Good morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

Ways To Give:

Devyn was hit with a series of emergencies and medical bills in the last month, and is fundraising to help pay a large vet bill, her own MRI bill, and multiple urgent-care trips as well as a car repair. You can read more, see some cute kitty pictures, and support the YouCaring here.

[tumblr.com profile] silversouledcat is raising money to stay in college and still be able to feed herself; she depends on her status as a college student for her meds, and on her independence to keep her sanity and distance from her parents. You can read more, find her paypal email, and reblog her post here.

Buy Stuff, Help Out:

[tumblr.com profile] roguewrld linked to a Planned Parenthood fundraiser -- buy a nerdy Klingon shirt and support Planned Parenthood! I...don't actually know what the shirt says but I understand it's a form of play on MAGA. You can read more and buy a shirt here!

Help for Free:

Anon linked to a petition regarding fanfiction.net -- the Malaysian government has blocked FFN due to the "lewd and explicit nature of its erotic stories" and the petition is to unblock the site. If you guys aren't following this story, it's something everyone in fandom should be aware of; it looks to me like a test run before they go up against AO3 next. You can read and sign the petition here.

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can post items for my attention at the Radio Free Monday submissions form. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). If you're new to fundraising, you may want to check out my guide to fundraising here.

I haven't posted anything substantial since February. I suck.

That said, I'm here and reading everyone, I just... haven't had the energy to make sense of my life enough to put it into words. Work is very rewarding and very stressful all at once. And the rest of the time is spent on ... well, roleplaying :) G, my housemate, is still running the Awesome Awesome Exalted Campaign of Amazeballs for me, and I'm tempted to start doing weekly recaps of what's happened in the game. (I have no idea whether anyone would want to read it other than me, though.)

So, yeah, not dead. Yay! :)

So... as those of you who follow me on Twitter know, I accidentally adopted a new cat last weekend. Oops?

Long story short: one of my coworkers has a teenage son who's in college. Said son adopted a cat back in the spring, decided over summer vacation that she was too much work, and left her with his parents when he went back to school. His mom is severely allergic to cats. They tried keeping her for a few weeks, but my coworker's wife ended up in the emergency room unable to breathe because of it, so the cat ended up with me somewhat unexpectedly.

(I'd volunteered to take her, on the condition that WWIII didn't break out in my apartment when I tried introducing a third cat to the mix, but it was something that was tentative and wasn't planned for at least several more weeks. Then I got a phone call last Saturday night asking if my coworker could come by the next morning.)

Anyway...

Everyone, meet Keyleth (also known as Kiki.)

Garrus and Percy have been fine with her from the beginning. They've definitely been more curious than anything else. She, on the other hand, has been a little more wary. At this point, she's just starting to get used to being in a new environment with two much-larger-than-her cats around. (Kiki's approximately two years old, but she's tiny. Even smaller than Tali was, which is saying something.)

So far, so good. I left them alone without shutting anyone up in the bedroom for the first time earlier today, while I played D&D over at the game store near my place, and the apartment was still standing when I got home. Kiki's still somewhat wary of Garrus and Percy, but the worst she's done is hiss and go pout under the bed for a little while before coming back out. And neither of them seems to be taking offense to it, so they're just leaving her be for a bit when she gets to that point.

This week included my birthday (and I am still in mid-birthday-weekend-trip) so… less writing. (And I have concluded that I need to let Kinktober go because I’m just picking away for days and days at one day’s story, and missing working on other stuff, so I am pretty decidedly not in The Kinktober Spirit.)

WIPs currently active: 5, since as of this moment I’m not counting the Kinktober thing I was working on.

Words written this week: 1,725

WIPs that got no words this week: 0

WIPs that did get words this week:

Codename: Aluminum Bastard (aka broken dick epic): 142

Born in the Blood: 187, and then I got to a scene break and now I have to figure out the next scene. Oh dear.

Slavefic #6: 176, although I may have to walk back some of it, because it’s possible I got carried away writing things in direct refutation of a frustrating comment on a previous story. Oops.

Wildly Unmanageable Ace!Bitty Longfic: 194

Jack/Bitty angsty happy ending kidfic: 734

Kinktober Day 9 (Sam/Grant, abandoned for now): 292, and finally I have to admit that writing fanfic of an original thing I wrote is crossing some wire in my brain that is making it weirdly difficult to write a PWP?? idek.

