strina: melissa auf der maur looking arch caption "my heart lies to you" (madm - heart lies)
So, my heart belongs to Dreamwidth! But I do the bulk of my reading on LJ, still, and I would like to change that; hence my mad subscribing spree this week. In case anyone was wondering.

IT IS FINALLY THE 26TH. So I posted two lists: Intersections, 50 of my favorite crossovers (heavily weighted toward BtVS-xovers, because Twisting the Hellmouth is my FAVORITE, but also crazy-ass stuff like Alias/The OC), and What It Feels Like for a Girl, 50 genderswap/sexswap stories in 18 fandoms.

And, because I am seeing it everywhere: What kind of topics/entries would you like to see me posting about? Any particular questions you've always wanted to ask me but have resisted because the answer would be a huge essay? Ever want to wind me up and watch me go on a particular topic? Anything you've heard me say "I should write that entry about $foo I've been meaning to write" and have been patiently waiting for?
strina: willow/tara kissing caption "i want my tongue writing poetry on your skin" (w/t - poetry)
I am 28 stories into that Distaff list I meant to finish two weeks ago, so of course I felt the need to do this instead. As a sidenote, I HEART THE GINGER SNAPS TRILOGY, OMG, THAT SHOULD TOTALLY HAVE A BIGGER FANDOM. BADASS LADIES! WEREWOLVES! FEMSLASH & FEMCEST SUBTEXT! THEY MADE THEIR OWN HISTORICAL AU, WHAT.

Anyway.

Name your 15 absolutely favorite couples (het/slash/canon/fanon) and ask people to see what trends they notice about your couples. Try to pick different fandoms.

01. Maggie/Bianca (All My Children)
02. Willow/Tara (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
03. Brian/Michael (Queer As Folk)
04. Ryan/Brendon/Spencer/Jon (Bandom)
05. Kirk/Spock (Star Trek: Reboot)
06. Harry/Hermione (Harry Potter)
07. Sookie/Eric (Southern Vampire Mysteries/Sookie Stackhouse Series/True Blood/whatever you want to call it)
08. Wes/Lilah (Angel)
09. Clark/Lex (Smallville)
10. Xander/Buffy/Faith (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
11. Van/Deaq (Fastlane)
12. Harry/Marcone (The Dresden Files)
13. Brad/Nate (Generation Kill)
14. Steve/Tony (Marvel Comics)
15. Tony/Gibbs (NCIS)

The problem with LJ: we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other. So ask me something you want to know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away. Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you.

Also: as of 4:30 pm tomorrow, I am on vacation! So, um, I will possibly be spamming the hell out of y'all for a week. Sorry?

And HEY, HEY, GUESS WHAT STARTED POSTING TODAY? [livejournal.com profile] polybigbang! In its honor, have a threesome-y song: B For Brontosaurus - Who Will Sail My Ship Ashore?.

(!!!!

While trying - in vain - to find lyrics for the above song, I stumbled onto the music blog I originally cadged it from. Am v. excited, because I loved it, but lost the link back in '06.)
strina: comic panel caption "sweet! let's go, buddy! time to get our nerd on!" (comics - nerd on)
And for today's entry, I did the voice post meme. Sadly, DW has no voiceposting (that I found?), so it's over here at LJ.
strina: stock icon of cherries against a green background - default icon (books - stacked)
Fifteen books you've read that will always stick with you. First fifteen you can recall in no more than 15 minutes.

