Change Your Body (Transform Your Mind)
And today I share with you fic featuring bodily changes - animals, wings, animagi, kids, genderfuck, that kind of thing.
The Man Who Rose from Earth (and its sequels, Flux and The Rise and Fall) (John/Rodney) [Stargate Atlantis] - Wings. John gets wings. And then gives them to Rodney. People, it is wings as a STD. Awesome!
No Treaty (Harry/Draco) [Harry Potter] - Wings. Draco tries to become a swan animagus (because they're beautiful! and vicious! and can kill a man with their wings!). And no Seeker can resist a boy with wings. Awesome bratty schoolboys.
Defender of the Night (Buffy/Angel, Xander/Buffy) [BtVS] - Species change: Gargoyle. WiP. Xander dressed as the gargoyle Goliath for Halloween. Janus decided it'd be fun to leave him that way. Y'all, I love Mac. He writes Xander-centered fic and doesn't bash the other characters. Plus, there's humor and friendship and epic romance.
Hurog means dragon (Ward/Oreg, Tisala/Ward) [Dragon Blood] - Species change: Dragon. Oreg can't let Ward just die. There are not words. I loved the books and wanted fic desperately and then Yuletide! Yuletide like a gift from the gods! And it's so very in character to me, because Ward is pretty much everything to Oreg.
Rodney McKay - Cat Lady of Atlantis (gen) [Stargate Atlantis] - Species change: Cat. Ronon gets turned into a cat. And then so do Teyla, Zelenka, and Sheppard. And reason 846369 I love Rodney McKay: he totally doesn't get why people are so upset. Being a cat would be awesome.
Hiss Me, Harry (Harry/Draco) [Harry Potter] - Catboi. First, a disclaimer: I love this story utterly. UTTERLY. I kind of want to have its babies. I don't even know. Harry and Ron's attempt at the awesomest Halloween costume ever goes awry. Harry ends up with cat ears and a tail. Draco is intrigued. There's some dubcon and Draco's whole fixation on the cat aspect might squick some, but really, I am infatuated with this fic, I want it to a million words longer. Harry's so awesomely bitter and sulky about the whole thing that it kind of makes my day every time I read it.
Things That Go Meow in the Night (Harry/Draco pre-slash) [Harry Potter] - Animagus. A sort of pre-slash fic about Draco's first night in his animagus form. Best part? CROOKSHANKS. Crookshanks and his depserate attempts to escape the affections of Mrs. Norris.
From the Ruins 1 and 2 (gen) [Smallville] - Bodyswap. I'm...actually not sure if this is supposed to be marked as gen, but it's not really any gayer than canon, so that's what I went with. Getting rid of Zod causes Lex and Clark to switch bodies. This is pretty much my favorite fandom for bodyswap, because of all the new things someone has to learn if they're going to use Clark's body. And I love their reconciliation in this, no hugs and all-is-forgiven, just...empathy.
always should be someone you really love (John/Rodney) [Stargate Atlantis] - Genderswitch. Teyla has a little speech:
“And of course you remember Colonel Sheppard and Doctor McKay. They were previously male, but were altered by one of the Ancestor’s devices.”
At this, the people will nod sagely and mutter about Ancestor technology. “I once found a device that turned me into a toad,” one old woman tells them brightly. “But I got better.”
I freaking love that part. It always makes me think that for every person in Pegasus that worships the Ancestors? There's probably one that likes to bitch about asshole Ancients that don't know to turn their crazy shit off before abandoning it in someone else's backyard.
And Now For Something Completely Different (Harry/Draco, Hermione/Ron) [Harry Potter] - Genderswitch. Harry wakes up a girl. And starts dating Malfoy. Ron is surrounded by lunatics. This story will never stop being funny.
Impossibly Delightful Flesh (Xander/Anya, Willow/Tara, Buffy/Riley, Buffy/Spike) [BtVS] - Genderswitch. So I mostly love genderswitch fic because it makes me giggle. But this actually explores concepts of gender in an interesting and thought-provoking way! What's more, it makes me enjoy Buffy/Spike, which is kind of a leap for me.
be able to stop (Joey/JC) [Popslash] - Genderswitch. JC wakes up a girl. The thing that fucking kills me about this fic is that it says something you really, really don't see often in slash and/or genderswitch: maybe sexuality isn't fluid.
The World Turned Upside Down (Jack/Stephen) [Master and Commander] - Genderswitch. A plague changes the gender of a third of the world's population. The world has to adjust. It's really great to see what might happen with large-scale and irreversible genderswap, especially considering the time period.
You're Pretty Good Looking (For a Girl) (John/Rodney) [Stargate Atlantis] - Genderswitch/bodyswap. Rodney and Cadman have each other's bodies. Possibly for the rest of their lives. I really like that this doesn't go cliche, y'know, a temporary change that we all know will come right in the end.
I Put a Spell on You (Because You're Mine) (Sam/Dean) [Supernatural] - Multiple: Wings, mpreg. Sam can control Dean's body. With his brain. This is the good crack.
Detention with Professor Malfoy (Harry/Draco) [Harry Potter] - Forced aging (temporary). Draco takes an aging potion to prove a point to Harry. I really love the control issues in this.
Interstitial (Clark/Lex) [Smallville] - Clark seems to be outgrowing his powers and also growing up. Love this fic, even if I do feel sorry for Clark. He must dream of a Kryptonian's User Manual or something.
