Look Upon Them And Despair!
Oct. 17th, 2009 09:22 pmAt this point, I would PAY someone to organize these files for me. Imagine the sheer amount of stuff accumulated over the roughly five years I have been saving and hoarding basically every fic I have ever read/wanted to read/saw and thought "hey, maybe I'll be in that fandom someday, and when I am, won't I be pissed if I don't have anything to read?" (my SOP is apparently to assume fandom as a whole may someday trundle off to the Undying Lands or some shit and leave me behind with only my archives to fall back on? IDK, early in my fannish development there was about a month where every site/author I loved most disappeared from the face of the internet; I have TRAUMA, okay), plus all the blog posts and rec lists and episode reviews and primers and fannish etcetera. Those 4000-mumblety fics I've recced? DROP IN THE BUCKET.
Then remember that this hoarding has been spread over three computers (not counting new-computer), one external drive, and four memory sticks (when back in the year+ of No Internet Access, I had to use a public computer, save everything down that I could, and dump it, sight unseen, onto my desktop at home; repeat near-daily), all haphazardly combined on this one (buggy and increasingly eccentric) machine (which has no functioning search option...yeah).
It all = I could have the best story since the Sacrifices Arc saved somewhere on this thing and never know it. And I'm afraid to delete anything because I know for a fact that several dozen of these stories are no longer available online.
!!!!!!!
Okay, and on another note, it's a little weird for me that Beautiful Garbage has become my favorite of the band's albums, when I owned it for more than a year before I even listened to it all the way through.
Also, HEY, does anybody have any Sentinel recs? Especially Sentinels-are-known AUs, they are like delicious candy that has been rolled in crack. Possibly candy made from tears (most sadistic saltwater taffy ever?), considering how often they are also "horrifying dystopia and/or slave AUs". NEED MORE BLESSED PROTECTOR, PLEASE. Like, I'll read episode-related fic? But I have seen all of an ep and a half (...I had to see the spirit-merge for myself - and shockingly, it was somehow even more homoerotic than you guys had described; basically, I recommend watching just those five minutes, becuase, WOW). But I really love the nuts-and-bolts examination of Sentinels and Guides (hi, LOGISTICS).

Why Can't It Be November Already?
Sep. 27th, 2009 08:39 pmFor one, THANKSGIVING, my favoritest of all holidays (bacon-wrapped sausages! gravy! blackberry wine cake! PINEAPPLE PIE!). Plus, you know, family and togetherness, blah blah blah, board games and card games and sore losers and offensively gloating winners and possibly setting decorations on fire (again).
For two, like 80% of the big bangs with current rounds post October - mid-December, making November a time of GREAT JOY this year, when usually there's fuck-all to read because everyone's churning out their NaNoWriMo project. As follows*:
October 5: Oz bb
October 8: RPF bb
October 12: High School Musical bb
October 22: Poly bb
October 28: Star Trek bb
November 1: Firefly bb AND NCIS bb
November 4: Leverage bb
November 12: Stargate Atlantis bb
November 23: Kink bb
November 26: Smallville crossovers bb
Mystery date in November: Small fandom bb (original, not the new one)
December 1: Sci-fi bb
December 12: Crossovers bb
*These are just the ones I'm interested in; there are like three more posting that I don't plan to read.
PS, I'm re-reading the Cap/Iron Man bb and I can't remember if I've read half of these. Conjugate was the one where everybody swapped powers, An Ever-Fixed Mark was the AWESOME genderswap, Exactly Under the Star was the space AU, Sometimes You Can’t Make It was the uneven but not bad kink fic, Sea Stars was the amnesia one, This Time Tomorrow was the time-travel (FAVORITE CLICHE, HOW NICE TO SEE YOU AGAIN), but I am totally blanking the other four.
A Matter of Extremes: Steve and Tony have issues, and things between them get a little... rough; also, Ultron intervenes, as it's wont to do, and only complicates things further.
In a Different Light: After an unexpected attack, Tony has trouble dealing with his injuries and Steve has trouble dealing with Tony.
To Extremes: Tony gets sick. Tony stays sick. Steve takes care of him
What Tomorrow May Bring: Months after his return back to life, Captain America and Iron Man are kind of estranged, but problems with SHIELD and Tony's life in general get them to work together and fall in love. <333
IT IS BASICALLY AN ENTIRE BIG BANG OF HURT/COMFORT, Y'ALL. THAT'S KIND OF GREAT. (It's not in the rules or anything! It Just happened!)
I'm pretty impressed at their turnout, considering Twilight is probably a much bigger fandom, but their bang only has three completed entries. Also, I was totally spoiled by coming into this fandom via
elspethdixon and immediately diving into her amazing and hurty and wonderful Resurrection-verse (co-written with
seanchai). Whenever I'm in the mood for Avengers fic, I basically just end up re-reading their Resurrection-verse, their Classic-verse, their Roughest Day duo, their mindfuck story King of Infinite Space, and then maybe someone else's stuff (usually A Meeting of Minds and This Time Tomorrow, actually).
ETA: In a Different Light is the one with the (temp) blindness; A Matter of Extremes is the old!Bucky/Steve dating Jan/denial fic (Ultimates? def not 616, anyway); What Tomorrow May Bring is the disintegrator ray/brain reboot one; To Extremes = DO NOT READ. NO, JUST TRUST ME.

