New Kindle is named Metis, because when I find a naming schema I like, I will run it into the goddamn ground.

24 items into a Derek/Stiles list, because I am just so full of feelings and using other people's rec lists keeps biting me in the ass. There are about ten stories that I hate? But if I see a link I follow it, because I cannot remember I've read them, let alone that I hate them. It is a fandom with a lot of tropes, ok, and sometimes a new story feels familiar because tropes and sometimes a story feels familiar because it is the one you wanted to throw across the room.

But yes, new list, finally. I feel bad that I haven't posted one since fucking March? But getting a Kindle radically changed the way I interact with fandom at large and I was trying to keep reccing without adjusting that at all and it got horrible and frustrating and I just needed to not.

1) Wow, Kei's Gift has way more racism than I remembered - "Prij/Darshian" racism, but really "white people/brown people" racism. Somerville engages with it? But I was not super-comfortable with the "brown people are magically gifted, socially cooperative, and peaceful, while white people are ungifted and superstitious, xenophobic, and warmongering" thing*, especially when several of the more magically gifted characters were described as "childlike". There are only a handful of "good" white people and they are almost uniformly dead or exiled at the end of the book. There were also some unfortunate implications about homosexuality (the only such relationships we see involve at least one and in most cases both/all partner(s) being infertile).**

*I would feel way better about it if there had been more shades of gray, but seriously every bad action by a Darshian is traced back to trauma/bad feelings caused by Prijian warmongering.

**Full disclaimer: by the last third or so, I was skipping entire chapters at a time, SO GLAD I DID NOT PAY FULL PRICE FOR THIS.

2) I feel very ugh today physically and also mentally. I'm dizzy/nauseated/headachey and I don't want to read anything or do anything.

3) I did power through the two easiest lists I had on deck, because I am running out of time: Fix These Words in Your Heart: Astolat and Fix These Words in Your Heart: Lomonaaeren, my 15 favorite fics by each author.

4) I killed like 20 minutes (finger-)combing my hair for the first time in probably a week. I keep it clubbed back basically all of the time so it gets snarled but doesn't look awful - every time I comb or brush I lose hair like crazy. Mane 'n Tail's Detangler is fucking amazing. It detangles and conditions, and the 32 oz bottle from work was only $6.99 (before my discount). The conditioned feeling lasts through a couple shampoos, too. Seriously, it is 7 hours later and I can still run my fingers through my hair. That never fucking happens.

5) I am really enjoying GCB so far, y'all. I don't like Carlene, but I really like how happy Rip and Carlene's marriage is. Also, how much do I love Blake and Cricket's relationship? THIIIIIIIS MUCH. Like, I spent a good chunk of the last episode thinking "does she know?" and "it'd be great if that was just their thing", AND THEN. I was not expecting that kind of storyline and it makes me happy. Also, I want some Amanda/Heather. Also also, I love Cricket's faaaace, the things she can do with her eyes kill me.

6) I don't usually mess with torrents anymore, but I have refound That One SFF Book Torrent. One problem: I don't have a torrent program on this computer. Recs?
strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (Default)
I am toying with doing a couple of single author rec lists because Lomonaaeren, for example, has written 218 stories in less than five years (racking up 3,713,746 words in total, and with 26 stories over 100,000 words), because she is crazy/magic.

At this point I have so many links I have basically no idea what to do with them. I am just listening to the Glee version of Smooth Criminal on repeat and staring at the rtf. Also I resent basically everything about the AO3's bookmark system except for its existence (every time I delete something, it reloads back to the top of the first page).

I finally finished that Watchmen minilist! For reals, it's hovered at seven fics of ten since 2010.

Also the first of my two planned femslash minis.

I think I might do a female-centric gen list? But I wanted to a female-centric list that included the Kanaya/Vriska VENGEANCE fic, so IDK. Doing both seems a bit much.

ETA: Too late! Now there's a female gen list. IDK IDK IDK.