Food from Gousto )

The gousto website is here if you want to try them yourself. My code is embedded in there. If you use it you'll get 50% off your first two boxes, and I get a bit of money off my next box too. The cheapest boxes have two meals for two, and will cost about £25, so at half price you'll get four meals for £13. Which is not bad, and honestly the food is Very Lovely.

It looks at first a bit like one of those things where you have to sign up to get food all the time every week - you very much don't. I just get a box now and then, when I can't think of ANYTHING to cook or when there is money in my account. (Delivery is really easy because they come in boxes that stay refrigerated for anywhere up to 24 hours. They just leave mine in the back garden for me for when I get home from work.)

Harvey Weinstein

It's so frustrating watching some of the reactions to the whole Harvey Weinstein thing. Because obviously it's brilliant, and I do think it might make a tiny start to a slow steady change in a fucked up fucked up fucked up industry. But oh god you can just see and watch in real time as it doesn't quite stick and people shy away from it.

People go 'oh wow that man is TERRIBLE' and you wait, and they go '...and if he's terrible, oh god, maybe, you don't think, might, maybe might those other three men be terrible too??????' and you wait, and you get '...oh my god I can't believe it's so many men, like that entire section of men over there is awful, I'm so shocked...' and you wait, and you're hopeful, and you're waiting. 'I've really loved seeing all the wonderful things some guys have been posting on twitter, it really gives me hope...' No. Stop it. Fuck off. They're doing a bare minimum and they probably don't mean it, that's literally the whole point of the story, that men support this whole system, it's dicks all the way down. You can't just hate the three men at the top of a pyramid of terrible men, and then feel like you achieved anything. I know 'feminists don't hate men' sounds all very good and everything, but...

I'm too tired to write this properly. I just don't know why women find it so hard to hate men. Men find it so easy to hate women.

I'm too tired to disclaim.

Pre cleaning person cleaning

I folded and spindled my budget to add a cleaning person for three hours once a month for various physical and mental reasons. Of course, there's some decluttering etc that needs to get done before she gets here in two hours:

* load dishwasher
* declutter kitchen counter
* toss nonfunctional cat feeder
* garbage/recycling off windowsill
* empty cat food cans in recycling

* declutter misc surfaces
* hang up hoodies
* get dressed

Optional:
* clothes on bed to be done while she's here
* wipe down sink (it's a little embarrassing)
* garbage & recycling out
* hit a nearby ATM for tip and laundry money

Totes doable, right?

Well, that was fun!

I got two really lovely gifts. We Could Be Heroes, a Jessica Jones role reversal AU (I effing love role reversal AUs) where Trish is the one with powers, and Jessica is, well, Jessica. And obloquy, a Game of Thrones story where Yara and Ellaria, who were very much hard done by in S7, get the happy ending they deserve, frequenting brothels and scandalising the lords of Westeros. I am a very lucky girl!

And it wasn't written for me, but the Pride and Prejudice Mary/OFC fic The Part of Her Hair is one of those fics that just makes fandom a richer place.

I have been trying to do more exchanges this year, and the results have been, em, hit and miss. My fault, not that of anyone who's written anything for me. This has just not been a year of me doing my best work. That said, I think the fic I wrote for this is a bit good.

I got a request for Root/Shaw fic without any particular prompts, so I decided to write the finale fixit that I'd been meaning to write since last year. The lion's share of post finale Root/Shaw fics seem to go the route of the Machine and Root having faked Root's death in order to goad Harold into action; a fanon I can never get behind because 1) that's stupid, and 2) Root would never, not after what Shaw went through with Samaritan. So I went with the more traditional fixit: that obviously fatal gunshot wasn't nearly as bad as it looked, la la la. Also, I killed Harold, not because I don't like Harold, but because Reese and Finch dying together had been set up since the pilot, and what were they playing at not following through on that?

Schrodinger's Simulation
So, Schrodinger's simulation, it's simple: if Root lives, this is real; if she dies, it isn't.

Or,

Root survives, Shaw is a terrible nurse, and the Machine has some identity issues.