Big Bangs, Baby!
Sep. 22nd, 2009 07:53 pm1) Okay, HP fandom is kicking everybody's ass at this game. As it should, considering.

Two multifandom challenges I've seen referred to as "big bangs", but they have no multimedia aspect, so I don't count them as such:

Hey, if anyone's interested in watching me as I sketch out, panic over, and (hopefully) complete a large project, you can watch
sl_fiveoh. I figure it'll be easier if I keep all the in-progress stuff in one place, instead of having to sort through this journal/the detritus of the last half-dozen projects.
Maybe if I start now, I can actually manage to complete an advent calendar this year.

So, That Atlantis Show
Aug. 28th, 2009 09:24 pmI mentioned my Stargate Sort-Of Renaissance before. It caught me by surprise because I've spent the last several months gradually accepting that SGA was just not One of My Fandoms anymore; I've been phasing out icons, I've stopped keeping up with WiPs, I can't even remember the last time I looked at
sga_flashfic. And I forgot something kind of big. I have hundreds of fandoms, a half-dozen Fandoms, and (so far) only three Pivotal fandoms. Inuyasha was my first fandom, Harry Potter was where I began to really identify as a fan, and SGA? Is where I stopped being a lurker. If not for SGA, I wouldn't have an active journal, let alone an active comm. So, you know, thanks, Stargate; to the world, you're a shitty genre show, but you actualfax changed my life.

Aug. 19th, 2009 07:53 pmSo I am in a weird, introverted place right now, fic-wise. Very new=bad, old=good. Which is a little weird to be doing on a new computer, because usually when I get like this, I just stay offline and dive into the approx. five years worth of saved files. It's very soothing, on several levels. But the new computer doesn't have my files, as moving them is going to mean a whole reorganization thing that is very, very overdue and very, very intimidating. So I'm using the Doom Index to find what I want and 1) holy crap, that's a lot of broken links and 2) there are so many things I was sure I recced that I just haven't. Currently blowing my mind? I have apparently never recced that FatF fic with the attempted drawing and quartering (oh, fandom; so many things I never expected to type).
And I'm just looking at things and boggling at some fandoms, because I love those guys, what do you mean I've only recced them three times? And holy crap, I was actively reading in that fandom for five minutes, how are there 30 stories in Mixed Multiples alone? And like, I would never have called Due South one of My Fandoms, it's more a fandom-I-am-adjacent-to, but I've recced it kind of a lot for so little investment.
Anyway. I will be in my little corner, reading Unfinished Business and First Prime and the promise of monsters and What Might Have Been and HP & the Nightmare of Futures Past and other long, shiny stories that I know won't hurt me by randomly inscribing Elvish on Rodney's engagement ring, or including surprise bad time travel, aka, immutable timelines are bullshit, or surprise killing Brendon Urie, omg.
Although I may be back to regale you with my Perfect Royal Pains Fic that I spent an hour fantasizing about at work (femdom, very physical and dirty and with orgasm denial and humiliation and maybe something happens in a public place, like he gets her off and has to go back to the party with the smell of her on his fingers and he just has to hope no one notices and also that he doesn't come in his pants because oh my god, did that really just happen and. Um. Yes. As you can see, it calls to me).

