Alive!
I am finally victorious. There was thing (the file has been fondly titled "Oh God, Worst Idea Ever, No More Projects Conceived at Midnight, Aaaaah" since goddamn February) that was meant to get me over a little attack of fannish ennui and then it wouldn't end and eventually, I decided some motivation was in order - no posting 'till it was done.
Anyway. Life has recently taken a turn for the better; I've moved home, I've got the car back, I've probably got a job. I'm tentatively optimistic.
I'm slightly bewildered by the way my family's become some kind of bizarro redneck soap opera. My brother's girfriend turned out to be the daughter of my mom's second husband - her secret, common-law husband. My cousin Jesse, 22 and already divorced once, secretly entered into a marriage for benefits with a soldier the day before her older sister's wedding and still has told no one but her mother, my brother, and me. My pseudo-stepsister is dating the guy locally infamous for miraculously recovering from having his plug pulled while he languished in an oxycotin overdose-induced coma right after graduation. My life seems very boring in comparison.
So, I do this thing, where once I get a handle on things, I have to make them harder/more elaborate to keep them interesting. So I took all eight
list50 tables, put the prompts on little slips of paper, and drew them out of a hat. Basically. Really, it was a box. But I ended up with seven tables of fifty-five, plus a remix table, which left me to find 400 fics fit to rec. I cannibalised a couple of partial tables and got off to a promising start. And then it all went wrong. Turns out, if the tables are random, you need a little more wiggle-room than just five spare prompts. I have spent the last two months lacking one story.
About three months in, I think, I gave in and started on mark 2 of the bitch, which got the newly minted table nine added to the mix, and I ended up with 67 prompts a table for seven tables, plus a remix table that's gotten totally out of hand. Tables 1 through 7? 30 to 40 stories on each. Table 8? 89 stories and fucking counting. Screw it, though. With those numbers, a story's going to have to be fucking awesome to make the cut and the rest'll go the next poorly conceived project.
Anyway. I'm totally in love with some of the new prompts: Cheat, Resurrected, Outed, Morning After, In the Night, This Body, Spaceman, Rumor, Use Your Words, Not Only Human, Another World, Walking Wounded, Touch Myself. They're so handy. Plus, it took so damn long to finish that I fandom-hopped quite a bit. Which I like, although it's more apparent in the later lists. I something like doubled the amount of Smallville I've recced. Probably more than that for RPF.
Initial goal: 400 stories. Actual result: 768+ stories.
Initial goal: 4-6 months. Actual result: nearly 10 months.
Now that the hardest part (probably) is over, I'm pretty happy with it, but damn, was it not what I expected.
Enough about that, though. I have a home 'net connection now, so I'll be more present than I have been for the last year or so. Also, I have cable again and have fallen in love with several shows. So if anyone has or knows of some good recs/stories for Torchwood, Psych, and/or Eureka, I would deeply appreciate links. And if there's any Psych/Eureka fic out there, it'd pretty much be joy beyond textual rendition.
Oh, and my only email now is beautiful_strina @ yahoo; the MSN account's closed.