Leaving for Dallas

I'm going to be in the Dallas metro area for my little sister's wedding next week. Leaving Tuesday, and I'll be there until Nov 2. There will be family stuff and wedding stuff and I will be stocking up on things I have trouble buying in Finland like cotton yoga pants and cotton terry-lined socks.

And I'm PRETTY sure I don't know anybody in the Dallas area anymore from fandom, but feel free to contact me here or on Twitter if I've forgotten anyone.

The second trailer worries me a little, but I think it's still possible to roll with it.

Between sickness and impending houseguest I barely scratched the surface of the archive before author reveals, so if you're in the same boat you should totally come slowly catch up read with me post-reveals instead. There is some awesome things in there. I wrote:

Going Easy (1355 words) by shopfront
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Wolf 359 (Radio)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Isabel Lovelace/Renée Minkowski
Characters: Doug Eiffel, Alexander Hilbert, Hera (Wolf 359)
Additional Tags: Sparring, Flirting, Tension, Missing Scene
Summary: Minkowski and Lovelace aren't enemies, exactly. But they're not friends either, and it seems prudent that they find a way to work together better - even if it involves a little bloodshed.

I actually ended up diving into a new fandom post-matching this year, which is unusual for me, and I had a lot of fun catching up on Wolf 359. (Mostly but still not quite caught up on the very, very latest eps, so no spoilers please!) I highly recommend it if anyone has considered trying it. I am not a podcast person, or an audiobook person either. I tend to struggle to focus when listening instead of reading words. But this was engaging enough that I had way, way fewer problems than usual, so for what that's worth - 'tis excellent fun!

I am also off to see Cursed Child today, finally. Happy belated birthday to meeee. Both parts back to back on four hours sleep with flu while dragging along a jetlagged houseguest. So that should be interesting. But I'm so excited!

An Actual Update: Fannish Edition

Sorting out my mood stabilizers gave me back my ability to read for pleasure and it also gave me back my fannishness.

I've been reading a lot of books, but I've also been reading a shitton of fanfic for the first time in years and just loving it.

I tend to multifannishness with periods of intense focus on one specific fandom. For most of the summer that was Les Miserables, which is a great fandom to binge-read, but a highly inconvenient fandom to want more fic for in 2017, as it's not dead, but definitely doesn't attract as many really good authors as it did a couple of years ago.

Les Mis is really actually two fandoms with one name. There's the Valjean/Javert portion of the fandom, and there's the Les Amis d'ABC portion of the fandom.

I've read and loved some Valjean/Javert in the past, but right now I'm ALL about Les Amis.

The thing about Les Amis fandom is this: in canon almost every character dies, but fandom being fandom says "fuck that shit," and instead you can read thousands upon thousands of ways for everybody to live.

Most Les Amis fic is AUs. Modern AUs. High School/College AUs. Dystopic SF AUs. Fantasy AUs. Soulmates. A/B/O Universes. If you can think of it, someone has probably written it.

But there is a common theme to most of it, a story I needed to read over and over this year. It's a story about queer, radical revolutionaries who get to be happy and maybe even win a little. Not all the great fic is overtly political, sometimes they're radicals in different ways, but that radical queerness is always there at heart, and it feeds my soul.

Also, Enjolras/Grantaire is basically radical idealist who's terrible at human emotion meets cynical alcoholic who's feels too much, and it's gold. If you like pairings who start out the story completely incomprehensible to each other and fight a lot on the way to falling in love, this is definitely the fandom for you. I love stories about people who make each other better, and that's very much the case for these two.

I'm working on a Les Mis recs post but it's rather long, and I've got a lot of other things going on right now, so I'm not sure when I'll get it finished.

Just when I was starting to despair of no more Les Mis fic, [twitter.com profile] bonibaru and [twitter.com profile] thatmissp started talking about Shadowhunters and linking to stuff. So I watched one of bonibaru's vids and went, "ooh, pretty, also very, very queer". And then misspamela posted a snippet of a fic she'd written and I read it and said, "okay, I definitely need more of this." And then I discovered that it's on netflix in Canada, and decided I'd give it a shot.

I watched the entire 13-episode first season in 3 days.

As my two enablers warned me, it's not exactly good TV. It's a trashy supernatural teen soap opera, and it embraces that. But I actually love that about it, it has no interest in being subtle and nuanced, and that makes it kind of charming and endearing. It's just so earnest.