Dear AI Fandom:
Aug. 16th, 2009 12:53 amI kind of want someone to tag your entire fandom with labels, so I could read Column A:
This Is Shipper Fic, Just Go With It
Open Marriages Don't Just Exist in 70s Porn
Divorce Isn't Legal Shorthand For "Die in a Fire"
It's Okay To Break Up With Someone And Maybe Be Single For Five Whole Seconds
You Know What's Fun? AUs!
Sometimes Grownups Solve Things By Talking And Not By Being Cheating Assholes
Everyone Likes Threesomes!
Sometimes You Don't Get to Fuck Every Person You Love And That's Alright
and avoid Column B:
FYI: I Hate Vaginas
Being Alone Means You Are a Miserable Failure; Avoid At All Costs
Let Me Draw You In With Adorable Bromantic Shenanigans And Then Punch You in the Throat With "But Then They Felt Sexual Attraction And Honor Demanded They Never Speak Again" Because This Is Secretly a Victorian Novel
You've Got It Backward, He's Cheating on His True Love With His Wife, OBVS
Somebody Has to Be the Villain And Hey, What Other Word Starts With V?
Grim Realistic Fic Is Grimmer Than Reality, aka, Sucking All the Fun Out of Pining and UST: See, I Told You It Could Be Done.
Then I could read (A) and avoid (B). My fannish experience would be vastly improved.

Jul. 28th, 2009 08:15 pmI decided to go ahead and re-tag
list50 (but not
list50). So I created all the tags I would need and holy god, there's 243 of them. I now have 19 different tags for RPF: bandom, pop, American Idol, CW, Stargate, Star Trek, Gossip Girl, Doctor Who/Torchwood, Make Me a Supermodel, SYTYCD, Top Chef, Jonas brothers, pundits, political, sports, literary, historical, other actor, and other music.
A co-mod would be awesome right now.

Y'all Know the Drill
Jul. 26th, 2009 10:50 pm*points at icon* Yes, that is my favorite quote of the whole thing. I am still a little torn re: a Generation Kill-only list, but not because I can't come up with 50 fics. They would just be 50 fics by like, six people, which I have generally tried to avoid in my lists. After the sixth fic, don't you just go to the author's index anyway? But polls are great for indecision.
Also, Brad Colbert is a stone-cold badass. Middle of an ambush, at night, and he's singing to himself as he kills people. I kind of love him a lot, and possibly want to read about him being a serial killer. I'm not saying he's actualfax psycho like Trombley; I like serial killer fic and that would be a very easy sell, is all.
Nate kind of makes me want to cry. Every time he has to deal with his superior officers, you can just see his ideals dying and it hurts my heart.
This show, guys, this show.
Poll #839 Mmmm, Generation Kill

Give me a title for the list of your choice (even if it's not in the poll! I am weak for a good title and might do it anyway!).

This show, guys, this show.
Because, okay, small fandoms, I love them, but they make me so sad, guys. So much awesome! But so few people who seem to realize it. (Fastlaaaaane, but I have said that before. Two Guys and a Girl! Ryan Reynolds and Nathan Fillion, guys, come on!) If you come late, though, there might be enough fic to make you momentarily forget the sheer waste of it all; it's an awesome trick, until it ends. But!
I rented Generation Kill and I am, predictably, totally in love. Like, in love enough that I am debating over whether I can make a full list or if I should just throw together a prompt list and make up the difference with backlog. Or, hey, rent Band of Brothers and do a whole military docudrama theme. Whatever, I cannot plan rationally right now, there is zombie fic to be had. So I shall leave you with this:
Trombley: I didn't get to shoot no one, Sergeant.
Person: Awh, Trombley. Did your recruiting officer tell you you'd get to shoot people?
Trombley: Fuck yeah he did.
Person: See, Trombley asked about shooting people. I asked about pussy. Guy told me I get to go to Thailand and get all kinds of strange. What'd you ask about, Brad? Brad probably saw that TV commercial, the one with the knight who fucks up the dragon that turns into the Marine. 'Ooh-ooh, dress blues with a sword!' Haha! Fuckin' dress blues commercial, man. That got so many fucking guys. NOW look at us: Trombley hasn't killed anybody, I am a half a world away from good Thai pussy, and Colbert is out here rollin' around fuck-butt Iraq, hunting for dragons in a MOPP suit that smells like four days of piss and ball-sweat. You shoulda rolled into battle with a sword, Brad. That would have fuckin' rocked.

