In formal, academic Vulcan.

"He's really dumping it on us," says a tiny girl with antenna next to him. Her voice is slightly hysterical, like she's just jumped in the water and it was about fifty feet deeper than she expected. "The textbook doesn't even start Vulcan letters until three chapters in!"

"Standard transliteration is acceptable," says Sakel, looming up behind them. "If you are unsure of your ability to write in Vulcan characters." A meaningful pause. "For this assignment."

Jim wonders if it's possible to kill a Vulcan with the sheer power of hate in your heart.

Future Legend (Kris Allen/Adam Lambert) [RPF] - Written for [livejournal.com profile] queenbitchfest. POST-APOCALYPTIC DYSTOPIAS, THEY ARE MY FAVORITE. Perhaps because they are so perfectly suited to fulfilling my fic kinks for h/c and for logistics. And this one is especially amazing, with the slow reveal of circumstances (which is why you're not getting a quote).
strina: willow/tara kissing caption "i want my tongue writing poetry on your skin" (w/t - poetry)
Yours (The Earth And All That's In It) - Sheldon/Penny (Leonard/Penny, Sheldon/Leslie Winkler) - The Big Bang Theory.

GUYS. IT IS BBT APOCAFIC WITH TIME TRAVEL AND PINING. IT'S PRACTICALLY DESIGNED TO MAKE ME CAPSLOCK.

Leslie's still in love with Leonard. She has been for over a decade. She told him when they first slept together and she tells him whenever he checks. Sheldon envies her that honesty, that certainty, the way she can just say matter-of-factly I still love Leonard Hofstadter. I probably always will.

"Leslie?"

"Uh?"

"Do you still love -"

She cuts in tiredly, "I still love Leonard Hofstadter, and probably always will."

"Leslie?"

"What?"

He says for the first time, "Can you ask me the same thing?"

She blinks at him in surprise. Glasses off, she looks so vulnerable and young, still. She's pretty, but Sheldon's never felt it.

"Uh," Leslie says. "Do you, are you...uh?"

Sheldon bites his lip. Disturbs the universe. Dares.

"I still love Penny Hofstadter," he says, "And probably always will."

But also: 72 Days and Counting - Miranda/Andy - The Devil Wears Prada. Also time travel - well, time loops - and ALSO amazing. Miranda is a stone-cold badass, guys, of course she can foil 18 kinds of shenanigans in one morning, especially if you let her practice up.

Well, at least this was one potential benefit of her very strange Thursday.

Actually, perhaps this was the benefit: Miranda had been very consciously not thinking about the whys and wherefores of her predicament, but mere insanity seemed too simple an explanation and a city-wide conspiracy too unlikely. Perhaps the universe was finally giving her a break, finally allowing her to fix mistakes before they were made instead of constantly running after problems with Band Aids and salve.

Either way, there was no way out but forward.

And also: The Most Dangerous Thing - Harry/Marcone - The Dresden Files. Harry and Marcone are TOTALLY accidentally married, you guys.

ALSO, ALSO: This song is fantastic!

I like this type of moody male vocals anyway (hi, VAST!), but especially when it's in the form of a sad song about a douchebag saying he loves you and sneaking out while you're asleep.

You told me you loved me -
I know where and when.
Come sunrise, surprise, surprise,
The joke's on me again.

...Might be a while. I've got tabs open on 30 fandoms I haven't even touched yet (even though the list is right at 48). So, some faves so far:

I Will Not Sleep (Horatio/Archie) [Horatio Hornblower] - Horatio and Archie are so OTP that it hurts me. Like, the one image that springs to mind when you say "Hornblower" is Horatio desperately cradling Archie's limp body kind of OTP. So A++ for a Kennedy Lives story that's also in the kind of desperately romantic language you'd expect of the time period.