ETA: Possibly someone might want links:

Superman Is Dead, 10 stories
I Loved Her (Sometimes She Loved Me, Too), 30 stories
Her Heart Is Hers, 15 stories
strina: (mal - what i do)
So it is minilist time again and I am still kind of meeeeeh about everything (for example, minilist time should have started two months ago, but I couldn't be bothered to make the challenge post). I just. I miss having the energy to do shit. Also, my links are scattered to hell and gone, between the rtf file and the bookmarks on the version of Opera on the other user account on this computer and the bookmarks on the AO3 and the stuff on the Kindle and the pictures of the To Rec collection on my first (defunct) Kindle and the two abandoned big bangs and that comm I used for a while to sketch out lists and honestly, there was some stuff on delicious that may or may not be there, I haven't yet checked. Also, I don't even remember a bunch of these stories; I've had some of these marked "to rec" for at least three years, because I've been recycling/renaming the rtf that long.

On the other hand, I just updated my personal list masterlist and I'm at 171 lists posted at [community profile] list50 (it turns 6 this year!) and it'd be pretty fucking cool if I could make that 200 in time for January '13, aka, my ten year fandom anniversary. IDK. It's something I love a lot when it's going right, I've just kind of made a mess of it lately.
strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (azkadelia)
Huh. Normally I would be frantically cobbling together lists for another...hour and 37 minutes, but this year I'm not really feeling it. So I guess this is the wrap-up post?

Minilist: Where Would We Be (If I Were Yours) - The BDSM 'verse(s).

Minilist: We'll Be Someday - Jackie/Hyde fic.

Minilist: Nobody Loves You When You're Dead - Zombies.

Minilist: All Roads Lead - Marcus/Esca stories.

Minilist: Cherry - Virgins.

Minilist: Comforts Other Than Love - Gen.

Lists!

I have totally fallen down on reccing, guys! And also my modly duties, but there are only so many times I can fix the same mistake in someone's tagging before I actually start trying to kill her with my mind, or just go crazy and turn off nonmod tagging, whatever.

But! There have been a few lists, and there will be more soon (Jackie/Hyde! Sherlock! My favorite het title ever!).

Minilist: Again/Before - Harry Potter time travel stories.

Sing We Joyous, All Together - Yuletide

Minilist: Combat Baby (Don't Go Quietly) - Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles fic.
strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (Default)
Holy crap, now I'm wondering if people were just waiting for me to get off my ass and open the challenge. Three days in and five minilists posted so far!

I'm currently planning lists for Sorting AUs, time travel in HP fandom, and something with Forging the Sword (Harry's Gryffindor traits were always so much scarier than other peoples'. - possibly my new favorite summary) and Pale Shelter. They are alike? But in ways I cannot properly articulate, other than that they made me stare at the screen going HOLY FUCKING SHIT, WHAT. WHAT WHAT WHAT. Possibly it will end up being a list called "Amazeballs", I don't know. Just, ruthless, brilliant, amazing stories.
strina: text only "got us some crime to be done" (ff - crime)
I posted a new Inception list, A Dream Is a Wish We Can Steal and I am filled with RECCING ENNUI. Like, fandom and you guys and the fic = all still awesome, but I keep escalating the challenges in my [community profile] list50 yearly goals and I kind of don't know where to take it from here? Like, 100 rec lists, 150 rec lists, 5000 stories recced, those were cool milestones, but they're behind me, and if 250 fandoms isn't yet, I'm sure this year's Yuletide list will take care of it. I finished the hooker list that was taunting me for three years. I did the time travel list like I always wanted. For the last few years, I've always had some thing I wanted to accomplish before that all important 3/14 and this year I've got squat.
strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (Default)
I am totally sad that I can't, in good conscience, open up the comm for minilists until November, because I'd only be doing it because I'm bored and have decided to start sketching minilists now so I can maybe get a few more posted this year.

For my reference: )

Other possible lists:

This Is True Love - You Think This Happens Every Day? - # of OTPs.

It's Okay, I'm a Ninja - Naruto list

It's now three Inception lists? I've got bookmarks for five, easy, but no.

What is this fandom, honestly.
strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (villain)
Just did two small fandom lists and while I like Niche Is Neat, I hate the other title. Eck. Am now poking at titles for one-maybe-two Inception lists and a Sherlock BBC, or possibly an all-the-Sherlocks, list. The latter is not going well. I am apparently stuck in the first person? All I've managed to come up with is "I'll Unravel You (Just Give Me the Time)" and "I Can't Read Your Mind (I Don't Have To)".

