The Lists (And an Embarrassing Fangirl Moment)
Went back and unlocked (forward-dated) all the rec lists I've finished so far:
Stories from yuletidetreasure.org
Crossovers
Threesomes fics
Stories featuring Xander
Gen stories
(You'd think five rec sets of 50 would equal 250 stories, but you would be wrong. There are seven stories in there twice somewhere, so it's only 243. But still. I feel I should get a prize of some sort.)
Have another twelve (in varying stages of completion) still locked.
These stories...It's hard to explain the way I feel about them.
I've been reading fanfiction for three years. And that's actually not that long; I've read stories that've been in progress longer than that. But when I fall in love with something, I fall hard. Last year, I went to school from 7:45 to 2:55, came home, and usually spent about nine hours on the computer, reading. Weekends, I spent up to 18 hours at a time on the computer. I have read mindboggling amounts of fanfiction. Excellent, execrable, I've read the range. And god, when it's good...half of the beauty of fanfiction is the feeling behind it.
Sometimes you read professional fiction, and just know that this is the author's job. That they wrote this book for a paycheck.
People don't write fanfiction for anything but love. And it amazes me. I am utterly in awe of everyone who does it, because I can't.
The stories I'm recc'ing, I love them. I love them for different reasons, and with varying intensity, but I love them.
Void is gorgeous and fucked up and full of this kind of joyful destruction (self-, and otherwise) that's completely captivating. Context was my first step down the slippery slope into popslash. Retrograde is everything the canon could be. Reconstruction? The best post-Gift story I have ever read. The Key's Watcher makes me read and believe Giles/Jean-Claude. Slave Bear of Care-a-Lot is so absolutely bizarre that it immediately became the best thing ever to me. Esperanza has sparked me to write poetry, it's so gorgeous.
Alpha Centauri, Daemonology, Clex-in-Discworld, Joli Coeur, Chocolatey Goodness, Instructional. Live-In Skin, Trick or Treat, Objects in Motion, Dirigo, Kitty Kitty, Seal Team 13. Physical Presence, A Pretty War, Theory, Coming Up for Air, Superimpose, Dark Horse.
I've spent three years finding these stories, and others like them. I want to share. I want others to love them the way I do, love them so much that you'll return to them again and again.
So go. Read. Enjoy.