The Internet Is Making Me Sad Right Now
Jul. 21st, 2009 10:12 pmI am totally in an emo have-I-read-everything-good-already? mood. So I'm going to blather at y'all for a while before I sulk off to re-read...something. I want to read Secrets, and HP & the Nightmare of Futures Past, and I Am What I Am, and Defender of the Night, and the Resurrection-verse, but I can already reel off whole sections of those from memory, so. I want something epic and ass-kicking and romantic and if there was non-permanent death, that would be ace, really.
So I am - obviously - not a hardcore shipper or anything (with two exceptions), but sometimes I think that just makes it harder when I dislike a pairing. Because I can look at it and be like, "I'd like to read it, I love that author and that is exactly the kind of ridiculous h/c premise I so love, but I cannot. My brain is willing, but the inner fangirl is in active revolt at the idea."
Sometimes I find a pairing genuinely creepy on its own merits (*cough*Harry/Ginny*cough*), but mostly I seem to hit a problem with the way I approach fandom, which is more difficult, because that is unlikely to change. I have to have someone to root for, apparently, because if it is a fandom for me? I have a favorite. I am there for the favorite, and the favorite only. I am usually ambivalent at best about pairings not involving the favorite, because I want the favorite to have all the boys and girls, basically. It's not a hard and fast rule - I am interested in basically all of the (main) BtVS characters, and I have a hierarchy of favorites in bandom (one for each band, but Brendon Urie trumps everybody) - but it's how I roll 90% of the time.
Like, Gerard is my favorite; my most-read Gerard pairing is with Frank. Therefore, in my head, Frank is with Gerard or Jamia or nobody; I have negative interest in anything else. Gerard can be with anybody, but my inner fangirl has put a little sign on Frank that says "reserved for Gerard and/or Jamia, since I am not quite crazy enough to ignore the awesome RL lady of his choice". The same thing with Pete: Patrick or Ashlee or nobody. Which means I don't get to read much Mikey fic, which is sad and actually what started this; I only got to read half of Discipline and Punish and that is an awesome series and looks really interesting and the Bob/Gerard was great and I totally ship it and I still cannot manage the Mikey/Frank half. Is very sad.
I am a little bitter about the Panic split because I'll read Brendon/Spencer, but what I really shipped (fictionally! I am not a tinhat!) was GSF and somehow, I don't think there'll be much more of that.
Early Hannah Howell novels feel a lot like fanfiction in places. Or internet original fiction, I suppose. There's just a vibe there, like she might secretly have written massive h/c epics under another name. Plus, her awesome hand-waving of things like women wearing underwear and men who think rape is wrong and people not trying to set psychics on fire; it's very "I know and acknowledge this isn't factually correct, but it's how I want to play it, just go with me". Although you know who should be a fangirl but almost certainly isn't? Bertrice Small. She totally loves worldbuilding and using actual historical figures (Jasmine totes has a love affair - with baby! - with actual-doomed Prince Hal) and h/c and slavefic (every other story ends up in a harem in Algiers) and she could really benefit from a good beta.
I totally want slash for RocknRolla; there is an actualfax gay hoodlum in actualfax love with his best friend/gangleader. There is...no, I don't want to spoil it, it was too hilarious. Suffice to say, if it doesn't show up at Yuletide, I will be very sad.
Seriously. Nothing to read. Send recs.

I don't usually talk about fandom controversies (I hate calling them wank when it's an actual debate and not shit-stirring), but re:
arsenicjade's Cello Sonata No. 1 in B Minor "Naissance de Libertè" -
I try to warn for things in my recs as much as I can, vaguely, but with the promise to elaborate if someone sees something they really wish to avoid. But I would not have warned for this story at all. Not because I wanted to surprise somebody, because that's not cool - there are two stories I refuse to warn for, but I say that - but because I didn't even notice the issue. I've seen that scene too many times to think it's unusual. Not in fanfiction, but in mainstream media. I'll warn for it now, with this story, but similar stories? I'm worried that they're just going to blend into the landscape like this one would have.

Again: chronological and mostly unedited, dating from last February to yesterday, if there's a fic I mention that interests, I'll do my best to link you upon request, blah, blah. On to the babble!

Okay! For those of you who weren't here last time, every little while I do a big post of all my random notes and observations. There's fic notes, fannish ponderings, RL stuff, grammar bitching, I think it, it's here. And normally I sort it by subject, but this go 'round, it's all chronological and mostly unedited. It'll date from last February to yesterday. Oh, and if there's a fic I mention that interests you, I'll do my best to hunt up a link upon request.