Dragon Hoard (gen) [Hurog novels] - First, EVERYONE SHOULD READ THESE BOOKS. I LOVE THEM. WARD AND OREG ARE SO CODEPENDENT AND AMAZING AND FUCKED-UP ABOUT EACH OTHER AND WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK, THE END OF BOOK ONE, SOMEONE NEEDS TO TALK ABOUT THAT WITH ME*. Like, after I read it, I spent an hour on the phone trying to find any bookstore in 20 miles that had the sequel because I could not wait for Amazon. Um. Anyway, this story is an amazing tag for Dragon Bones, because I wanted healing sex? But this is the next best thing. (But you should totally read the book first, because this would spoil an amazing payoff.)

*ALSO JADE EYES, AT THE END, OMG. THIS NEEDS TO BE A FANDOM, PEOPLE.

Unexpectedly, I read Mythbusters fic now! Back Out is a cute short gen piece and Robots Need Love Too is quite possibly my favorite story of this year's challenge; it is a SPACE AU featuring Jamie Hyneman: Wee Tiny Robot (okay, really just Wishes-He-Was-a-Robot). Super adorable!

KIRK IS A MOM. IT IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED IN ANY STAR TREK FANDOM, EVER. IT CANNOT BE DENIED.

So Wise We Grow, Kirk/Spock, Reboot, 81,000 words of AWESOME.

Pike looks up at him and says, seriously, “I’m hurt, Kirk.”

Jim stops dead. “What’s wrong, sir?”

“I mean, emotionally.”

“Uh, I’m sorry?” Jim replies, not sure what’s going on.

“You should be,” Pike tells him severely. “I know I’m not your father – no one ever could be.”

“That’s true, sir.”

“But I don’t think it’s too much for me to say that I’m the closest thing
to a father that you’ve got in this world.”

Jim gives that some thought, and says, “I guess that’s probably true, too, sir…”

“And so I’m hurt, I’m really hurt. Bad enough that you didn’t ask me to give you away… but I wasn’t even invited?”

Silence settles, and stretches.

“You bastard,” Jim breathes.

“Especially since I was the one who made this all happen for you,” Pike continues blithely, as if Jim hadn’t said anything. “I have to admit, being an admiral’s not as much fun as I thought it would be – I’m thinking of setting up shop as a matchmaker full-time, since my first set-up was such a success.”

“If you think I won’t hit a man in a wheelchair, you are gravely mistaken,” Jim says seriously.

“I know Spock thought I was crazy, making you his first officer, but I could see even then that you two had chemistry. Granted, I didn’t know it was
this kind of chemistry—”

“I can make it look like an accident,” Jim threatens, “no one will ever know.”

“I’m sure it was a lovely ceremony; I can’t imagine you wore white, of course – that’s stretching the bounds of symbolism pretty far – but your Starfleet uniform is better anyway, it’ll remind you of how you met—”

“Why does everyone think I’m the wife?!” Jim yells, at the end of his rope.

“Do you really want me to answer that, son?” Pike asks, eyes twinkling with a disturbing light.

“I’m the captain,” Jim whines.

“That you are,” Pike agrees, nodding solemnly. “Captain James Tiberius Mrs. Spock.”

“I’m so telling Spock about this,” Jim vows, and Pike nods again, smiling.

Okay, and if you haven't already clicked the hell over there, you would probably appreciate a more...cogent plot summary. The closest I'm going to get without the flailing starting all over again: Spock, for reasons of crazy Vulcan culture, takes in T'Pring's orphaned son. Kirk offers to be platonic co-parent. AND THEN THE AWESOME GOES TO ELEVEN AND THERE'S PINING AND SAREK IS AMAZING AND. Um. Sorry. Go read it?

So, I just recced a ridiculous number of happy-ending bandom fics in [livejournal.com profile] dancinbutterfly's comments, if anyone wants some?

Like, I have been reduced to following her twitter, I'm stalking so hard for updates.