I HATE settling for a crappy title, because then it'll just irritate me every time I see it on a masterlist, instead of making me happy, like "Memory Is Organic (It Breaks Down)" or "Nobody Wants the Space Clap".
strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (illyria - dangerous)
This Girl Is Taking Bets and I Get My Kicks Above the Waistline, Sunshine, female characters and gen, respectively. Admittedly, they were thrown together pretty quickly and the titles are literally the first semi-appropraite things I thought of, but hey! That is 100 stories down, only...436 to go.

Um. I'ma go work on that?

(Also, I am totally digging the random icon thing!)
strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (tbbt - nerdmigos)
Arthur/Eames list, Inception, for the twelve of you who've managed to escape the fandom explosion.

I'm not even superfannish about it! But there's a shit-ton of really good fic being produced very very quickly? And before I knew it I had 42 links and 36 of them were Arthur/Eames and at that point it's easier to just go with it than to try to spread them out?
strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (gk - warrior spirit)
I open up wordpad to work on posting those lists...and end up making a masterlist of [community profile] list50's lists by theme. It does seem like it'll come in handy? There are several things where I went, WAIT, I only did three of those? Really? I keep forgetting 2007 was basically a lost year.

I was kind of surprised that I've done two death lists, though.
strina: (ff - heroics)
I've got four lists sketched out (as in, I just need to put the stories in some kind of order, add warnings, and come up with titles) and they should be going up on [community profile] list50 in the next few days. Gen list, prompts list, small fandoms list, and a fem-centric list.

Couldn't figure out a place to put this, so: Storytelling (Zoe/Wash) [Firefly]. Awesome transfic.
strina: melissa auf der maur looking arch caption "my heart lies to you" (madm - heart lies)
I am doing that thing again where I struggle with my definition of "small fandom". Because if you've ever seen one of my small fandom rec lists, you'll have seen not-actually-small fandoms on there, because for me small isn't defined by general popularity as much as it is by my own frequency of reccing (I would probably put a Due South story on a small fandoms list, for ex, because it's a big fandom, but it's not a big fandom for me - there was that one fling that can mostly be laid at TFV's doorstep and that was mostly it).

But a), I seem to default to doing small fandom lists and at this point I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to stop putting things like Hikaru no Go fic on them, because, uh, HnG fic on every sf list means a lot of HnG fic and therefore, no longer a small fandom; b) what I rec does not always equate to what I've read, especially in fandoms I've been in since before I started [community profile] list50 in '06. So I think of SG-1 as one of my bigger fandoms, because it's a long-standing, significant fandom to me (as in, I was watching SG-1 pre-SGA and that was what led to me watching the very beginning of the spinoff and also getting to see the first, stumbling steps of Atlantis fandom, back when it basically consisted of 6 stories on Area 52, 5 of which were Sheppard/Ford)...but I have not actually recced it much, because of time/forgetfulness/lost bookmarks. So it might be a small fandom? But it won't go on a small fandom list.

Anyway, it mostly boils down to, White Collar is probably not one of my small fandoms, Leverage maybe is, Marvel comics squeaks through for now, and Generation Kill does not.

POSSIBLY I WILL JUST PROCRASTINATE UNTIL SUNDAY AND THEN HIT Y'ALL WITH MANY LISTS OF MANY THINGS ALL AT ONCE.

THERE ARE SIXTEEN FOLDERS OF BOOKMARKS THAT I HAVEN'T EVEN TOUCHED YET. I AM MOST OF THE WAY THROUGH FOLDER NUMBER FIVE. FUUUUUUUUUCK. ETA: AND THESE FOLDERS ARE JUST THE STORIES I'VE READ SINCE MARCH. YEAH. DOOOOOMED.

HERE, HAVE SOME STORIES. I AM APPARENTLY GOING TO BE SLOGGING THROUGH BOOKMARKS UNTIL I DIE. )

ADMITTEDLY, ABOUT 120 OF THOSE ARE PRE-EXISTING LINKS THAT'VE BEEN CHLLING IN THIS DOCUMENT FOR MONTHS. BUT MOSTLY, THE LAST COUPLE DAYS. HOW ABOUT, NEXT TIME I DON'T POST A LIST FOR A WHILE, SOMEBODY PUNCHES ME THROUGH THE INTERNET, BECAUSE IT ALWAYS ENDS LIKE THIS. I AM FLASHING BACK TO THAT TIME WITH THE SIMULTANEOUS CODING OF 450 STORIES, OKAY (FUCK YOU IN PERPETUITY, 2007).