1. The Iron Dragon's Daughter (NOT FOR ANYTHING GOOD. JUST SEEING THE COVER FILLS ME WITH RAGE AND BETRAYAL.)
2. Great Uncle Dracula (The first chapter book I ever read by myself, in a single day. I was very excited! Also, the monster thing was very cool when I was seven.)
3. Tatterhood and Other Tales (I really cannot express how much this influenced me. I never had that "oh, girls can be heroes, too" epiphany because I grew up reading this and already knowing it.)
4. The Vintage Book of Contemporary World Poetry (80% of my favorite poetry is in this book. The Middle Eastern poetry is especially amazing, and I never would have read any of it without this book.)
5. Covenants (Favorite book! No, you don't understand: I spent most of my life unable to pick a favorite and then there was this, and I've bought five separate copies, and I just am completely infatuated with stubborn, powerful, in-denial Rabbit and the scary-ass men who love him (and can read his mind! also, he keeps ending up naked!). SUIDENNNN, ILU SO MUCH.)
6. Small Gods (Terry Pratchett + religion = A++)
7. Gaea Trilogy (Mostly memorable for the massive "dude, you are fucked up" reaction. But it was also my first experience with homosexuality in fiction.)
8. God Stalk (One of my formative sci-fi novels; I read it at about 12? Awesome mindfuck of a novel - the heroine has amnesia, so you're figuring out her identity with her, based on scattered recollections and the tangled hearsay of Kencyr mythology. Plus, dirty/kinky/wrong het-ship I love.)
9. Grasp the Stars (Remains the most successful "squishy" science fiction I've ever read; human society has undergone a drastic but believable evolution, the aliens are genuinely alien (and WE are genuinely alien to them, which is much less often the case), and the SHIPPING. There's for-real poly and I have an actual chart of who I would like to hook up and how. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.)
10. A Tremor in the Bitter Earth (The TIELMARAN CHRONICLES. I remain totally sad that they have no fandom. There is noncon soul-binding and UST all over the place and kickass ladies and stoic heroes and it is AMAZING.)
11. Enchanted (HURTS SO GOOD. Okay, so this is totally the purest example of my h/c beginnings: the heroine is known - in two countries! - as Ariane the Betrayed, forchrissakes.)
12. Eight Cousins (I had a whole "classics" phase and this is hands down my fave of the time; yes, over Little Women, Five Children and It, The Secret Garden, all those.)
13. Ritual of Proof (Mostly proof that certain romance tropes are totes creepy regardless of gender roles; also, will forever be remembered as "the one with the man-hymen".)
14. Winds of Fate (I way overidentified with Elspeth.)
15. My dad's college lit textbook - introduced me to Shakespeare and AE Housman and Robert Frost and I ADORED IT.

Pick a fandom, any fandom I have EVER BEEN IN (or even a fandom I haven't been in - chances are I know something about it by way of fannish osmosis and the less I actually know, the more definite my opinions are likely to be!). I will tell you:

1. My One True Pairing-Whatever Ship:
2. Canon Ship:
3. "If this happens I'll stab my eyes out with a spork" Ship:
4. "You are one sick puppy" Ship:
5. "I dabble a little" Ship:
6. "It's like a car crash" Ship:
7. "Tickles my fancy but not sold just yet" Ship:
8. "Makes no canon sense but why the heck not" Ship:
9. "Everyone else loves it but I just don't feel it" Ship:
10. One piece of canon I would change:
11. A "missing scene" I'd love to see:
12. I had no proof, but I always believed that...:
13. Measured most likely, by my superscientific gaydar gun, to be queer:
14. The character who's most like me:
15. The character I think I'd be happiest dating:
16. The character I hate for No Good Reason:
17. The most intensely fannish thing I did while I was into it:
18. A song I associate with that fandom:
19. Character most likely to have a sekrit fandom identity themselves:
20. The perfect ending to the story, whether or not it matches what happened.

So, hey, I apparently forgot to mention it, but that big bang index thing I posted? Is now a comm, [community profile] bigbangindex. There are like 68 challenges, it's insane. And awesome, obvs. Also, [personal profile] yvi posted an awesome ladies list on [community profile] list50; check it out.

And now, icon meme! )

All of a sudden, everything went all...nautical and I was very confused. But! Apparently it is Talk Like a Pirate Day.

I kind of like it. Especially the "Update Captain's Log" bit.

For those of you who belong to/follow [livejournal.com profile] list50, how would you feel about a mini-list challenge? Where for, like, three weeks, members could post lists of 5, 10, or 15 stories instead of 50?

