Oct. 29th, 2005 09:26 pmI've had this journal for, jesus, more than a year and a half and I've never posted in it before.
I suck.
If I ran this like I did my freeopendiary (which I had way back in the day...the day of 2001), this post'd be a whole big introduction to me and my life thus far, but since the only people who care are pretty much caught up, let's skip it, shall we?
And, since I tend to blather on, I'm sure future entries will be filled with the minutiae of my life.
I love that word, minutiae. I almost never get to use it. I'm currently dealing with the nagging fear that my vocabulary is shrinking from lack of use. The intellectual level of my conversation has gone right down since Alyssa became infatuated with her latest jackass. Also, I no longer have anyone to play word-games with.
I miss word-games. 'Cause I'm a dork like that. And also, I like to win things.
Know what I realized? I have absolutely no idea what's common knowledge and not. And that keeps smacking me in the face at the weirdest times. First there was that whole stick-and-carrot thing (AP class! they totally should have gotten it!) and then (more recently) I was reading some post about SGA and the poster (I read far too much that is SGA-related and thus couldn't for the *life* of me tell you who it was) mentioned that they had to look up the Androcles and the lion reference, which I thought was common knowledge.
And then I was telling some people from my philosophy class (just a couple weeks ago) that they should totally go see Serenity and I was all, spaceships! cannibals! government conspiracies!, because that movie forces me to break into exclamation instead of talking like a normal person. One of the guys asked if I was into conspiracies, and I replied with "Well, I'm not The Lone Gunmen or anything, but on occasion, yeah." And then I found out that (even after I told them it's from The X-Files) none of them got the reference. They had their own spin-off! Which is available on DVD! It was perfectly valid! But no.
Christ, but I'm a dork.