NERO WOLFE? I DON'T EVEN. WHAT.

1. I LOVE THE BDSM 'VERSE. EVERY VERSION, FOR ALWAYS. WHERE IS THE MASTERLIST FOR THIS AWESOMENESS? MY VERY SOUL CRIES OUT FOR IT.

The BDSM 'verse, for those of you going WTF?, was originally created by Xanthe in The General and Dr. Sheppard (which I have some personal issues with), Coming Home (parts of which I ADORE, parts of which I have to scroll past very quickly, again because of personal stuff), and Hiding in Plain Sight (LOVE IT IN A VERY ID, VERY UNASHAMED WAY). In the 'verse, (nearly) everyone is bisexual and kinky as fuck, as in, they openly identify as dom or sub. There are heterosexuals, switches, and nondynamics, but they are very much in the minority. IT IS A SHARED 'VERSE, and gave rise Keira Marcos's Ties That Bind, aka, my very favoritest SGA fic AND one of my very favoritest kink fics (KINK COLLEGES! MID-SCENE HEALTH CHECKS! MAJOR CHARACTERS INVOLVED IN HET, FEMSLASH, SLASH, AND POLY, AND EVERY TYPE OF RELATIONSHIP IS TREATED EQUALLY RESPECTFULLY! OH, MY HEART! ♥♥♥). Keira's 'verse is slightly different, but it's on the same family tree, okay? Well, there are a lot of OTHER stories on that tree (the one where Rodney's a hooker! I LOVE THAT ONE) and every time I see one, I get very excited (I just found an ANGSTY NCIS ONE; HOPES ARE HIGH, Y'ALL).

Anyway, A++, DO RECOMMEND.

2. I am looking forward to August in perhaps an inappropriate way, because I have decided to make a tradition of last year's "amnesty month", aka, "fuck it, LINK DUMP TIME". (I am so close to actually making a post called Fuck It and filling it with 312 links, you guys don't even know, I DON'T EVEN REMEMBER *BEING* IN PRIMEVAL FANDOM AND YET HERE I AM, CODING LINKS FOR LIKE FOUR DIFFERENT PAIRINGS. Also making me flail in confusion: fairy tales, Jurassic Park, Liar Game, and Labyrinth (I HAVE NOT EVEN SEEN THAT SINCE I WAS SIX, WHY WAS I READING FIC?). I am like that telenovela-ish Bing commercial: "LOS LIIINKS!").

AUGUST: WHERE THE ONLY THEME IS "GET IT THE FUCK OFF MY COMPUTER".

3. I am having Big Bang Regrets, where I want to finish because yay for complements and a wider audience (progress, btw, is now at JESUS CHRIST IT'S A LION GET IN THE CAR!), yet I also don't want to finish? Because some of my favorite stories about ladies are a guy's POV on a lady/group of ladies, or het fics that are only 50-65% About the Lady (like, I am wavering about the Compelled 'verse, y'know, the "Illyria is awesome and decides to take over the multiverse" story, because the main POVs are Illyria, Buffy, and Wesley, and what if that's Too Much Dude?, even though it's a story primarily about women kicking ass?), and those are apparently not things I should be reccing for this? Basically, the rules of the challenge are kind of making me feel like some Bechdel fic does, like artificially erasing an entire gender from the conversation isn't any more awesome just because this time it's happening to the half with penises. I mean, lady-centric fic, YAY, but "lady in the spotlight" doesn't have to mean men are entirely absent from the stage. IDK, it's one of those things where it's a lot easier to strike that 75& balance writing than it is reccing, and also a lot easier if you do more femslash/gen and less het/threesomes, but I am reccing, and I do want to rec gen and femslash and het and threesomes*, and so I am cranky.

*Secret goal: more fem-centric poly always.
strina: demi lovato caption "rocking out now" (demi - rocking out)
The crossovers list I didn't really know I was working on! AKA, "Take Only What You Can Carry: Even More Treks Through the Multiverse".

