Happy Birthday, Oklahoma!
Nov. 16th, 2007 06:47 pmOh, Oklahoma. I complain about you a lot - a lot, what with the Bible Belt and all its baggage. But really, I love you, sometimes even unironically.
You're a fucking awesome place to grow up, with the low cost of living and the abundance of space. You're gorgeous and unpolluted (wind power's big). Also, I got to reenact the Land Run in elementary and it remains one of the five best things I ever did in school (cheating meant you were being historically accurate! kids sabotaged wagons! claims were jumped! BEST project ever).
It's kind of hilarious how much state history courses are hated because of the names you have to learn. Plus, our state song is ridiculous (note: totally not how I learned it; it's second verse only, ending with "You're doin' fine, Oklahoma! Oklahoma--O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A, Oklahoma! Yeah.").
But Oklahoma is full of some of the kindest, most courteous people in the country and maintains some of what is best about "small town" life even in its biggest city. Also, the tornado thing is exaggerated. 20 years here and never closer than the other side of Chickasha, so, like 15 miles.
Anyway: Yay, Oklahoma.