SGA AU, in a world built similar to the one in Xanthe's General & Dr Sheppard 'verse (with permission). Except where parts of G&DS hit my squick in unexpected ways (love the 'verse! HUGE parts of it I have to skip - not even skim, skip), this thing is just pushing my buttons. Extreme masochism that's still safe, sane, and consensual, always! Caning! Promiscuity, kink, and poly are default-viewed in neutral-to-positive ways! Guys, they have KINK COLLEGES; I THINK THAT IS MY FAVORITE PART, HONESTLY (if you couldn't get into/afford a session, you have to take a special basic training course when you join the Marines! I love this worldbuilding so much, y'all).

Ties That Bind (John/Rodney, past Rodney/Sam, various background pairings of het, slash, femslash, and poly) [Series in Progress, but she's only been posting for a week and it's at 78,300 words already]

Also, as she says on the series index page, she needed a villain and she picked Sam, so FYI (but Sam's awesome in her other fics, so it really isn't just bashing).

I am actually re-reading it right now. For the third time. In a week. NEED MORE ASAP; TOTALLY INFATUATED.

Today, you get a selection of comfort-fic. Not h/c (...necessarily), just the stories that make me comfortable, that I've read so many times, whole sections are indeliby imprinted on my brain.

Lost and Found (gen) [Angel] and Temps Perdu (also gen) [also Angel] - Wesley is very much my favorite for Angel. So much so that I spent half of Seasons 3 & 4 calling the entire rest of the cast (excepting Lilah) sanctimonious bastards and hoping they would die (Wes and Lilah plotting against each other as major players in the battle of Good and Evil while also having hot sex would have been a better show all around). I tell you this so that you know, when I say [livejournal.com profile] elgrey writes the best Wes-fic I have ever seen, it means something. Lost and Found is horrible and perfect; Wes tries something desperate to get Connor back and it goes about as badly as it can for him (warnings for torture and noncon). Temps Perdu veers into AU right before the end of Season 5; Angel and Wesley go through a portal into a hell-dimension to avert an apocalypse. There is some absolutely fantastic stuff about memory, and especially Angel's issues with memory, and also grief and dealing with trauma and the ways people change and basicaly, I love it lots, go read them both, and then every other Buffyverse fic she's ever written; every single one of them has at least one thing that stopped me in my tracks and made me go "yes, that, exactly".

Enigmatic Absurdities (gen) [House/BtVS] - Angel has to be rescued from House. Just, absolutely hilarious and amazing; I've probably read it two dozen times and it still makes me laugh.

Seal Team 13 (gen) [Series in Progress] [BtVS/JAG/Supernatural/The Craft/Jake 2.0/Hackers/Stargate SG-1/Invisible Man/every fandom, ever, I don't even know, it's Tenhawk; his MO is basically "take my fave characters from every show/book/movie, toss 'em together, and make them fight evil"] - The Navy decides it needs someone experienced to help them set up a team to take on the supernatural...and Xander's the only Scoob to pass the security check. ID-FIC, but it is amazing the joy it brings me. LOGISTICS, MY NOT-SO-SECRET WEAKNESS. Also TRAINING and PREPAREDNESS and XANDER. A++, basically.

A Good Man Is Hard to Find (gen) [RPF] - Serial killer fic makes me so happy and I don't understand whyyyyy.

Instructional (gen) [Stargate Atlantis] - Don't underestimate the power of the geek! I don't even care if it's fanon, reading about Rodney breaking men's wills to live is hilarious to me.

Compelled to Play Again (Xander/Anya, Wes/Illyria, Wes/Faith, Dawn/Connor, probably other pairings I'm not remembering) [BtVS] - TIME TRAVEL. FAVORITE CLICHE. REASON FOR THIS POST. There are just so many things I love about this story (LOGISTICS!!). Fighting evil on a giant scale! Evil fighting back in clever ways! Poly! Badass fucking Watchers training up scary fucking Slayers!

A Black Comedy (Various het pairings) [Harry Potter] - Speaking of things I love: Alternate dimensions! Saying a big "FUCK YOU" to the Wizarding government! Sirius is alive! Also, the nundu hunt? Made me laugh so hard I LITERALLY almost peed myself. The whole thing is funny? But that part - the disapparition field, the arm, just, everything - made the whole fic.