Containing gen (really quite a lot of gen, this time - WEIRD), het, slash, femslash, threesomes, UST, human/nonorganic and nonorganic/nonorganic, character death, apocalypses, time travel, and, of course, crossovers and fusions, some of which are so perfectly and completely meant-to-be that they may leave you OTP'ing ENTIRE FANDOMS (for the record, "Macdonald Hall/St Trinian's" is my OTP, while my two OT3s are "Leverage/The Losers/The A-Team" and "Iron Man/Transformers/Top Gear").

Also, I very much desire a sequel to The Fires in Their Eyes where Dean Winchester, Neal Caffrey, and Kate Moreau ACTUALFAX HAVE THAT THREESOME (sadly, children, the story stops at the AWESOME SHENANIGANS/KISSING/FRIENDSHIP stage* - I heart that stage, truly I do, but as this is pre-series for both 'verses, my brain just keeps appending "AND THEN IT ALL GOES WRONG FOR EVERYONE" and it makes me sad).

*As the story is marked gen, I don't feel this is spoiler territory.

I AM NOT COMING BACK UNTIL I HAVE CODED THIS MESS.

...POSSIBLY YOU WILL NEVER SEE ME AGAIN?

KNOW THAT I LOVED YOU TRULY, FANDOM!
strina: (txt - triple nerd score)
I have been trying to close out enough tabs that I can start making a dent in the massive folder of bookmarks-that-need-coded-for-recs and I just can't. Twice I've saved my browsing session (I love that Opera lets you do that, btw) and closed all my tabs and then just checked my rlist real quick...and ended up with 30 - 50 more tabs.

Like, right now, I'm apparently reading in The Sentinel, Leverage, The Magnificent Seven, Stargate SG-1, NUMB3RS, Stargate Atlantis, House MD, Jonas/bandom RPF (Kevin Jonas/Mike Carden, aka, The Pairing That Skoosie Built), Sports Night, The Dead Zone, and various crossovers.

Last session was Transformers, Star Trek: Reboot, White Collar, AI RPF, BtVS, Marvel comics, Generation Kill, The Vampire Diaries, Ocean's 11, and various crossovers. Before that was Transformers, Star Trek: Reboot, Fullmetal Alchemist, The Losers, Glee, Harry Potter, Criminal Minds, NCIS, Sherlock Holmes, Supernatural, The Big Bang Theory, and various crossovers.

MADNESS. I keep closing out tabs before I'm done with a fandom! I'm going to have to go back to all of them, because Roy/amnesiac!Ed! Rusty Ryan, missing and presumed dead! Psychic Jim Kirk! Sam Witwicky turns into a 'bot and it doesn't look horrible! MASSIVE CRIMINAL MINDS H/C IDFIC WITH PSYCHIC!ENSLAVED!REID! (That last doesn't even have to be good for me to enjoy it.)

ANYWAY. When I finally get to coding, I will apparently be spamming the hell out of [community profile] list50 with Trek and small fandoms and prompt lists.

Oh! Relatedly: Recent happenings sent me looking through my/[community profile] list50's prompt tables for anything that might be an issue. I came up with six prompts that might be problematic. First, I made the tables, so these things obviously aren't a problem for me, but that's not the point, is it; I'd really appreciate it if someone else would go through and see if they come up with a smaller/larger list of anything that might be troublesome in regards to culture/identity. Second, I am kind of undecided what to do. Prompt tables are optional to begin with, and even if you use a table, it's explicitly stated in the rules that a reccer can choose their own prompts (50 from the pool of 399); it's very easy to avoid using anything you're not comfortable with. So I guess I'm looking more for a "if someone else used that prompt, would you find it offensive" kind of thing?

Also, I've been wanting to do a new challenge at the comm and fandom's bingo madness has made me think that letting people sign up for prompt bingo cards sounds like AWESOME FUN TIMES. There would be veto options (SPECIAL "GEN PROMPTS ONLY" CARDS, GUYS...or the sadder "no poetry or lyric prompts" card) and tiny random rec lists and POSSIBLY the hilarity of someone else getting stuck trying to find a story for "Agape"!