Also, very, very queer. It's an ensemble show and within that ensemble the romance that gets the most attention and best development is the queer one, and it fills me with joy.

Magnus Bane is a flamboyant, hedonistic, bisexual and immortal warlock. Alec Lightwood is a young, uptight, closeted supernatural demon-fighter. They meet and Magnus immediately goes, "I want that one," and Alec suddenly completely loses the ability to speak. It's adorable.

And of course there's angst, and Alec is a self-sacrificing idiot a lot, but it's also a surprisingly honest and realistic relationship arc for a supernatural teen soap opera.

Anyway, I've just started season two and I'm enjoying it immensely. It's not the kind of fandom I expect to become passionate about long-term, but right now it's providing a much-needed shot of sparkly queerness in my life.

Look, I can makes posts sometimes that AREN'T either music or book reviews! Who knew?

This summer was filled with reading, multiple trips to a friend's cottage in the Gatineaus, and learning to be dog owners. That last has been particularly exhausting, but we're getting there. And he is a sweetheart.

This is Bogart:
sitting dog

all about Bogart, with more pictures and a cameo from Dreadful )

There is also a new four-footed resident downstairs. Chakra, one of Rayne's cats, died in mid-August and in September I saw this fine gentleman in a pet store and sent his picture to Rayne, who promptly came and met him and fell in love.

This is Ivan Vorcatril:
white cat

Yes, we do call him, Ivan, you idiot )

Which is better than Kina is with the new temporary downstairs resident.

Three years ago we rescued and either rehomed or tnr'd the colony of feral cats who'd been hanging out in our backyard. One of the first kittens Rayne rehomed was Sage:

Sage has returned to us, but she can go home with you! )

In non-pet news, As of yesterday I am taking Concerta for ADHD.

This article was somewhat unnerving to read, because so much of it could apply to me: How I Came To Understand My Adult ADHD".

Especially this part, about how long the writer went undiagnosed:
When I asked how this was possible, my doctor-friend hit the nail on the head without looking up from her menu: “You were performing well, so no one asked you how you felt.”

I'm still figuring out what parts of my non-neurotypical brain are because of being bipolar and what parts are in fact due to ADHD. It's a weird feeling to be re-evaluating this stuff now. I'm 37. I've been diagnosed as bipolar since I was 24. I thought I was done learning new and interesting things about how my brain works.

- Logging into the tax return website always takes me about three times as long as actually filing a tax return. No login they have ever given me works from one year to the next. So now there is this system where instead of entering a password they sent you through the physical post, you have to login with someone else and prove that you are who you think you are by having a passport and knowing things about your credit history, and then eventually that website vouches for you and tells the government to let you pay tax.

- I haven't posted for ages. The apocalyptic weather day was ages ago now, but it was magnificent and I loved it. The colour was like I was literally inside an oil painting, but an oil painting that was anticipating something awful, and the weather itself was properly alien. It was windy but not really touching me. I loved it. It was genuinely like being under a massive dome on mars where they've terraformed and it's indistinguishable from real world earth, but except ENTIRELY DISTINGUISHABLE. I loved how a few hours later it went all sunny and fresh and pretended nothing was even happening.

- I wish Rita didn't roll in poo so very often.

- I didn't mind nothing happening in Mindhunter for a while, for like five episodes? I was fine when I thought it was building to something. But I've got one episode left now, and I'm just confused. There is no real story. When I say 'it's about two fbi agents in the 70s who realise they should study psychopaths to work out how to catch them so they do that', that is ALL IT IS. That's not like the scenario and then there's a plot I'm being secretive about. I'm being secretive about Olivia Dunham being in it, but that is all. I am too old for tv now? [I've been a bit harsh here. It's fine. It's very watchable. I just struggled to find the last episode, and then I was like 'Do I even need to watch it? Is ANYTHING even going to happen?' And then I wrote this. But like it's fine. It's not hopelessly overly self obsessed, and I suppose actually they have solved a couple of crimes and made up the phrase 'serial killer'. Those are things that happened. It's probably brilliant and I'm just soul dead.]

- This isn't a great article about the sad lack of episodic tv, but it's one of the things that I cling to articles about, so I'm just saying it exists.
