Giving Fandom the Bird As You Walk Away
Apr. 19th, 2009 07:27 pmI thought about locking this, but it's a Bill Burr kind of day.
I do not grok leaving fandom; I honestly cannot imagine the circumstance where I would. But if it stops being fun for you, if it's making life harder, if it doesn't fit the person you are or want to be? Sorry to see you go. Someone's going to miss you.
But don't fucking delete your fic when you go. Honestly, what the hell is that? You can't "unpublish" actual books and it drives me crazy that people try it with internet fiction.
Two reasons: 1) It's mean. Taking your toys and going home to sulk is what a five year old does. Except in a very few circumstances (you've been sent a C&D, your fic has been connected to your RL identity), it does you no harm to leave it up. "But I don't want people whining for more!" Then turn off commenting and take down your contact info.
2) It doesn't work. Hi, are you familiar with the Internet? Nothing is ever really gone, just really hard to find. It's at archive.org and/or a dozen to a hundred people have it saved to file. People are going to be trading copies; they're just going to be irritated at you while doing it.
And actually, 3) That honestly makes it seem like you're trying to pretend it never happened, like fandom was some horrible aberration you never want to think of again, and I find that offensive.
Note: This was set off by a specific person because she's the one I've been thinking about all day at work (hoping I could get home in time to back her stuff up - no, I couldn't), but it addresses a trend that includes several people I've known.
Note 2: This is as good a place as any to say it: I have backup files of every fic I rec and yeah, I will share them if asked.