Aug. 23rd, 2006 09:14 pmfandom is quick, and it's crazy, and above all, it's weird.
this is not the kind of hobby that's easy to explain to non-fans. when someone asks what I did this weekend, I'll say "read", or I'll say "played on the computer", but I won't say "oh, I read fanfiction for about 30 total hours and I can't wait to do it again!". Because then there are the explanations about what fanfiction is, who does it, why I like it, and what it is, exactly, that I read, and pray god my brother isn't in shouting distance because he WILL, every time, answer for me with "gay porn". Sometimes, he'll bring up Harry Potter or boybands and thanks, that's not a conversation I want to have with my grandmother, no matter how awesome she is. And I've never found a quick explanation that doesn't sound patronizing: "fanfiction is fiction written by fans. can you say "fanfiction"?" Next time I'm going with "it's like free amateur tie-in novels" and just hope that works.
and okay, it's crazy. we can one and all admit that this level of obsession with fictional characters and/or celebrities is more than a little odd. we're a nutty little subculture with weird insular lingo and weird social. we write cross-gen slash about a boy and his potions professor, we write amtdi about a colonel and his teammate(s), we write barista AUs about boybanders. it's like a really big, international, intergenerational, decentralised cult of Crazy Shit. we have ideological schisms! name me a single bowling league or bridge club that can say the same.
also, fandom is fast. you can be racing a live source, or racing the website disfunction that follows a spread of fannish disinterest, or you could just be racing a ficathon deadline. but the majority of fandom today is 'net based and everybody knows the 'net speeds you up. it's an everchanging web and there's no gurantee that your site or your server or your favorite author'll still be there tomorrow.

Went back and unlocked (forward-dated) all the rec lists I've finished so far:
Stories from yuletidetreasure.org
Crossovers
Threesomes fics
Stories featuring Xander
Gen stories
(You'd think five rec sets of 50 would equal 250 stories, but you would be wrong. There are seven stories in there twice somewhere, so it's only 243. But still. I feel I should get a prize of some sort.)
Have another twelve (in varying stages of completion) still locked.
These stories...It's hard to explain the way I feel about them.
I've been reading fanfiction for three years. And that's actually not that long; I've read stories that've been in progress longer than that. But when I fall in love with something, I fall hard. Last year, I went to school from 7:45 to 2:55, came home, and usually spent about nine hours on the computer, reading. Weekends, I spent up to 18 hours at a time on the computer. I have read mindboggling amounts of fanfiction. Excellent, execrable, I've read the range. And god, when it's good...half of the beauty of fanfiction is the feeling behind it.
Sometimes you read professional fiction, and just know that this is the author's job. That they wrote this book for a paycheck.
People don't write fanfiction for anything but love. And it amazes me. I am utterly in awe of everyone who does it, because I can't.
The stories I'm recc'ing, I love them. I love them for different reasons, and with varying intensity, but I love them.
Void is gorgeous and fucked up and full of this kind of joyful destruction (self-, and otherwise) that's completely captivating. Context was my first step down the slippery slope into popslash. Retrograde is everything the canon could be. Reconstruction? The best post-Gift story I have ever read. The Key's Watcher makes me read and believe Giles/Jean-Claude. Slave Bear of Care-a-Lot is so absolutely bizarre that it immediately became the best thing ever to me. Esperanza has sparked me to write poetry, it's so gorgeous.
Alpha Centauri, Daemonology, Clex-in-Discworld, Joli Coeur, Chocolatey Goodness, Instructional. Live-In Skin, Trick or Treat, Objects in Motion, Dirigo, Kitty Kitty, Seal Team 13. Physical Presence, A Pretty War, Theory, Coming Up for Air, Superimpose, Dark Horse.
I've spent three years finding these stories, and others like them. I want to share. I want others to love them the way I do, love them so much that you'll return to them again and again.
So go. Read. Enjoy.

Too...Much...Trivia...
Dec. 14th, 2005 10:40 amI have too much trivia in my head. Not the vaguely interesting trivia, such as the dirty, dirty origins of the phrase hunky-dory (two words: Japanese whores).
No, this is trivia for worlds that don't exist.
Few entries ago, I mentioned Bad Crossover Idea #172, Atlantis gets a kestra'chern. I haven't read that series in forever. But I still remember how to spell Mercedes Lackey's over-apostrophized, made-up language. Okay, made-up language family, because there's Kaled'a'in, Shin'a'in, and Tayledras. I even remember the weirdly related words for gay! In Valdemaran, it's shaych, and in Tayledras, it's shay'a'chern, and I always thought there was some kind of link there.
I don't need to know that.
Nor do I need to remember the various X5 designations of the Dark Angel characters, yet I do.
God, that was a cool show. I am a sucker for post-apocalyptic 'verses.
Oh! Fangirl Japanese. And fangirl Mandarin. And fangirl French, and oh, mustn't forget fangirl Latin. And then there are the various created slangs, and the actual British slang, and the military parlance, and the medical terminology, and the acronyms. And then there's actual fangirl-ese, because you know what? "Woobie" and "hoyay" are not, in point of actual fact, English.
But, if you want to read and understand fic in my various fandoms, you have to learn all of these.
I'm pretty sure this is why I can't remember higher-level math. Brains have a finite capacity, right?