For one, I am at my wit's end trying to get people to do lists. For another, I know there are some themes you just can't find 50 stories for. Like, bodyswap.

Anyway. Because I feel chatty, but have nothing to talk about:

Name a character, and I will tell you in no less than 100 words why I love that character.

As many characters as you like. Really, I am that bored.

ETA: Also, give me themes! Crazy, oddball themes! Because I don't want to do a mini-list on anything I can do a long-list for.

Possible min-lists SO FAR: bodyswap, mpreg, wingfic, gsf

You post a topic, list, category, whatever, in my comments section. (examples: "Five Phrases Batman Will Never Say", or "Five Jobs House Wishes He Had" or "Five Things Dean Will Never, Ever Tell Sam"). Then, in a separate post, I'll post the answers to your Top 5 ideas, according to me. Serious or fun!

I miss somebody right now. I don't watch much TV these days. I own lots of books.
I wear glasses or contact lenses. × I love to play video games. × I've tried marijuana.
I've watched porn movies. × I have been the psycho-ex in a past relationship. × I believe honesty is usually the best policy.
I curse sometimes. I have changed a lot mentally over the last year. × I carry my knife/razor everywhere with me.

  1. books:
People, my mother read to me in the womb; I was never going to be not a bookworm. I just - I love everything about books, the size, the weight, the smell of them, even the way reading a collector's edition leaves my fingers smudged with ink. I love how concrete they are, and I love looking at them as they pile up in every corner of my space, and I love that I can carry one with me anywhere and always.
  2. diana wynne jones:
OMG, Howl's Moving Castle and The Dark Lord of Derkholm. How do you resist such a woman? I can't.
  3. fanfiction:
Fanfiction, OMG, fanfiction. It's fiction that you get for free and you read it and you know someone loves what you love and sometime's their why is your why and sometimes it's not, but that doesn't matter, because you still share a joy and a love and an obsession that's so developed it has its own language. And also, boy/boy = TEH AWESOME.
  4. himym:
(How I Met Your Mother doesn't work as an interest, so, had to go with the acronym.) Liking this show surprised me. And then, episode three, I fell heels-up in love with it. Barney! And Ted! And their ridiculous adventures! And Marshall and Lily! I love them, too! But mostly, I love Barney, because he's my favorite soulless little man-whore EVER.
  5. linguistics:
I love words. I love words, and I love knowing things like the dirty, dirty origin of "hunky-dory" (sailors and Japanese whores, yo).
  6. mercedes lackey:
I like classic Mercedes Lackey, mostly. The Mage Winds trilogy was the first Lackey I ever read, and then I devoured the other Valdemar books (except the Vanyel books, which I didn't read until two years and omg, what did he ever do to YOU?), and then I read her urban fantasy, and you know what? Sometimes this woman absolutely rocks.
  7. poetry:
I write it. I love reading it. I once got drunk off of reading Ginsberg. I hate Emily Dickinson, enjoy Shakespeare more as a poet than a playwright, have been ridiculously in love with AE Housman since the first time I read "Terence, this is stupid stuff" in one of my parents' old college lit textbook. I think a lot of modern American poetry is graceless. McClatchy's The Vintage Book of Contemporary World Poetry is one of my favorite five books of all time.
  8. scrubs:
I didn't twig to this show until several seasons in, but I love it. I love it for being quirky and over the top and, sometimes, surprisingly heartfelt. I love JD's narration and fantasy sequences and I love basically every character on the show, which is a rare, rare thing. Also, the fanfiction is nice. What there is of it.
  9. tanya huff:
I love Tanya Huff as much for her writing as for the stories she tells. I want to just sink into it. Also, the spinoff series about Tony from the Vicki Nelson books? About twice as good as its progenitor series and I <3 it.
  10. wislawa szymborska:
Oh my GOD. "Reality Demands", and "Under a Certain Little Star", and "Theater Impressions", and "The Women of Rubens", and I love her.
